Our greatest glory is not in never falling, But in rising every time we fall.

Well the boats are in the water and summer is starting. It has been great to get out and see my neighbors. The men’s golf league has begun and after the first two weeks, my team is in first place. This is mostly be-cause the opposing teams have not shown up, but I’ll take it however I can get it. During the last board meeting I mentioned that I needed to write another president’s report and did not have much material, so they gave me some ideas to write about since they know the first thing everyone reads when they get the View is the president’s report. The first item is regarding the Lake Sherwood Association Aquatic Weed Control Manager. The current Man-ager is looking to step down after a number of years of exemplary service. If anyone has interest in taking on this responsibility, please contact me. It is a very important position within the Association, as aquatic weed control is about 50% of the Association budget. The major responsibility of the position is to work with the weed control applicator on the best way to manage the available budget and make sure the weeds do not im-pact the enjoyment of the lake. Another item is that the beginning of summer always brings graduations and the celebration of those gradua-tions. During this time, the lake is great place to enjoy these celebrations. Just remember that your guests will need to drive home and please help them celebrate responsibly. While they are celebrating, please monitor their actions on the lake to make sure they are safe. As the summer really kicks off, the graduates and their friends will be out enjoying the lake with time off from school. Please keep track of what they are doing and remind them to be courteous of everyone on the lake and those that live on the lake. I hope they have the best summer ever, but remember that during the workweek, many of us need to get some sleep so we can get up and go to work the next day. Please remind them that they need to reduce the noise level as the sun goes down. If they can’t seem to do that, I will be happy to drop by their house at 5:30 AM the next morning when I leave for work to see how they are doing. With regards to safety, please remember to watch your young children and grand children around the lake. Kids are not always careful around the water and even if they are good swimmers, they could hit their heads and be knocked unconscious. Don’t take your eyes off them at all if they are outside. If you are unsure if they might go near the water and you don’t think you can watch them every second, put them in a lifejacket. When my daughter was two, we put her in a swimsuit that had floatation built in. She never complained and we never worried about what might happen. Another safety item is to keep glass off of the islands. Please use the islands for picnicking or camping out, but for your safety and for others that might use the islands after you, do not bring glass on the islands. Also, any-thing you bring on the islands should be carried off. Leave the island just as it was when you got there. I am already looking forward to my favorite holiday on the lake, Fourth of July. It should be fun to have a long weekend and to once again have the fireworks on the Fourth. I look forward to seeing you on the lake and have a great summer. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you have regarding the Lake Sherwood Associa-tion. I can be reached by email at [email protected] and by phone at 248-684-2074. Remember that you can also contact any Board member, including your area representative with any questions or concerns.

Goose Round Up

At the May 27th LSA Board Meeting the board voted to cancel Goose Round Up for 2009 and pursue the Goose Nest Destruction Program starting in 2010. LSA was represented at the Department of Natural Resources Goose Nest Destruction Program training class on April 9, 2009. The DNR provided literature and a slide presentation about nest destruction. It is the DNR's preferred program and they encouraged our association to switch to it as soon as possible.

• It is less costly for the state and the individual as-sociations to operate

• It is more effective in controlling the goose popu-lation short and long term

• It is endorsed by the US Humane Society The nest destruction program is held earlier in the year. It is not con-fined to one specific day like Goose Round Up. Usually it is about the third week in April through the first week in May. We will Provide more in formation in the following issues of the view.

