QUICK HITS

• Florida State enters the 11th week of the 2019 season ranked No. 4 by the NFCA and USA Softball, while Softball America has the Seminoles placed fifth. The Noles have been ranked in 97 consecutive polls by USA Softball, and in the top 15 of the NFCA poll for 92 straight weeks. FSU started the season with five straight No. 1 rankings by the NFCA and has been the top-ranked team by the NFCA 14 times in program history, tied with Tennessee & Arizona State for 7th-most in the history of the poll.

• The Noles have been ranked No. 1 in the first five releases of the 2019 NCAA Softball RPI.• The Seminoles rank fourth in the country in on-base percentage (.436) and home runs (69),

and are fifth in scoring (7.40 runs per game) and slugging percentage (.603). The 69 home runs for Florida State already ranks third-most in a single season in program history, seven away from the record of 76 (2018).

• The Seminoles are getting production from up and down the lineup as six different players already have 32+ RBI on the season, led by Dani Morgan, who has 45 RBI. It is just the fourth season in FSU history to have six or more players have 30+ RBI - 2016 (6), 2017 (7) and 2018 (7).

• Florida leads the all-time series with Florida State, 25-17, but the Noles have won three of the last four games in the matchup - a 3-1 win in 11 innings on May 3, 2017 and a 4-1 victory on April 11, 2018, both in Tallahassee, along with a 2-0 win in Gainesville on April 3, 2019. The Seminoles are 8-12 against the Gators at JoAnne Graf Field.

SMILEY FACES FOR HAYDENThroughout the season, you may notice that the FSU players will have a smiley face on their neck, drawn with a marker.

The smiley faces started on March 17 when Hayden Stone, an 11-year old girl that FSU Softball adopted through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation earlier this season, came to our game against Notre Dame after recently having a procedure on her neck.

She didn’t like how she had a fairly large scar on her neck, and Meghan King mentioned to her how some baseball players, after having Tommy John surgery, have turned those scars into smiley faces with a variety of tattoos to turn a negative into a positive. Hayden happened to have a marker in her backpack that day and Meghan offered to draw a smiley face on Hayden’s neck. Hayden asked if Meghan would want a smiley face, and she eagerly accepted.

Meghan went on to throw a no-hitter against the Irish and was on ESPN’s Sportcenter on March 18 and shared the story of Hayden with the nation.

Now, the Seminole players will have smiley faces drawn on their necks to show support for Hayden and to reduce the stigma of her scar.

QUICK STARTThe Seminoles have done a great job of getting off to a good start so far in 2019, as Florida State has scored in the first inning in 30 of its 45 games this season. Of the 91 first-inning runs this season, 29 came on February 22-24 during the Unconquered Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Seminoles had only scored 56 runs in the first inning in their 70 games of the 2018 season.

VERSUS NCAA’S BESTThe Seminoles put together the No. 1-ranked non-conference strength of schedule in 2018 and have again built a strong schedule for 2019 as Florida State will face 15 of the Top 50 Watch List members from USA Softball, as well as 11 of the top 25 preseason players from ESPN.

Up to this point of the season, the Noles have faced 12 different hitters from this list and they have combined to go 20-for-56 (.357) from the plate with six doubles, four home runs, 12 RBI and nine strikeouts.

Of the pitchers on the list, FSU has faced OU’s Giselle Juarez, Arizona’s Taylor McQuillin and Florida’s Kelly Barnhill who have combined to go 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA, giving up nine runs on 12 hits, including three home runs and 12 walks over 17.0 innings.

Overall, Florida State has posted a record of 9-1 against the teams and players on this list, with a lone loss at No. 12 Arizona on March 9.

The Seminoles will face Florida’s trio of Kelly Barnhill, Amanda Lorenz and Kendyl Lindaman again on April 17 in Tallahassee.

