Pre-Conference Summits

NEW in 2018! Women in Technology Leadership Pre-Conference Summit

It’s time to lead!On Monday, June 4, join University Business and a roster of accomplished higher education technology leaders as we seek to understand the career obstacles many women face in higher ed technology, and as we work together with our engaged audience to support, motivate, educate and inspire the next wave of influential higher ed technology change agents.

Our 4.5-hour program kicks off with a networking breakfast followed by inspiring keynotes, collaborative roundtable discussions and a lively leaders panel.

All UBTech-registered attendees are eligible to attend this event. (Yes, male attendees are welcome too!) Remember to check the box for the Women in Technology Leadership Summit when you register for UBTech.

The glass ceiling for women in higher education technology management is well-documented, with women holding just 22% of CIO positions in 2017, a decrease from 28% in 2016.

Not long after becoming Director of Educational Technology at Baldwin Wallace University in Ohio, Donna Gutschmidt attended UBTech 2017 in Orlando, Florida. She spoke with University Business about her experience.

What were your objectives in attending UBTech?Being new in my position, I wanted to meet people, network with colleagues and learn about the tools other schools were using, whether it was their LMS, media storage, video, lecture capture or any other instructional technologies. I wanted to know what they were using and why they chose it over something else.

How were your objectives met?The event was smaller than other conferences I’ve attended, but it was the right size for me. The Exhibit Hall wasn’t overwhelming, so I was able to cover the majority of it and speak with a lot of people.

The variety of session topics was absolutely outstanding. The speakers were extremely knowledgeable and engaging. Most were colleagues who shared their knowledge and experiences, and everyone, whether speakers or participants, was very willing to share their best practices.

What was your favorite part of your UBTech experience? One of my absolute favorite parts was the preconference workshop on the first day. I really liked the four-hour concentrated focus on one topic [learning spaces]. I came back with so many ideas.

I also loved the collaborative nature of the entire event. The first time you attend a conference can be very intimidating, but from the time I arrived, everyone was friendly and welcoming. They treated me like a celebrity.

Collaboration, not competition, at the heart of UBTechReal-life experiences, best practices shared at annual conference