Lake

Sherwood Landcare Spring is struggling along and has delayed some of our usual projects, but the Landcare Committee is very busy. I appreciate the infor-mation about trees and other problem areas. Please continue to keep me informed if there are areas not receiving the attention they deserve. Some of the areas receiving attention recently are: Trees: the trees along Surfwood, Raftwood, and Pikewood, received a trimming this Spring. Cleanup: many areas are getting routine cleanup, pruning, seed, fence repair, beach raking, etc. Buoys: the buoys will be in the water by Memorial Day. Please remember that there is no anchoring to a buoy. They are naviga-tion and safety markers only. The anchors are rough cement and have sharp hardware and are not safe for boaters or swimmers. Last year two buoys were severely damaged and had to be replaced. They are not for skiing or swimming around as they are filled with cement and will cause harm to boats and people. They cost money and a lot of time to replace. For everyone’s safety Please treat our private property with the respect you would your own property. All canals and areas behind the islands along the north end of Driftwood are NO WAKE areas. The area on the south side of the Commerce Bridge, as you exit the tunnel is also NO WAKE. There is no speeding through the tunnel. Let’s have a safe summer. Entrances: the entrances will have fresh flowers and flags for Memorial Day. Lawn cutting: the grass is being cut by Brien’s Lawn Service. If there is an area that is not being cut, please let me know. Lawn Spraying: Weed spraying is being done by Tru Green Lawn Service. Please let me know if there is an area being missed. I added quite a few to the program this year. Remember we do not treat within 10’ of any shoreline, so some areas never get treated. Shorelines: we will continue to leave a 4’ greenbelt along all shorelines, when possible. Islands: the islands will be cut starting May 20. Please remember to take all garbage off the island with you. The fire pits are for burn-ing wood only. If you want to build a bonfire you must bring your own wood. Please keep the picnic tables at least 8’ from the fire. The grills are for any residents’ use, but please leave it clean for the next person. Please remember to fill out a reservation form if you want to camp on the islands. If you camp, you must bring your own port-a-potty or plan on driving home. Projects scheduled for sometime this Summer or Fall: Commerce Shoreline Renovation Project: the shoreline of Commerce Road(on the south side of the road) will receive a break wall this year. Permits and plans are underway. The project itself will only take a few days. We are hoping to do the work when the water level drops.

Dam Inspection: the inside of the dam will receive an inspection as soon as the water level drops. The outside will have an inspection this Fall. Trees: the island trees and any shoreline areas will be trimmed, from the water, in the next few weeks. Kendall Park: the tennis net is in place. The swings are being repaired. Entrance signs: the sign committee has done a great job of discussing and choosing some possible sign designs. We have narrowed the project down to three possibilities and are now focusing on the site design. We are talking to masonry experts and getting bids on stone work. If you know of anyone in this business, we would like to hire from within the subdivision. A huge debt of gratitude is due Greg Woelfel, of Fast Signs, for his time and manufacture of sample signs for the committee. Please notice the signs at the Starwood entrance. They are a sample of the size and design we are heading towards. Thank you to Glenn Short for getting us the updated Com-merce Township sign regulations. I appreciate all the support we received at the General Membership meeting. If anyone is interested in the old redwood signs please contact me as soon as possible. I look forward to seeing friends and neighbors out on the water again. Summer is when Lake Sherwood really shines and why we all enjoy our lake community. Let’s continue to work together to keep Lake Sherwood safe and beautiful. Sandy Weber Landcare Committee Chairperson

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, But in rising every time we fall.

David Browne, Oak Valley’s eight grade science teacher contacted Lake Sherwood to get permission for his classes to test our lake. He emailed: “In order to get all of our 8th graders to the site it would take 3 days. I have been given substitutes to cover classes for 4/20, 4/21, and 4/24. We were hoping to use the beach located on Driftwood from 9-11 and 12:15-2:15 on those days.” Linda Tucker sent Mr. Brown an overview of the testing that is done annually on Lake Sherwood (temperature, dissolved oxygen, phosphorus and nitrate nitrogen, Chlorophyll A, and water clarity). In return, he emailed back the class findings: Linda, We found Lake Sherwood to be in the good-excellent range for bacteria, phosphates, nitrates, and turbidity. The dissolved oxygen rating was only rated as fair. Our students hypothesize however, that this is most likely due to the low temperature of the water at the time of the testing. We were also very surprised at the amounts of macro invertebrates that we found. We found a number of different species as well indicating that the lake is functioning at more then a safe level for wild life. Thank you so much for letting us perform this experiment at your lake. Our students got so much out of it. It really let us make some real world applications in class. Dave Browne Oak Valley Middle School

