District Heating and Cooling in Kansai International Airport
KANSAI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Heating & Cooling Supply Co., Ltd.
■District Heating and Cooling System in Kansai International Airport
In supplying heat to facilities on the airport island extending more than 4km from north to south, plants have been set up in three districts with a high concentration of demand-Central, South, and North-with the aim of reducing construction costs and heat loss from pipes, while chillers have been distributed throughout the island. The Central Plant supplies heat to the management and passenger districts, which make up more than 85% of heat demand on the island. Electric centrifugal chillers, ice thermal storage systems, steam absorption chillers, and fire-tube boilers have been set up, and the facility configuration allows for a variety of operations to meet the needs of the situation on hand. The North and South Plants supply heat to their respective surroundings. The South Plant supplies heat to the international cargo, development, and supplies processing (fuel, wastewater and waste treatment) districts, while the North Plant focuses on the supply of heat to the domestic cargo district. The heat source for the north and south districts comes in the form of steam, provided through pipes leading from boilers located in the Central Plant. The steam powers the steam absorption chillers in each plant to provide chilled water, and at the same time, serves as steam for heating purposes.