FSU VS. FLORIDAFlorida leads the all-time series with Florida State, 25-17, but the Noles have won three of the last four games in the matchup - a 3-1 win in 11 innings on May 3, 2017 and a 4-1 victory on April 11, 2018, both in Tallahassee, along with a 2-0 win in Gainesville on April 3, 2019.

DYNAMIC DANIJunior Dani Morgan is having the best season of her career, as the outfielder ranks second on the team with a .405 batting average (51-for-126), holds an .746 slugging percentage and has nine doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 45 RBI and 24 runs scored through 45 games of the 2019 season.

The 10 home runs surpasses the five HR she had in her freshman and sophomore seasons combined.

Morgan came into the season as a career .282 hitter with a .426 slugging percentage and 16 doubles, six triples, five home runs, 52 RBI and 65 runs scored through 121 games in her career.

ONE INNING VS. SEVEN FOR OPPOf Florida State’s 333 runs scored this season, 91 have come in the first inning. That first-inning total alone is nearly matching the competition as the Seminole pitching staff and defense have only allowed opponents to score a total of 107 runs on the entire season.

In truth, the Noles could have stopped after the first inning in 16 of their 45 games this season, as their first inning output outscored the opponent for the rest of the game.

FSU/ACC RECORD WATCHSeniors Cali Harrod and Carsyn Gordon, along with redshirt senior Meghan King and sophomore Sydney Sherrill, have been putting together impressive careers in the Garnet and Gold and are moving their way up the FSU, as well as ACC, career record books.

Harrod ranks fourth in walks (140), is fifth in school history in stolen bases (113) and her 30 home runs are sixth-most, while being tied for sixth in runs scored (192). The 140 walks are also seventh in ACC history.

Gordon ranks third at FSU with 141 walks, fourth in RBI (164), fifth in home runs (32), and eighth with 183 runs scored. The 141 walks are also sixth in ACC history.

King currently ranks third in FSU history with 98 wins in the circle, and her 159 appearances are fourth-most in program history. King also holds the FSU saves record with 10.

Despite just playing in her second season of collegiate softball, Sherrill is already seventh in FSU history with 40 doubles.

CAN’T HOLD THE NOLES DOWNFlorida State has been outstanding this year at the plate, as the Seminoles rank in the top 10 of the NCAA in seven different categories, including ranking fourth in home runs (69) and on-base percentage (.436), and fifth in scoring (7.40 runs per game) and slugging percentage (.603).

The Noles have reliably been able to get runners on base and move them around the diamond.

Only three times in 2019 have the Seminoles been retired in 10 or more consecutive plate appearances. The longest streak of consecutive FSU batters retired came on April 15 as UNC sent down 12 Seminole batters in a row.

The Noles were also held without a baserunner for 10 straight batters on April 6 against Louisville and February 8 against UNCW.

CALI HARROD LEADS OFFSenior shortstop Cali Harrod has batted in the leadoff spot for the Seminoles in all 45 games this year and has done an outstanding job of getting the game going for FSU.

In her 45 first-inning plate appearances, she has a batting average of .481 (13-for-26) with a triple, two home runs and 17 walks. Overall, Harrod has reached base to start the FSU first inning in 30 of 45 games this season for a .667 on-base percentage, and has scored 22 of her 54 runs in 2019 in the first inning.

SIX WITH 32+ RBIFlorida State’s success throughout 2019 has been a complete team effort, as opponents can not just focus on a handful of players that can do damage and produce runs. Through 38 games, Florida State has six different players that have 32+ RBI, and 12 with 6+ RBI, led by Dani Morgan who has driven in 45 RBI.

That is tied for the third most 30+ RBI players in a single season in FSU history, matching the team performance from 2016 and trailing the seven from the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

MORE 1ST-INNING RUNS THAN 17 OTHER TEAMSFlorida State first-inning performance of 91 runs scored are more runs than 17 other NCAA Division I teams have recorded in the entire 2019 season so far.