Students Wade Into Water Testing (partial article) By Bob Gross, Special to The Oakland Press, 5-3-09 About 200 eight-graders from Oak Valley Middle School in Commerce Township are testing Lake Sherwood to determine its health. Lake Sherwood is an impoundment on the Huron River in Commerce Township. The data being collected by the pupils is “kept for finding out how the Huron River watershed is doing. It can be found out over time whether or not the houses on this lake, if all their fertilizers and other pollutants, are getting in there and if it’s affecting our water, because this is where we get our drinking water, the Huron watershed. They collected aquatic macroinvertebrates, insects and other small creatures that live in the lake. They also are monitoring the water for chemicals such as nitrates and phosphates and are doing an inventory of the physical characteristics of Lake Sherwood. “This is the first year we’ve done it”, said David Browne, eight-grade earth sciences teacher at Oak Valley. The water testing is part of the Global Rivers Environmental Education Network, which has been funded in the past by General Motors. “We’re trying to teach them how you can tell if a lake is healthy or not and if water quality is good,” Browne said, “a lot of them live near water”. Shanna Gitre, 14, said the presence of aquatic insects can indicate the quality of the water in the lake. We found some really small bugs that kind of looked weird. They were like a little seed basically; I never would have noticed that unless we pulled it out with the waders.”

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, But in rising every time we fall.

I hope by the time you read this message that all of you have either put your boat in the water or are preparing to do so. It seems that most of the violations and tickets involve Personal Watercraft. So, in preparation for a safe boating season, you should know the following rules in regard to personal watercraft: Who May Operate a Personal Watercraft (PWC) No one under the age of 12 years may operate a PWC legally. Those 12 and 13 years of age may operate a PWC legally only if: He or she obtained a boating safety certificate prior to January 1, 1999, or all of the following conditions are satisfied: The operator is accompanied solely by his or her parent or legal guardian, and both the operator and the parent or legal guardian have obtained a boating safety certificate, and the PWC is equipped with a lanyard-type igni-tion safety switch, and the parent or legal guardian has the lanyard attached to his or her person, clothing, or PFD. Those 14 years of age or older: A person born after December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally only if he or she has obtained a boating safety certificate. Those born on December 31, 1978, or earlier may operate a PWC legally without restrictions. Those in your family who are thinking about going out on the water in a PWC this year should be thinking about enrolling in a boating safety class, where they will get a certificate after completion. This year, if you are over 16 years of age, you also have the option of taking an online safety class. A list of classes as well as in-formation on the on-line class can be obtained from the DNR website at www.michigan.gov/dnr There are classes coming up at City of Wixom (248-624-2850), at Huron Valley Community (248-676-8390), and at Aggressive Marine (248-360-7225).

Recording Report Cheryl Miller June 2009 Secretary

The following are the minutes of the Lake Sherwood Association General Membership Meeting on April 22, 2009. These minutes are subject to the approval of the membership. President Mike Doyle called the meeting to order at 7:35 pm and reviewed the agenda. Approximately 32 resi-dents were present which constitutes a quorum. However, because no action items were scheduled, a quorum was not required. Officers Reports President – Mike had nothing to report outside the agenda items. Vice President – Kathy Sawicki also had no new business to discuss. Recording Secretary - Cheryl Miller referenced the draft minutes of the October 23, 2008 General Member-ship meeting which were printed in the November 2008 issue of The View. No changes were suggested so the minutes were adopted by acclamation. Treasurer - Paul MacDonald indicated that the majority of the operating expenses are not incurred until mid to late year so there was nothing to report on the 2009 budget at this time. However, he added that not as many dues have been paid at this point in time as in prior years. He commented that this is not entirely unexpected given the economic environment. Committee Reports Social: Gloria Hughes reported on the fun LSA children and grandchildren had with the Easter Bunny the previous weekend. Other upcoming events include the annual perennial exchange on May 24th, the garage sale on June 4-6, the boat parade of lights on July 3rd, and fireworks on July 4th (rain date July 5th). Please consult The View for further details. To recognize the hard work of many LSA volunteers, a random drawing was held and Dennis Nicol (A-lot captain) and Paul MacDonald (treasurer) were given Milford House gift cards. Bob Hughes on Trentwood (Winewood A-lot captain) also received a gift card. Gloria reminded everyone to sup-port the local businesses that donate to LSA and who advertise in The View. Lakes Committees:

Linda Tucker reported that the annual weed survey would be completed by mid-May. Two aquatic weed applications are planned with the first being done after Memorial Day if possible. If done too early, Linda indicated that a third late summer treatment would be needed. The intent is to have the lake in great condition for the July 4th holiday.

Regarding the water level, the boards were replaced approximately April 10th. With the heavy spring rains, the water level is being monitored.

Fishing from the bridge by non-residents continues to be a problem and damage to surrounding plants has occurred. Oakland County Sheriff Lt. Clay Jansson has been contacted and has confirmed that the area being used is in fact LSA property. Road easements are controlled but are not owned by the Oak-land County Road Commission and therefore LSA is correct to call the sheriff to remove trespassers from our greenbelt properties.

