JUNE 2019 NEWSLETTER

FROM YOUR SENIOR MINISTER…

What were you doing Sunday, May 19 at 8 p.m.? I am going to make a

pretty safe bet that most of you (my readers) were not amongst the gazil-

lions of people who tuned in for the finale of the HBO Series, “Game of

Thrones” (GOT). I am a novice when it comes to GOT. I missed all but the

last season of 8 total seasons (I think)…depicting a make believe time of

long ago when kings, queens, castles, and dragons were the norm. It was

a fun, fantastical ride.

The final few episodes came down to who among the 7 nations would sit

on the Iron Throne? Several individuals were in the running (some wanting

the throne, others not). Going into the final show, the hands-down leader

was Queen Daenerys (she had a pet dragon…a destructive and unstop-

pable dragon). While Daenerys had demonstrated flashes of brilliance and

compassion through her early reign, her vision for a “New World” going for-

ward was full of death and destruction. Thanks for reading this far, here is

GLOBAL LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

Again this year, FCC will be 1 of 500+ host sites for the

Global Leadership Summit (GLS). All day Thursday and

Friday, August 9-10, we will welcome people from all

over East Texas for an amazing two days of inspiration,

training, and learning. This year’s faculty includes

among others: Bear Grylls (“Man vs. Wild”), Aja Brown

(30 year old Mayor of Compton, California), Patrick

Lencioni (author of “The 5 Dysfunctions of a Team”),

and many more.

Registration is under way. For all who are affiliated with

FCC ($44 for first time attendees; $89 for repeat atten-

dees). Contact Tricia Anderson PHONE AND EMAIL

HERE in the church office to get these prices through

June 25 (online registrations and registrations for peo-

ple outside our church family are priced differently).

Our goal is to offer 2 days of world-class leadership

training to our community. This training counts toward

“Continuing Education Units” (11.25 credits) for the

many professions that require CEUs. Last year’s event

was incredible (in great part because of all you who

helped make it happen!!). We have a leadership team

in place already working to get the word out.

I believe so strongly in the GLS because of the many

opportunities accompanying our affiliation with it.

Through the GLS, we can offer great ministry to the

people of our church and our surrounding community,

we can reach out into our community (businesses and

churches) and to our world as the GLS is broadcast to

675 additional sites in 125 countries in 59 languages.

GLS is enlarging my heart, mind, and faith…and is

enlarging the ministry of FCC.

I would love to see you here for this year’s GLS. Break

out of your usual schedule…for 2 days that promise to

stir new thoughts and ideas…challenge our faith…

awaken our heart for the world around us.

Chris Pulliam

Sr. Minister

For the 2nd year, FCC offers a series of open-invite eve-

nings around town and invites any who are interested

to c’mon out! Enjoy some informal fellowship with

your church family, in some public spaces we’ve re-

served or will stake out. Only our movie night requires

payment to attend; each location will have snacks or

food and beverages available for you to purchase.

We offer these events throughout the summer, be-

cause schedules are often looser this time of year,

sunlight lingers for easier driving, and families with chil-

dren at home often have the ability to come out or

stay out later on week nights.

Our biggest hope for each social is inter-generational

interaction! Each night is open to “church friends” of

all ages – whether we know each other well or not.

We’ll come together to enjoy a bit of nature, conver-

sation, a new activity, or spiritually stimulating enter-

tainment — and hopefully deepen some connections

and build church family along the way.

Learning from last year, we’re skipping live music

nights and weekends (which proved crowded at

popular venues, and harder for conversations), and

we’re sprinkling in a few new locations. We ask for

RSVPS to the church office, the week of each event,

to prepare local businesses for our numbers. (The

movie night needs firm RSVPs by the Friday before,

and will cost $10 each for a bank of pre-purchased

tickets.)

Here's the slate of events – grab it as a handout begin-

ning Sun., June 2.

MONDAY, JUNE 17

CHILDREN’S NEWS

We are going to keep adding things to

our calendar to do, especially since we

have to re-schedule some of our events,

but the first big thing we are going to do

together is go and see Secret Life of Pets

2. This is a family event, so parents if you are available you are wel-

come to come. We will be seeing the movie at Studio Movie Grill at

10:45am on Friday June 7th. We will meet at the movie theatre at

10:30am, so we can get tickets and seats. If you know you and your

family want to come please let me know ahead of time so we can all

get seats together. Also if your child needs a ride, please let us know

early so we can coordinate and carpool to and from the theatre.

YOUTH NEWS

We had an amazing Youth Sunday. I know there were some hiccups

here and there, mostly due to sound and audio issues in the sanctu-

ary, but the kids did a great job leading us in worship. I am so proud

of each one of them. On behalf of the youth, I would like to thank

you to the whole congregation for your support. Thank you for your

kind words that you shared with the youth after the service, and

thank you to everyone who participated in our youth fundraiser. I

know the audio in the sanctuary was weird on Youth Sunday, so I

would like to share with you what Miles Brandt said about our youth

fundraiser. Every year our youth asks the congregation to participate

in the envelope challenge to help us go on our yearly mission trips.

We take envelopes, mark them 1-100, and place them in Disciples

hall on Sundays and on the secretary’s desk during the week. Then

people pick up those envelopes and match with money (cash,

check, or charge) with the amount written on the envelope. Many of

you have already picked up an envelope and enclosed more

money than was required. Thank you for your generosity. There are

still several envelopes left and we will continue the envelope chal-

lenge in the following weeks so that we can reach our mission trip

funds goal.