CONSISTENT SCORINGNot only have the Seminoles done well with scoring in bunches, as FSU ranks fifth in the country with a 7.40 runs per game average so far in 2019, but the Noles have also been consistently putting runs on the board as Florida State posted a streak of scoring in 67 straight games, from April 13, 2018 to April 6, 2019.

The 67 games is a school record, surpassing the 49-game span from the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

THREE NO-NOS IN FOUR GAMESThe Florida State pitching staff and defense was executing in all phases as the Seminoles recorded three no-hitters in four games, including consecutive no-hitters against Notre Dame (March 17) and Florida A&M (March 19), along with another versus NC State (March 22).

Meghan King pitched a complete game against the Irish, retiring 21 of the 22 batters she faced, as an FSU error in the seventh inning kept her from a perfect game.

Against the Rattlers, Makinzy Herzog tossed the first 5.0 innings and posted a career-high six strikeouts and only one walk, before Kara Bilodeau entered to pitch the final inning, retiring all three batters she faced.

It marked the first time that the Noles had posted back-to-back no-hitters since 2010, when Sarah Hamilton blanked Hofstra and Kent State on February 27 and 28.

King again tossed a no-hitter on March 22 against NC State, allowing just two base runners on a pair of walks and posted 11 strikeouts over 5.0 innings against the Wolfpack.

EXPLOSIVE POWERFlorida State ranks fourth in the nation with 69 home runs, fifth in slugging (.603) and sixth with a .436 on-base percentage.

That power comes from all over the lineup as 11 different players have at least two home runs, 12 different players have at least two doubles and the Seminoles have already hit 154 extra-base hits through the first 45 games of the season.

NOLES IN THE POLLSACC CONTROLThe Seminoles have been the elite team in the Atlantic Coast Conference for several years. Since the conference added softball in 1992, FSU has won 16 of the 27 ACC Championships, including a shared title with Maryland in 1997.

The Noles have earned the regular season conference title in each of the last six seasons and earned ACC Championships in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. FSU holds the top five win totals in the regular season versus conference opponents, tallying 24 ACC victories in 2014 and 2017, 21 in both 2016 and 2018, as well as 20 wins in 2015.

Between a series at Maryland on May 5-6, 2012 and at Louisville on April 6-8, 2019, Florida State posted an unbeaten streak in 52 consecutive ACC series, holding a 48-0-4 mark against conference opponents, including 38 sweeps. Over that span, FSU posted a 1-1 series split versus Virginia Tech (2014), at Notre Dame (2014), at Louisville (2015) and at Notre Dame (2016). The Seminoles are 138-18 in their last 153 ACC regular season games (.885%).

SIX IN A ROW!Florida State has been the ACC regular season champion for each of the last six seasons after finishing with the best conference winning percentage from 2013 to 2018.

It was the only time that any school in the ACC has won six straight regular season titles, passing FSU’s four-year streaks from 1992-95 and again from 2001-04.

No other school in the conference has won the regular season title four times in a row and Georgia Tech is the only other ACC school to secure three consecutive conference championships, as the Jackets earned regular season titles in 2009-11.

GRAND SLAM GORDON Senior Carsyn Gordon put the game against Notre Dame on March 15 out of reach as she slugged a grand slam as part of an eight-run second inning as the Noles defeated the Irish 11-1 in five innings.

It was the fifth grand slam of her career, adding to her bases-loaded HRs against Florida A&M (Feb 24, 2016), UAB (Feb 28, 2016), CSUN (March 6, 2016) and NC State (May 4, 2018).

The five career grand slams is a school record and is tied for 11th in NCAA history.

MAK’S HITTING STREAK Freshman Makinzy Herzog has quietly turned into one of the most reliable and consistent hitters on the team.

After going hitless in four games on opening weekend and then injuring her foot, which caused her to miss seven games, Herzog has gotten at least one hit in 27 of her last 30 games including a 15-game hitting streak from March 2 to March 20.

