2012 KendAll HoCKey ClASSiC preview
Entering its 22nd edition in 2012, the Kendall Hockey Classic has become
one of the best-established collegiate tour-naments in nation. And with that maturation, this year’s field marks the first time in tournament his-tory that all three visiting teams are making repeat trips to Anchorage. Canisius College returns to the Kendall after going 0-1-1 in the 2004 event, while Air Force returns for the fourth time overall and the second time in three years, following trips in 1999, 2003 and 2010. For the fifth straight season, UAA’s northern neighbors from Alaska Fairbanks are also back, looking to add to their titles from 2008 and 2009. Of course, the Seawolves are always hungry to recapture the title of their sig-nature event, which they won in thrilling fashion last year with a 4-3, overtime vic-tory over St. Cloud State in the weekend’s finale. Here’s a quick look at all four challeng-ers for the 2012 championship gold pan:
AIR FORCEComing off an impressive 2011-12 cam-paign that saw them earn an NCAA Tournament berth, the Falcons are again one of the favorites in Atlantic Hockey, returning 22 letterwinners from a squad that went 21-11-7. Senior co-captain John Kruse is one of two returning double-digit goal scorers for the Academy, registering 16 goals and 30 points last year. Fellow senior forward Kyle De Laurell scored 15 goals and tallied 23 assists last season, while sophomore forward Cole Gunner lived up to his name as a rookie with eight goals and 20 helpers. Frank Serratore, in his 16th year at the Falcons’ helm, should have a solid netminder as well, with junior Jason Torf sporting a 1.73 goals-against average and .929 saves percentage in 19 contests a sea-son ago.
ALASKA ANCHORAGEThe host and defending champion Seawolves are hungry to add a seventh title in 2012 as they embark on the final season of the ‘old-look’ Western Collegiate Hockey Association. Eighth-year head coach Dave Shyiak returns 16 players from last season, includ-ing the dependable goaltending combo of juniors Rob Gunderson and Chris Kamal. Kamal, who backstopped the Seawolves to the 2011 WCHA Final Five as a rookie, registered a 3.46 GAA and an .877 saves
percentage last year. Junior forward Matt Bailey is UAA’s leading returning scorer with 10-7—17 totals, and will be joined by six seniors as the veterans anchors of the team. Senior defenseman Scott Warner was productive on the offensive end with 2-13—15 num-bers and senior forward Jordan Kwas is a dangerous offensive threat, racking up 14 points last year despite playing in just 21 games.
ALASKA FAIRBANKSEmbarking on their final season in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, the Nanooks will feature a trio of capable for-wards in 2012-13, all of whom scored at least 25 points a season ago. Junior forward Cody Kunyk scored 15 goals last season and tallied more points than any other player in this year’s Kendall field with 32. Senior right wing Andy Taranto registered 12 goals and 14 assists for UAF’s 12-20-4 team in 2011-12, while junior left win Andy Beck had 13-12—25 totals. Sixth-year head coach Dallas Ferguson’s biggest challenge will be replacing depend-able goalie Scott Greenham – the 2009 Kendall Most Outstanding Player – who started 33 games last year.
CANISIUSLed by 8th-year head coach Dave Smith, the Golden Griffins are hoping to capture their first Kendall title as they make the trek all the way from Buffalo, N.Y. Junior defenseman Ben Danford will anchor CC’s blue line after registering 12 assists for last year’s 10-22-4 club, while playing in all 36 games. On the offensive end, junior forwards Kyle Gibbons and Taylor Law tallied identical 11-15—26 scoring numbers a year ago, and are among 21 returning letterwinners. Junior Tony Capobianco is the Golden Griffins’ most experienced netminder, com-ing off a solid stats line of 2.81 goals against and .911 saves percentage.
Alaska Anchorage forward Jordan Kwas collected a goal and two assists in the Classic a year ago.
Alaska Fairbanks forward Colton Beck was named to the Classic’s all-tournament team in 2011.

North Dakota goalie Jon Casey earned the very first Classic Most Outstanding Player Award after leading the Fighting Sioux to the inaugural tournament title over UAA in 1984. Casey would go on to have a successful NHL career, including helping lead the Minnesota North Stars to the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals.
UAA’s Paul Krake is the only player in the history of the Kendall Hockey Classic to earn multiple Most Outstanding Player Awards, claiming the honors in 1988 and 1990. The Seawolves won the Classic title in both of those seasons.
UAA’s Mike Scott (1999-02) earned Most Outstanding Player honors in 2001, marking the first time in tournament history the MOP was awarded to a player on a non- championship team.
Former Colorado College standout Peter Sejna was named the Most
Outstanding Player of the 2002 Classic after leading the Tigers to
the tournament title. Sejna went on to claim the Hobey Baker Memorial
Award that same season.
Started as an eight-team tournament in January 1984, the Kendall Hockey Classic has grown into one of the premier preseason college
hockey tournaments in the nation. Initially known as the First Interstate Classic, the tourney’s format would switch to the current four-team field in 1986. The Classic was discontinued in 1993 when the Seawolves joined the WCHA, but was reborn in 1999 when the WCHA reduced its league sched-ule to 28 games. From 1986-92 and 1999-2000, the tournament was known as the Nissan/Jeep or Johnson Nissan Classic. The tourney was named the Nye Frontier Classic from 2001-07. Kendall began its title sponsorship in 2008. Host Alaska Anchorage has won the Classic six times, claiming its most recent title in 2011 after posting three titles in four years from 2003-06. The Seawolves also posted tournament championships in 1990 and 1988. Seawolf players have hoisted the Classic’s Most Outstanding Player trophy on seven occasions (Mickey Spencer, 2011; Josh Lunden, 2007; Shea Hamilton, 2004; Dallas Steward, 2003; Mike Scott, 2001 and Seawolf Hall-of-Famer Paul Krake,1988 and 1990). UAA has an overall record of 21-14-9 in 21 Classic tournaments and has played for the championship 10 times.

The 2000-01 Classic field featured two teams that went on to the Frozen Four (Michigan and Michigan State). On two occasions the defending NCAA Champion participated in the Classic (Northern Michigan, 1991-92; Boston College, 2001-02).

Dr. Steve Cobb Director of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage
In 12 seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprecedented heights. Not only have
the Seawolves excelled in the field of competition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways.Starting with the 2007-08 campaign, UAA has enjoyed five of the most memorable athletic seasons in school history, highlighted by four Elite Eight appearances for Seawolf basketball
teams and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country (six times), skiing (five times), and men’s & women’s track & field (four times). In fact, with UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. In the 2011-12 athletic campaign, the Seawolves placed a program-record 16th in NCAA Div. II standings in the Learfield Directors’ Cup, which measures nearly 300 D-II programs nationwide on overall athletic success. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, construction has also begun on UAA’s planned $109 million Seawolf and Community Arena on campus. He has also overseen major upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of a new gym floor and bleachers at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in 2010. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Hockey Classic and SpringHill Suites Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions dis-plays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90).A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State.