Another thing happened on Youth Sunday. After the service the

youth had their Summer Kick off on Lake Tyler.

Twenty-four youth and their parents showed up to

the lake party for food, fun, and games. We had

an amazing time. Thank you to Greg and Cynthia

Nance for letting us use your wonderful prop-

erty! Thank you to all the adults who showed up

and helped cook food, wrangle kids, and all

those who helped covering the kids in paint, and

ice cream toppings (you’ll have to ask the youth

about some of the fun games we played while

we were out there). It was truly a wonderful day.

On June 4th the Youth will be going to Six Flags in

Arlington. Please RSVP ASAP if you plan on going

on this event. For future youth events check

out http://www.fcctyler.org/youth-ministries.html

Our preschool-

ers have

graduated!

We’ll miss

them, but are

proud and

excited to see them moving on to new

learning ventures.

Our summer schedule has begun. We

will be open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays,

and Thursdays through Aug 8. We will

be closed the week of Aug 12-16 for

cleaning and reorganizing our rooms.

See you back here for our Fall schedule

Aug 19.

DAY OF CARING...Continued from page 1

I am asking you to be a part…to put our spiritual

muscles to work by exercising our faith in a physical

way. Some of you may need to leave before

lunch—that’s fine. Don’t miss out on an opportunity

to be the hands and feet of our Lord, Jesus.

So, make room in your schedule for this important

day in our community as hundreds of people gather

together “for good.”

Hope to see you there!

Chris Pulliam

FROM YOUR SENIOR...Continued from page 1

Queen Daenerys vision of grace, peace, love, and

compassion was to wipe out all her enemies so that

“her people” could have peace in their “New

World.” Those around her counseled her to pull back

the attack, but she would not.

Remember the Palm Sunday story—Jesus’ triumphal

entry into Jerusalem? What the people wanted was

a king…a warrior king who would fight back against

the Romans and reclaim their rightful place as the

people of God. But Jesus had a much different idea.

His strategy was one of love and self-sacrifice in the

hopes of setting in motion a “new world” (the

“Kingdom of God/Heaven”). It worked.

Had Jesus come in waving a sword, I doubt we

would be telling his story still today. He understood

the way forward to be the way of peace and love.

“Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave

him the name that is above every name, so that at

the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in

heaven and on earth and under the earth, and

every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9-11).

Your Friend and Pastor,

Chris Pulliam

We have a steady 100+

views for our online

sermons. That means

100 more people each

week our ministry is

touching. You can boost

our viewership by liking, sharing, following, and

subscribing to us on Facebook and YouTube.

Thanks for helping spread the word!

2019 HARVEST…

Each year, FCC chooses to take a distribution from the

income on our endowment funds. In April, the FCC Board

and Congregation approved a “Harvest” (as we call it) of

$73,000. Our next step as a congregation is to identify

ministry/campus needs that fall outside the usual budg-

eted items. So, dream big, think deeply…what would be

a great next move for us at FCC? Talk to (or email) the

Ministry Team leader or staff person most related to your

idea.

No deadline for requests has been set as of this printing.

Send your requests to the church office email

([email protected]). Our Finance Committee will

meet to consider the best stewardship of these monies.

Their Harvest proposal will be brought before the Board

and Congregation for final consideration.

DWM GENERAL MEETING, JUNE 12

All FCC ladies are invited to our General Meeting,

Wednesday, June 12, at 11:30am in Disciples Hall. Food

will be provided by the DWM officers and Leaders.

Jennifer Flanders will be presenting, “Lessons I’ve Learned

from My Children.” You can read her fun, inspirational,

and educational articles in the Tyler Paper on Thursdays.

She is the mother of 12 children and is now experiencing

the added joy of being a grandmother.

We must have a count, so pleas RSVP with the church

office. Deadline is June 7.

“STEPPING OUT WITH SOUL

SISTERS”, AUGUST 17

All women, tweens to twilights, are in-

vited to DWM’s, “Stepping Out with Soul

Sisters” event. We will spend a half-day,

9am-1pm, in the Contemporary Worship

Center being led by Rev. Bennie Brad-

dick, former FCC Tyler Associate Minister and current Sen-

ior Minister of Twin Pines Christian Church, Lexington, KY.

If you were a member of our church when Bennie was

here, you will remember her fondly and can attest to her

gift of ministry. If you don’t yet know Bennie, you are in for

a rare treat as she shares her perspective on women’s

spiritual growth and development.

This event is free for all FCC, Tyler ladies, but space is lim-

ited so please register in the Church Office by August 2.

After that date, attendance will be opened to the public

for $15 per participant.

Complimentary childcare will be provided but please let

the office know the number of children and the age(s).

DID YOU KNOW…

FCC has a Memorial Committee that encourages and directs memo-

rial gifts (monetary) given to FCC. Providing Memorial gifts is a beautiful

way to recognize and remember someone who loved our church.

When a death in your family occurs, please consider naming our

church in the obituary as a suggestion for memorials to be given in

memory of your loved one. You may designate the area of ministry you

prefer—Campus Renovation, Outreach, or Worship & Fine Arts would

be beneficial, or you may designate your memorial monies to be used

by the church leadership in the area needed most.

Thank you in advance for the ministry that will be made possible by the

Memorial ministry of FCC.