Overall on the season, she is batting .347 with seven doubles, a triple, two home runs, 10 stolen bases, 15 RBI and 17 runs scored.

RELIABLE BASERUNNERSIn order to score 333 runs through the first 45 games of the season, you need a lot of baserunners. The Seminoles have reliably been on the base paths in 2019, as Florida State has had at least one baserunner in almost 85% of its innings at the plate (223-of-268), scoring runs in 134 of them, meaning that the Noles are scoring at least one run in 50% of their offensive innings.

STRONG DEFENSEAs impressive as the Florida State offense has been so far in 2019, the defense has also been key to the Seminole success as FSU leads the conference and ranks 15th in the nation with a .974 fielding percentage, committing just 30 errors through the first 45 games of the season.

LEADOFF HOME RUNSAlong with putting on pressure early in the game with 91 first-inning runs, the Seminoles have done a great job of starting innings as 15 of Florida State’s 69 home runs have been by the leadoff hitter in an inning.

MOST RUNS SCORED VS. OPPThe Seminoles have put up impressive numbers against almost all of their opponents this season, as against eight of the 25 teams Florida State has played this season, FSU has scored the most runs against them this season - RV Minnesota (17), Virginia (16), Elon (15), Lipscomb (14), RV Notre Dame (11), Florida Atlantic (10), No. 8 LSU (9) and No. 3 Oklahoma (7).

SINGLE-GAME RBI LEADERSThe Seminoles have been getting production from all over the lineup, and even off the bench, as there have been 11 different players this season that have been the top RBI contributor on a team, led by sophomore Sydney Sherrill who has accomplished it 10 times this season.

Overall, Florida State has had 86 different multi-RBI performances, with 25 games with three RBI, six with four RBI and Dani Morgan (at Virginia), Cali Harrod (at UCF) and Sydney Sherrill (at Louisville) who have posted five RBI.

KING CONTINUES SUCCESSRedshirt senior pitcher Meghan King has started 2019 much in the same way she ended 2018 as she earned a spot on the WCWS All-Tournament Team.

King has won 32 of her last 37 decisions in the circle and has allowed just 37 earned runs over her last 179.2 innings, which includes appearances against against No. 1 Oregon, No. 3 UCLA, No. 5 Washington, No. 6 Tennessee, No. 7 Georgia, No. 8 Florida, No. 8 LSU (2019), No. 11 LSU (2018) and No. 12 Arizona.

In her last 44 appearances, dating back to April 28, 2018, she has posted a record of 32-5 with a 1.23 ERA and 233 strikeouts over 219.1 IP.

RECORD PACE HOME RUNSThe Seminoles have been leaving the yard at an impressive rate in 2019, as FSU ranks fourth in the NCAA with 69 home runs, trailing Arizona (81), Oklahoma (77) and Virginia Tech (74). The 69 home runs are third-most in FSU single-season history and are just seven away from the school record of 76, set last season during the run to the NCAA National Championship.

The Seminoles are hitting 1.53 home runs per game through the first 45 games in 2019 and, based on averaging 65 games per season, FSU is on pace for 100 home runs, which would break the current record by 24 HR.

WINNING STREAKSFlorida State started the 2019 season with a 22-0 record, which marked the second-longest streak to begin a season, trailing only the 25-game streak to start the 1992.

Including the six games the Noles won to close out last season to win the 2018 NCAA National Championship, the Seminoles posted a 28-game winning streak, which ranks as the second-longest winning streak in program history.

King again earned conference accolades on March 19 after going 2-0 against Notre Dame with a 0.70 ERA, including a no-hitter on March 17, where she allowed just one baserunner in the top of the seventh.

King was named ACC pitcher of the week for the second time in a row, fourth time of 2019 and ninth time in her career on March 26 as she tossed another no-hitter, blanking NC State on March 22 and tossing another shutout on March 24 against the Wolfpack. Nearly 70% of the outs with King in the circle came via the strikeout as she recorded 23 Ks in 11.0 innings.

