The Kantar Media Academy

In a world obsessed by media, our people are passionate about

creating solutions for our clients to ensure they set the trend. To

keep ahead in the media world, our people need to be at the top

of their game and continually growing. So we take professional

development and sharing knowledge seriously.

Here at Kantar Media, you’re in charge of your career. We’ll

be here to support and encourage you, but you’re in the

driving seat. So take some time with your manager to plan your

development for the year ahead. Be creative. Our programme has

some incredible opportunities (we’re very excited!) but if there’s

something that’s not on the list, we’d love to hear your ideas too.

Taking on addiTional responsibiliTies

Personal Development

Whether it’s taking on a challenging new proj-

ect or assignment, or picking up an area that

you haven’t worked on before, this is without

a doubt the most effective way to develop your

skills.Perhaps there’s an area of work that you

have an interest in, or something you know

you need experience in before you’re ready

to take the next career step. If it’s not part of

your job now, consider how you could build it

in – then speak with your manager.

It’s thought that only 10% of career development comes through formal courses, conferences and training. The rest comes from experience (70%) and exposure (20%). The learning activities described in this section will give you a flavour of the most effective non-classroom based ways to develop your professional abilities.

This means learning how to do some or all of

another person’s job. It could be to cover for

leave or to ensure that more than one person in

the organisation knows about a particular

project or process. Giving another person’s job

a go is also a great way to test whether you

have a longer-term interest in those areas.

reading/desk research

Highly underrated as a learning activity, there

are some incredibly powerful and truly

inspirational resources out there. For some

ideas including books, papers, articles,

webinars, websites and podcasts see the

Kantar Development and Resource Guide.

A powerful tool for raising self-awareness

and helping you select the areas of personal

development to work on. Our 360° tool is based

on the Kantar leadership model and is regularly

used in the business.

If there’s someone who has a particular skill

or set of knowledge that you admire, you could

consider shadowing them. Job shadowing is

essentially spending time observing them doing

their work, watching, listening and learning

what the job is about and what is involved in a

typical day.

secondmenTs

A secondment involves a temporary move to

another department or company for a period

of time, usually from several months to one

or two years. If you’re interested, speak with

your manager then arrange to meet with HR to

follow up.

career conversaTions

This is a discussion between you and your line

manager about your career aspirations. It can

help you to think through what your long-term

goals are and create a plan for achieving them.

You’ll usually get the opportunity to have one

around performance review time.

exposure To broader/higher-level work

Sometimes rather than taking on

additional responsibilities, simply getting

exposure to different work or

environments is helpful. This could be attending

client meetings (if this isn’t part of your

day-to-day role), or shadowing your manager at

more senior managent meetings.

geT a coach

Coaching is another way of developing a

particular skill or set of knowledge. It’s

basically about identifying someone who you

could learn from and asking them to teach/

guide/provide feedback for you in a particular

area.

become a subJecT maTTer experT

If you’re a guru in a particular area and it would

be useful for your colleagues to know more

about it, why not put yourself forward to become

a subject matter expert. This can involve

running briefing sessions, helping to trouble-

shoot quieries or problems, or basically just

being the go-to expert in that subject.

geT a menTor

A mentor is someone, usually more

experienced, who helps and guides your

development in a long-term relationship.

Some mentoring relationships are relatively

informal – people who will be a “sounding

board”, or with whom you can

discuss what’s on your mind. While we don’t

have a structured mentoring programme, if

you’re interested in a more formal

mentoring relationship, please talk it over

with your manager and then with your HR

team.

You can learn from experts and pick up tips and ideas from colleagues in other parts of the Company and get practical advice to help you do your job. This page gives an overview of what’s on offer. There are more details about each course ...

that money? This is where media currency research comes in. This course will shine a light on all the media ‘currencies’, reveal the

methodology used by each and present some of the data collected.

These courses are for all staff, especially if you are studying for the MRS qualification.
