From the perspectives of globalization, safety and management, we are developing the leaders of the next generation, with the power to thrive in global society.
As we enter an age in which the future is increasingly unpredict-able due to factors such as rapid globalization and frequent natural disasters around the world, it is vital to be able to respond to any crisis. There is a need for safety management throughout society, be it workplaces related to medicine, education, welfare, business, or government, and the ability to create and implement solutions to problems.
Against this background, at all schools, Kansai University of International Studies deepen students’ knowledge and education from the perspectives of globalization, safety and management. Furthermore, through diverse on-site experiences in various sites, students are nurtured as people who can manage a safe and secure society.
KUIS offers a wide range of overseas study programs with air fares included (except for students undertaking a Major in Nursing at the Department of Nursing, School of Health Sciences).

Atsushi HAMANAPresident, Kansai University of International StudiesDoctor of Sociology, Sophia University
Dr. Hamana was selected as the 7th best-reviewed university president out of over 700 universities in Japan, in the section of “University Presidents to Watch,” in Daigaku Ranking 2021 (“University Ranking”) published by Asahi Shimbun Publications.
Our educational offering is predicated on three key concepts: globalization, safety and management. These three competencies are particularly relevant in the COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 era. We are all familiar with the steady march of globalization around the world, as well as rising interest in safety and security issues. The third competency, management skill, refers to more than simply being able to manage teams in a work-place or across entire businesses. It is the broader academic competency of defining personal targets and project goals, work-ing to achieve them in a self-directed manner, and successfully articulating those achievements to others. Management skill is something we strive to nurture in all students across all depart-ments. In April 2020, Kansai University of International Studies was merged with Kobe Yamate University to form KUIS, while HAMANA Gakuin Educational Foundation amalgamated with Kobe Yamate Gakuen Educational Corporation to form HAMANA YAMATE Gakuin Educational Foundation. The new CCC mission statement reflects the founding ethos and principles of both institutions. The three Cs stand for Communication, Commitment and Consideration. "Communication" is the art of dialog and the ability to articulate an idea or concept with clarity. Communication is most assuredly the foundation of a functioning society. "Commitment" refers to the idea of being an active participant in and contributor to specific organizations as well as to wider society. "Consideration" encompasses not just perception and deliberation of issues, but also the ability to display kindness and compassion toward others. We are committed to the university's founding principle of “I AI I EN” (以愛為園--create a circle of love). The Japanese character 愛 (love) refers to the idea of human connection, the bond of trust that develops when we show love and kindness toward one another. The Consideration element of the CCC mission statement links directly to the I AI I EN princi-ple. Our goal is to produce well-rounded adults with the capacity for active communication, active consideration and active commit-ment. At KUIS, we measure educational attainment using the KUIS Learning Benchmark. Our aim is to motivate students themselves to develop the six key skills and attributes needed to function effectively in wider society. These comprise three attitudi-nal competencies: autonomous and proactive attitude (autonomy), active contribution to society (social contribution) and ability to understand and accept different cultures and backgrounds (under-standing diversity); two general competencies: problem discovery and solving ability and communication skills; and the use of specialist knowledge and skills in the KUIS Learning Benchmark underpins the CCC mission statement.a particular subject area.
KUIS comprises six schools, seven departments and 19 majors distributed across three campuses at Amagasaki, Miki and now Kobeyamate with course offerings tailored to the unique characteristics of each campus. The Kobeyamate campus, located in a multicultural precinct with a distinctly international feel, offers mainly safety and tourism courses and has a strong liberal arts component. The Amagasaki campus, located in a flourishing business and industry district, is closely linked to the nearby metropolis of Osaka. Amagasaki campus specializes in teacher training, management and marketing and business design courses. The Miki campus is located right next to Miki Disaster Memorial Park, which doubles as the local command center for disaster prevention and emergency response operations, as well as Kita-harima Medical Center, a state-of-the-art facility serving the local community. Accordingly, the Miki campus has a strong focus on health- and sport-related courses. KUIS offers an extensive range of experiential learning programs in areas such as international studies and community studies, with a strong focus on teamwork and group projects. We welcome new students who are willing to take on new challenges; and who wish to take an active role in their education and direct their own individual growth and learning journeys, rather than passively absorbing lectures. KUIS encourages such students to be "active persons" embodying the 3Cs.
HAMANA YAMATE Gakuin Educational Foundation has released a new mission statement based on the three Cs of Communication, Commitment and Consideration. The CCC mission statement underpins the distinctive educational experience offered at Kansai University of International Studies, with three uniquely different campuses at Kobeyamate, Amagasaki and Miki, with a strong focus on student-directed learning in line with the KUIS Learning Benchmark.
Active learning for active people
Equip young people with the tools to survive and flourish in an age of uncertainty, in accordance with the CCC mission statement
Restructured academic organization harnesses unique educational opportunities at the three campuses
Message from the President
The six skills and attributes tie in directly with the CCC educational mission statement: the "Communication" element denotes communication skills; "Commitment" refers to autonomy and social contribution; while "Consideration" encompasses under-standing diversity, problem-solving skills and specialist knowledge and skills. In this way, personal development in line with the KUIS Learning Benchmark underpins the CCC mission statement.

The KUIS Learning Benchmark is the yardstick for measuring student progress and achievement in these areas. Students are provided with regular opportunities to reflect upon the positive impact of their university studies on their own personal growth and development journey. Having the students confirm if they have met their study goals themselves encourages self-evaluation skills. This handy tool helps students manage their study-life balance, teaching an essential skill for the world of work.

In recent years, Japan and countries all around the world have faced frequent earthquakes and other natural disasters, leading to a great demand for safety and security skills on a global scale. In 2014, we reached out to 13 universities in Southeast Asia and launched the Asian Cooperative Program (ACP) (which has 14 member universities as of April 2020). Together with the other member universities of the ACP Consortium, we are striving to enrich various programs and develop human resources capable of managing Asia’ s development, led by the concepts of safety and security.