Linda clarified that the recent Detroit Free Press article concerning fanwort infestation was not about our lake but rather it Upper Lake Sherwood.

April 25th is No Haz Day at Walled Lake Northern High School and residents are encouraged to drop off batteries, oil-based paint, TVs, computer components, etc.

The boat ramp is open and Phyllis is again hard at work for us! A concern was raised about missing caps on island docks. Sandy Weber will replace them again but en-

couraged boaters to be careful to avoid boat damage.

A-Lots & Docks: Linda Gepper reported that 11 open slips are currently available. Safety: Mike reminded everyone to look at the map of the lake in The View to understand directions, ski areas, etc. Buoys will be in place to by mid-May when the LSA pontoon is launched. Paul Geck will confirm the status of marine sheriff patrols given the budget cuts. Random weekend patrols and on-call availability can be expected at a minimum. Land Care:

Sandy Weber reported that the annual inspection of the dam would be done in a few weeks when the wa-ter level dropped a bit.

Because the paperwork took longer than expected, the Commerce Road project has not started yet. Per the DEQ, boulders need to be extended to protect the shoreline. Since the Road Commission of Oak-land County won’t help with the right away at the road, Sandy plans to have large deep-rooted bushes planted to stabilize the land and hopefully deter trespassing fishermen.

On behalf of the entrance sign committee, Sandy reminded everyone of the feedback residents have pro-vided over the past few years on their dues survey indicating interest in new signs. Greg and Linda Woelfel from FAST SIGNS provided photos of four prototypes ranging from laser cut limestone slabs to sign foam made of recycled plastic to anodized aluminum. Costs are still pending however it was stressed that new signs would not paid for with a special assessment. Rather, if approved by the gen-eral membership in October, the costs would be built into the 2010 budget just like all improvement projects. A couple of prototypes can been seen at the corner of Starwood and Commerce. A total of seven signs will be needed – one at each entrance and a new one at Driftwood/Sleeth. While the com-mittee finalizes the designs and prices, Andy Sarkisian offered to work with the Township to confirm their approval.

Old Business: Andy Sarkisian provided an update on the road SAD (special assessment district) that would repave the south-east portion of the subdivision. Although not a LSA project, he reviewed the multi-step process. Step one is complete with the “interest” surveys collected. Because of the early snowfall, field measurements could not be completed until this spring with estimates of costs expected to all affected homeowners by early July. After that, final letters will be sent to get legal signatures of deed holders. Due to the very challenging economic conditions, Andy indicated that it was difficult to know how much continued support there would be even though homeowners can pay a lump sum or over time. New Business:

The Road Commission is installing a traffic light at Sleeth and Wixom, not the “round about” as previ-ously suggested.

Jerry Ammons will confirm if he needs additional signatures for the annual goose roundup. Scheduled for the third week of June, Jerry reported that future goose round ups are questionable since it is in-creasingly difficult to find states that will accept the birds. There was discussion concerning the pros and cons of egg shaking and/or nest destruction including the difficulty of finding the nests. It was suggested that “nest mapping” be conducted and such a request will appear in a future issue of news-letter. Regardless of the control method, Jerry needs to collect signature from 70% of waterfront resi-dents.

Resident Vic Bolterstein offered to manage a “Linked In” site for Lake Sherwood residents who are look-ing for jobs. This professional networking “facebook” type site would not be on the LSA website. Vic reminded everyone that 75% of jobs are attained via an inside contact. While not a LSA project, it will serve as a great way for neighbors to help neighbors in these tough times.

Linda Gepper proposed and Paul MacDonald seconded a motion to adjourn the meeting at 9:15. pm. Mo-tion carried. Mike thanked everyone for attending. Respectfully submitted, Cheryl Miller Recording Secretary

May 11th lake survey completed by Aquaweed’s owner Dick Pinagle Main Lake: I have surveyed the lake and all canals and yes there most certainly are weeds. In fact, in some places the weeds (mainly curlyleaf pondweed) are at or very near the lake surface. These areas

are almost the entire western lake shoreline and north west bay where the park and boat docks are located (Area 3 and 2). Weeds are at the surface just north of Linda's house (Area 10). Milfoil and curlyleaf are just below the surface growing in a large patch near the small islands located at the mid and southern section of the lake (Area 3). The one section of the lake that does not currently have a lot of weeds is the southern end of the eastern shoreline.

