The Outreach Ministry Team would like to thank everyone who
came by on Sunday, May 17 and Sunday, May 31 to donate food and
monetary donations for our local food pantries. Now more than
ever, people in our community are in need of food to feed their
families during this pandemic and your response is helping fulfill
this great need.
We will continue the Drive-In Food Drive ministry monthly. We
will host the drive the 2nd Sunday of each month beginning June
14, 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Remember to place your
food donations in bags or boxes in the trunk of
your car, drive around to the back of the church,
pop your trunk and volunteers will receive your
donations. Place checks or cash in envelopes
and we will receive those from your trunks as
well.
We welcome all church members who would like to volunteer
with the drive on the second Sunday of each month. Contact Mary
Ellen Bass, Peggie Shultz, or Pastor George if you would like to
volunteer. We are following the maximum number of 10 persons
and we are following safe distancing, wearing masks and gloves,
and using hand sanitizer for the safety of everyone. Thank you to
all the volunteers including our youth that helped in May. You are
doing God's work!
Strengthening children and families so that all may know God better.

Pastor’s Message

having amazing success at “open-air
preaching,” mass outside gatherings in
the countryside and the streets of Lon-
don.
The Holy Spirit was teaching these
early Methodists to “speak in other lan-
guages,” and fortunately Wesley was
attuned to the Holy Spirit enough to
learn. In spite of his own initial distaste
and mistrust of any worship outside the
church walls, Wesley followed White-
field’s lead and was soon preaching be-
fore thousands of poor farmers, coal
miners, and factory workers in the fields
and streets, sharing the Good News of
Jesus Christ with people who had never
set foot in a church.
I am wondering now if the Holy Spirit
isn’t trying to teach us to speak in a new
language.
Our Church Council has appointed a
“Building Reopening Task Force” to
study the NC Conference’s “Model for
Renewing Face-to-Face Community and
Worship.” It’s an extensive list of guide-
lines for making our building as safe as
possible, including gloves and masks,
regular disinfecting of the sanctuary,
social-distancing, and eliminating phys-
ical contact. The take-away is that there
is really no way to make our sanctuary
completely safe. At best, we can only
reduce risk.
Could the Holy Spirit be calling us out
of the church building, just as it did those
early Methodists? Could the Holy Spirit
be poised to teach us a “new language”
(Continued on page 3)
“When the day of Pentecost had come,
they were all together in one place. And
suddenly from heaven there came a
sound like the rush of a violent wind, and
it filled the entire house where they were
sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, ap-
peared among them, and a tongue rested
on each of them. All of them were filled
with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
other languages, as the Spirit gave them
ability” (Acts 2: 1-5).
Sunday, May 31, was Pentecost Sun-
day, the day we celebrate God’s sending
the Holy Spirit, empowering disciples of
Jesus Christ to “speak in other lan-
guages” and carry the Good News to the
ends of the earth.
I’ve been rereading an excellent book
of Methodist history called Wesley and
the People Called Methodists by Richard
P. Heitzenrater. I was reminded of a part
of our history that we tend to forget or
gloss over, John Wesley’s epic failed at-
tempt to establish Methodism in the colo-
ny of Georgia in 1736. Wesley tried to use
the model that had been so effective in
London, high Anglican Church worship,
with smaller group meetings during the
week. But this model just didn’t appeal to
rugged colonists who were more inter-
ested in surviving in the wilderness than
going to church and Bible studies. Wesley
had not yet learned their “language,” and
he returned to England thinking he had
failed miserably as a missionary.
When he got home, he discovered that
George Whitefield, who he had left in
charge of the Methodist movement, was
