KANANGRA CLASSIC BIG WEEKEND 2012 We had such a great time hosting the Kanangra Classic in 2011, and encouraged by the amount of support for the Inaugural event - we set about planning the 2012 event. With the help and support of our Major Sponsor Bikeminded - we have turned the Kanangra Classic into a BIG Weekend - another great event in another great place.... The lineup this year includes some Mountain Biking on both the Saturday and Sunday as well as the introduction of an Ultramarathon Run (50km) on the Saturday and the opportunity to combine a run on the Saturday with a ride on the Sunday for a split day Duathlon.... In addition there will be some activities for kids, plenty of camping and good food - so in short - there is heaps on... Aside from all of the extra events, Mountains Sports will have a super big marquee up on the weekend. there will be a variety of things happening inside including a Live Band - The Repeat Offenders, as well as full catering and a great place to sit and chatter with friends no matter what the weather brings... The Kanangra Boyd National Park is one of the most pristine parks in the Greater Blue Mountains and we strongly recommend the short drive to Kanangra Walls to experience all that this part of the world has to offer. KANANGRA CLASSIC COURSE MAP...

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Event Course has a huge amount of double trail, it is well marked and with plenty of aid on the course, and makes for a fast and fun ride or run with several opportunities to get wet.

The course starts at the Jensens Farm on Kanangra Walls Road. It heads north along Kanangra Walls Rd, then turns left onto Budthingeroo Fire Trail.

Participants then head south along the Mumbedeh Fire Trail which includes several creek cross-ings and lots of double trail for a smooth run into the steady climb from Budthingaroo Creek to the Mt Emperor Fire Trail junction. The climb is gradual and the biggest climb you will face all day.

Participants progress and turn Right onto the Mt Emperor Fire Trail and enjoy some more down-hill and a picturesque creek crossing before coming up to the Ben Lomond Fire Trail which is an isolated and infrequently visited area of the park.

After crossing Box Creek participants proceed south along the Kowmung River and the Morong Creek Fire Trails, before starting the “inner loop” with a left turn onto the Boyd River Fire Trail and back towards Kanangra Walls Road. A quick left and left again puts riders back onto the Kowmung River Fire Trail and proceed south along the Morong Creek Fire Trail, completing the inner loop and crossing Morong Creek, the biggest water crossing on the course.

The Morong Creek Fire trail climbs back up toward the Kanangra Walls Road and from there you will surely hear the excitement at race hub as you make your way across the finish line…

Riders doing the 100km will do two laps of this course.

This park is part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

Vast gorges, high lookouts and wild and scenic rivers lend Kanagra-Boyd’s wilderness a rugged and dramatic grandeur. Thurat Spires, Kanangra Walls and Mount Cloudmaker provide sandstone scenery on a majestic scale.

It is well worth a drive to the Kanangra Walls lookouts.

Discover Oberon for yourself....Fast factsOberon was proclaimed a village in 1863 and is a popular area for trout fishing, mountain biking, bushwalking, and fossicking for sapphires. Oberon is located just 180 km west of Sydney and has a population of 2,700.

Why go thereThe Kanangra Classic of course!! At 1,113m, Oberon is the highest town in the Blue Mountains region. It is the perfect hub from which to explore a multitude of unique attractions, National Parks and towns & villages, including Jenolan Caves and Kanangra Boyd National Park. With four distinct, idyllic seasons and the most beautiful scenery in rural NSW, a visit to the area is a great “close to Sydney” holiday for the entire family.

HistoryThe traditional owners of the land were the Wiradjuri people. The town was first known as Bullock Flats, but when it was proclaimed a village, it became Oberon.

Things to doOberon is a perfect base for visits to Jenolan Caves, Kanangra Boyd National Park, Blue Mountains National Park and Abercrombie River National Park. There’s a busy program of events in the town throughout the year and Oberon has a number of restaurants, cafes and takeaways catering to visitors. Lake Oberon is noted for its stock of brown trout for fishing.

The area is immensely popular for the exotic mushrooms, “Truffles” found in the State Forests, with the picking season running from late January to early May.

EventsThere are a multitude of shows and events on throughout the year ranging from The Kanangra Classic through to Arts Exhibitions, the Daffodil festival and historic Railway Museum Tours.

The Oberon Visitor Information Centre is the hub for all that is happening in the area.

Sustainable Mountain Bike

Code of Conduct.

• Know where you are going—some areas of the Blue Mountains have special restrictions on bicycle use.

• Keep to the track and don’t speed.• If trail is wet, choose another trail or

day to ride—wet tracks offer less soil shear resistance and are more readily eroded. If when riding you come across a muddy section, go through it, not around it.

• Ride only on open trails, don’t make new trails.

• Carry your bike across soft streambeds if an engineered crossing is not available.

• Travel in small groups to minimise impact on other trail users and wildlife.

• Don’t ride around trail obstructions, help keep the trail narrow

• Don’t ride over trail-side vegetation.• Don’t skid or brake slide, apply brakes

evenly, both on front and back—to reduce the chance of soil shear strength being exceeded and subsequent erosion gullies forming.

• Ride over drainage bars, not around them.

• Slow down when encountering other trail users—to reduce the risk of collision; improves safety all round.

• Don’t shortcut across hair pin bends—hair pin bends occur in tracks where steep, straight descents would pose erosion potential.

• Carry a first aid kit for yourself and your bike!