Canals: Several of the north canals have weeds near the surface (Area 1). Weeds are near the surface in Area 5 (mainly the park area and nearby small finger canals). Weeds are near the surface in the round bay off Winewood Ln. Weeds are about 10" below the surface in "Jungle Island" bay. Weeds are at the surface in patches along the southern shore of the main canal in Area 6. Algae is also an issue along the shore in many places in the canals.

The question becomes ....when should we plan the treatment? From a budget stand point, the later the treatment the better. Treating late May assures minimal weed grow-back before the July 4th Holiday. The lake usually requires two weed treatments a summer so the idea is to avoid having to do three (either partial or full).

Last year we treated May 20th and that seemed to work out OK although some weeds were coming back at the July 4th holiday period. The treatment plan is the same as last year. Use Reward to drop the milfoil and curlyleaf in most of the canal areas and the main lake (some of the canals do not need treatment at this time and can wait until after the holiday). We will use copper sulfate along the shore to kill the surface algae. Costs similar to last year. First treatment was May 18, 2009. Whole lake Reward and Copper Sulfate.

Use a light aluminum 30” lake rake, pile on dock or grass to dry, put in yard waste container.

To remove filament algae

use a skimmer net.

If weeds are heavy, use a pitchfork to lift bunches of weeds.

A rake cutter is also helpful in getting rid of plants growing on the bottomland.

Residents are encouraged to rake their shoreline.

One sure sign of spring is the emerging POT HOLES in the street. If your street has pot holes, call the Oakland County Road Commission to get them repaired at:

(248) 858-4804

Also, there is a email complaint form on their website

www.rcocweb.org. If the hole is small and you don’t want it growing larger — there is also a do it yourself solution. Buy a bag of asphalt repair at the hardware store to fill the hole. That will do the trick and keep the small hole from becoming a big problem.

Thanks for being a good neighbor.

While spending time at one of our favorite hobbies….cooking, I thought it would be a great idea to include a recipe or two in the View. Better yet, why not make it more of a contest as to favorite recipes from around the lake. So here is the plan. Recipes would be broken into two categories. The recipes will be published in the View just before the appropriate season. 1. Winter (Christmas, Chanukah, Thanksgiving, etc) Main Course, Finger Foods,

Sweets, Deserts, The Ubiquitous One-dish Casseroles. 2. Summer Outside cooking (it always smells so good around Lake Sherwood during

the 4th of July), Main Course, Finger Foods, Sweets, Deserts, The Ubiquitous one-dish Casseroles.

Don’t be shy about sending things in. This could be the best things since sliced bread. So let the ideas flow and we can spread the wealth of knowledge around LSA