Carsyn Gordon picked up her first ACC Player of the Week accolade on March 26 as she posted a .643 batting average (9-for-14) and also added three walks, five stolen bases and six runs scored. She recorded at least one hit and one run in all five games against Florida A&M, North Florida and NC State.

King picked up her third consecutive ACC accolade on April 2 with another scoreless week, recording 10 strikeouts over 6.1 innings and three appearances at Virginia on March 29-31.

While not earning a conference honor, Dani Morgan was selected as one of the NFCA’s Top Performer’s on April 2 as she batted .714 (5-for-9) at Virginia, with all five going for extra base hits on four doubles and a home run, along with eight RBI and a 1.714 slugging percentage.

ACC PLAYERS OF THE WEEKMeghan King was recognized by the ACC on February 12 for her outstanding performance at the JoAnne Graf Classic. The redshirt senior pitcher pitched a pair of complete-game shutouts against Iowa State and allowed just five hits and two walks and had 15 strikeouts, earning her ACC Co-Pitcher of the Week honors. It marked the sixth time in King’s career that she had been named ACC Pitcher of the Week.

King was also recognized as one of the Top Performers during the first week by the NFCA.

Zoe Casas earned conference and national recognition on February 19 after carrying the Seminoles to a perfect 6-0 record at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational. She led the tournament with 10 hits and a .556 batting average as Florida State defeated three Top 10 teams - No. 3 Oklahoma, No. 6 Tennessee and No. 8 LSU – along with two teams receiving votes in Ohio State and Minnesota.

She finished the week with six RBI, seven runs scored, a double, two home runs, a .944 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .619. She reached base safely in eight consecutive plate appearances against Minnesota and Florida Atlantic, tallying six hits, two walks, two home runs and five RBI.

It is the fourth time in school history that a Seminole has been named USA Softball National Player of the Week, as Casas joined Sydney Sherrill (April 10, 2018), Kylee Hanson (February 20, 2018) and Jessica van der Linden (March 16, 2004).Cali Harrod garnered ACC and NFCA National Player of the Week awards on February 26 after an outstanding offensive performance at the Unconquered Invitational. She posted a .714 avg on 10-for-14 hitting, with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, eight RBI, 12 runs scored and a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts.

She recorded a streak of reaching base in 10 consecutive plate appearances, posted a .810 on-base percentage and slugged 1.429 for the week.

King earned her second ACC Pitcher of the Week accolade (and seventh of her career) on February 26 with a perfect 3-0 record in the circle and a 0.62 ERA over 11.1 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on five hits and four walks with 17 strikeouts.

NO-HITTER!A pair of Seminole newcomers made the most of their first appearance in the circle for the Garnet and Gold on February 10 as Kara Bilodeau and Makinzy Herzog combined to toss a five-inning no-hitter against UNC Wilmington at the JoAnne Graf Classic.

Bilodeau retired all nine batters she faced and recorded three strikeouts in the victory. Herzog hit a batter, but faced the minimum six hitters in her 2.0 innings, as Anna Shelnutt threw out the runner to end the fourth inning.

Redshirt senior Meghan King recorded the third no-hitter of her career against Notre Dame on March 17, as she retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced in a 5-0 victory. She allowed one runner on an FSU error in the top of the seventh and ended with three strikeouts.

Herzog and Bilodeau again combined for a no-hitter on March 19, blanking Florida A&M in a six-inning victory.

King recorded her second no-hitter in a row on NC State in a five-inning win against NC State on March 22.

There have been 28 no-hitters at Florida State under head coach Lonni Alameda, a feat which has been accomplished by 11 different players.

LIMITED TIME TRAILINGWith a 38-7 record to start the season, it is understandable that Florida State has not trailed in too many games.

In fact, the Seminoles have trailed in only 13 games, and in three cases, FSU came back to tie the game and take the lead in the next half inning.