Children’s Easter Egg Party Update: Although the weather was cooler than expected and no glimpse of the sun appeared, the annual Lake Sherwood Children’s Easter Egg Hunt was packed with eager egg hunters. The highlight of the event was the arrival of the Easter Bunny in a sporty white convertible, compliments of the Jacobs family on Ravinewood Court. The raw Easter Egg toss was became frustrating to participants as the raw eggs would not break. The long process ended with the win-ners Bianca Zaguroli of Ravinewood Ct. and Sara Nelson of Ravinewood . The girls each received a large chocolate bunny for their prize. Also taking home a large chocolate bunny for their winning of the raw egg race was Carol Cochrane, niece of Kristin Born of Ledgewood. Owen Bailey, grandson of Virgil and Julie Schave of Tiquewood, guessed the closest for the jellybean count and was awarded a stuffed bunny rabbit. A sincere thanks to realtor and neighbor Randy Wilcox of Keller Williams Realty-Wilcox Group for generously sponsoring this annual event. Also a special thanks to Linda Tucker who volunteered to take individual photos of the eager children sitting beside the Easter Bunny and thanks to Nalani Hewitt for scattering the eggs throughout the park. A big cheer is extended to Mary Jacobs for toughing it out in the “costume”. Thanks Mary, we couldn’t have done it without you! Perennial Exchange Update: A spectacular sunny afternoon complimented the enthusiastic gardening group of Lake Sherwood residents exchanging plants and con-versing in Kendall Park. It was a perfect day for sipping Mojitos, munching on mini desserts and sandwiches, and gathering transplant suggestions, discussing plant problems and solving garden mysteries. Winning the perennial basket ($65 value) donated by Bogie Lake Greenhouse was Kathy Kleckner of Ledgewood. Immediately following the exchange, Kathy was also lucky enough to have master gardener Linda Becker of Driftwood stop at her yard and problem solve by providing a few tips. A special thanks to realtor and neighbor Susan McFarland of Century 21 Town & Country for again sponsoring this event. Visit the LSA website for photos of the perennial exchange. Night of Lights Boat Parade: Be a participant and enjoy the view. This light show of illumination is a spectacular event! The Night of Lights Boat Parade features a parade of boats adorned with illumination. Boaters have opted to use multicolored, clear and roped lights, as well as glow in the dark bands. This event will take place just after dusk (approximately 9:45pm) on Friday, July 3. Boaters will meet in the large bay off Wine-wood and Tamwood and travel throughout the main lake. Boaters are reminded to use an inverter of 400 watts of power to avoid losing power midstream. Also those traveling under the Commerce Bridge or Ledgewood need to have access to lower any illuminated poles to pass within the bridge’s height restriction. Fourth of July Fireworks: Once again, Zambelli Internationale of New Castle, Pennsylavania will provide the much anticipated firework display on Saturday, July 4. The 20 minute display will begin promptly at 9:55 pm from Higgins Island. Residents are not allowed picnicking on the island for the entire day on July 4 as the pyrotechnicians set up their equipment and the permit prohibits anyone on the property throughout the day. Also, due to federal regulations, boaters are required to stay within 1,000 feet from Higgins Island throughout the entire display. Failure to comply will result in an interruption of the firework display. * Residents on the main lake living on Commerce, Surfwood and Driftwood streets are encouraged to water down their boat and hoist covers to avoid potential sparks that could cause damage. Adult Island Party: Where else can you go to enjoy a night of dancing, mingling and craving your hunger under the stars? Join your neighbors and friends for the annual Lake Sherwood Island Party from 9 pm to 1 am, Saturday, August 1st on Higgins Island. The popular live band Mr. Moody, featuring Dr. Dan and Penny Shanahan, will perform. Invite your friends and family to enjoy a night of dancing under the stars. Cost is $5 per person. Don’t forget to bring some cash for the 50-50 drawing, as well as chargrilled burgers served hot off the grill. This is a BYOB event. Don’t forget to bring along extra bumpers for tie up, coolers, chairs and bug spray. Volunteers are needed for set-up and clean-up. Please call Dave Katzman at 684-0138 to volunteer.

Entrance Signs

Logo modifications will include the Lake Sherwood letters being enlarged to enhance readability from the road and the graphic “s loop” in the word Sherwood being reduced. The flag may be on a shorter staff. We received the township’s new sign ordinance (thank you Glenn Short) and are allowed 32 square feet for the sign not including the structure it is supported by. There are at least three designs being considered and all will be available for viewing at the fall GMM. The cost which is projected between $25K-$35K will be contained within the beautification budget.

At the spring GMM, large photos of various entrance sign possibilities (thanks to Greg & Sue Woelfel) were available for resident viewing and feedback. A 34-page Powerpoint presentation was not presented due to the school’s projector equipment problem, but we thank Linda Tucker for her time and effort in creating it. Below are three sketches (by Sandy Weber) that the committee is working with to get bids and develop the final three designs. The goal is to project a water image by incorporating a lake, waterfall, or riverbed design with the use of rocks and grasses.

Lake Fast-Traffic Direction We continue to see residents using outdated locations for starting points for pulling up a skier/wakeboarder. The four starting points are: South of Higgins Island South of Castaway Island East of U-turn/Remo Island North of Skier’s Island This does not mean that if your skier/wakeboarder falls, that you have to go back to one of the starting points, this only means that if you are changing skiers, please drop off near one of the starting points so that the next skier can start at a starting location. All too often, we see skiers sitting in their boats, blocking the traffic lane for others. This is especially true at the north end where the lake narrows. At one time, the north end was a good starting point, but not any more; start up skiers cannot see well down the lake for northbound lake traffic coming into the north end. And we encourage boat traffic in this north lake area to reduce weeds and algae. Also, the north end has the best smooth water for ski because of the shoreline being all beach and no seawalls.

Another violation seen often is no “spot person” in the boat with the driver. Always have a 3rd person in the boat or on a PWC when towing.

Be safe. Enjoy the lake.

TREATMENT NOTICE RESIDENTS IN THIS AREA ARE PLANNING TO HAVE THE WATERS IN THIS AREA TREATED WITH HERBICIDES AND

ALGAECIDES FOR CONTROL OF AQUATIC WEEDS AND/OR ALGAE. This notice is being circulated as required by Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) rules. A permit for the treatment has either been secured or will be secured from the MDEQ before the work is begun. In some cases a permit is not required. You are receiving this notice if you are in the proposed treatment area, or if you are within 100 feet of the proposed treatment area. In some cases, we also provide this notice to persons in adjacent subdivisions as an informational courtesy to advise persons who may have beach rights but are not lakefront residents. We usually work with groups of homeowners or their elected representatives through homeowners associations, or with the owners of apartment or condominium units. Please try to contact any of these in your situation if you have any questions about the proposed treatment plan.

Aqua-Weed Control, Inc. does two types of treatments: algae control and weed control. Algae Control - If we are doing only an algae control treatment using only copper based products then no water use restrictions apply. We will post the shoreline with 14 x 11 inch yellow signs informing you of this work as required by the MDEQ.

Lakes – Typically lake shorelines are treated twice during the summer. Ponds - Expect several algae control treatments during the summer beginning in late April thru Septem-

ber. Weed Control / Water Dye - If we are treating for weeds or using blue dye, then there are restrictions on the use of the water, and we will post the shoreline with 14 x 11 inch yellow signs before these products are applied to the water body as required by the MDEQ. We treat each water body according to a schedule or seasonal plan worked out between the persons in charge and an aquatic manager. A typical plan will include multiple treatments from May thru August and possibly September. However, due to the differences in season plans and the uncertainty of weather please watch your shoreline for the posting of the 14 x 11 inch yellow signs throughout the summer. Typical lake weed control treatment patterns:

If your lake is to be treated with Fluridone then you can expect treatment in late April or early May and then again in mid May.

If your lake is to be treated for weeds using other herbicides then you can expect two treatments a summer. The first being in late May or early to mid June. The second application typically is done in mid too late July or early August depending on weed growth patterns. In a few cases a third touch-up weed application may be required.

Ponds are typically treated for weeds twice each summer. IN MOST CASES YOUR WATER BODY WILL BE TREATED MORE THAN ONCE EACH SEASON; CHECK THIS WITH YOUR ASSOCIATION. The posted signs will indicate the date of the treatment, the product name, the active ingredient and any restric-tions as to the use of the water for swimming, watering lawns and the consumption of fish taken from these waters. We use NEW SIGNS for each treatment. Only products which have been registered for use in the aquatic environment by the Michigan Department of Agri-culture and the US Environmental Protection Agency are used. We anticipate using one or more of the products listed. Please be aware of the restrictions on each product. If the MDEQ changes any restrictions they will be noted on the signs we post.

Lake Sherwood Island Use Permit Form To Lake Sherwood Island Goers: The Association implemented a policy for residents wishing to utilize the islands for late night use. This policy asks all resi-dents who wish to use any of the islands between the hours of 11 PM and 8AM to acquire a permit prior to doing so. The ability to reserve an island will allow families or other groups sole usage during the specified time. Please contact Gloria Hughes at (248) 685-0631 if you have questions or to submit your Permit Form. This application is a requirement for any persons occupying any of the islands after 11:00 PM and before 8:00 AM. This ap-plies for weekday and weekend activity. This application is good for one use only. Should a person wish to use the island again, another application must be completed. Failure to obtain a permit will result in a $100.00 fee. If this fee is not paid within 30 days, the applicant's residence would be tagged with a lien as done with unpaid association dues.

NO PARKING AT BOAT RAMP

Each year we have residents violate our boat ramp rules regarding parking. There is no parking at any time at the boat ramp, day, night or lunchtime. If you are not in your vehicle, you are parked and that is not allowed. The boat ramp (the entire area including the gate and adjoining fence) is for launching and retrieving watercraft, including off-hours and when the administrator may be at lunch. Please regard this space as if someone other than yourself parks in your driveway without your permission. Therefore, if you don’t have prior permission from the Boat Ramp Manager, then consider it off-limits. Thank you. Boat Ramp Manager