After Sydney Romero’s solo home run gave No. 3 Oklahoma a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the third inning on Feburary 15, Elizabeth Mason led off the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field and was immediately followed by an HR by Anna Shelnutt to put the Seminoles in front 5-4, enroute to a 7-4 win.

On February 23, Lipscomb scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but Cali Harrod started the bottom of the first with a walk, stole second and scored on a one-out RBI single by Sydney Sherrill to tie the game. FSU would go on to win 14-2 in five innings.

After allowing four unearned runs in the first inning versus Dartmouth, the Seminoles tied the game in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run double by Makinzy Herzog, eventually defeating the Big Green, 8-4.

On March 10, Arizona led twice - 1-0 in the first and 3-1 in the third - but Dani Morgan’s three-run HR gave the Noles a 4-3 win to close out the series win.

Notre Dame scored a run in the top of the first on March 15, but Harrod hit a leadoff home run to tie the game in the bottom of the first as the Noles won 11-1. The Irish took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth on March 16 and went on to win 7-4.

A second-inning grand slam put NC State up 4-3 on March 23, but the Seminoles tied the game in the bottom of the third and went on to win 8-6.

Louisville scored a pair of first inning runs on April 6 in a 2-0 win and took a 5-3 lead in the fourth inning on April 8 before the Noles took the lead in the seventh inning, but Cardinals scored three in the bottom of the seventh for the walk-off win.

During the series at UNC on April 14-15, FSU was behind in a total of 24 plate appearances

Overall, the Noles have only had 143 plate appearances this season where FSU was trailing.

MEGHAN KKKKKKKING!Redshirt senior Meghan King has continued her in her growth as a pitcher, and in 2019, that has really shown in her strikeout rate.

Beginning with sub-5.0 strikeouts per seven inning rates as a freshman (4.4 with 127 in 200.2 IP) and sophomore (4.9 with 129 in 182.0 IP), she made great strides in 2018 as a junior, striking out opponents at a rate of 6.7 per seven innings (190 in 198.0 IP) on her way to WCWS All-Tournament Team honors.

The Parkland, Fla., native has come back for her final season even stronger, striking out opponents at a rate of 8.0 per seven innings so far in 2019 (157 in 136.2 IP).

SHINING SANDERCOCKFreshman Kathryn Sandercock has made the transition to collegiate softball very well so far in 2019 as the McLean, Va., native has amassed a 10-0 record and a 2.36 ERA so far in her career.

She allowed just three hits and one run over 5.1 innings against No. 3 Oklahoma on February 15 with zero walks and two strikeouts.

The freshman hasn’t allowed a walk in 11 of her 18 appearances on the season.

TWO-WAY THREATSContributing both at the plate and in the circle, junior Cassidy Davis and freshman Makinzy Herzog have been versatile threats for the Seminoles in 2019.

Davis is tied for fifth on the team with 32 RBI, and has a .314 batting average with four doubles, two triples and six home runs this season. In the circle, she has a 1-1 record in 14 appearances with 23.0 innings pitched.

Herzog has posted a 6-1 record as a pitcher with a 1.74 ERA in 14 appearances, giving up nine earned runs in 48.1 innings with 42 strikeouts. She has already combined to throw two no-hitters in her collegiate career, both with Kara Bilodeau (UNCW - Feb 10 and Florida A&M - March 19).

On the offensive side, the outfielder has a .347 batting average with seven doubles, a triple, two home runs, 15 RBI and 17 runs scored and posted a 15-game hitting streak from March 2 to March 20.

NCAA STATSFlorida State currently has a 38-7 record and ranks in the top 10 of the NCAA in seven different categories, including ranking fourth with 69 home runs and a .436 on base percentage, while coming in fifth in slugging percentage (.603) and scoring (7.40).

Individually, nine different Seminoles rank in the Top 100 of the nation in 18 different statistics, with Cali Harrod third in the NCAA with 54 runs scored. Carsyn Gordon’s 50 runs scored is sixth, while Sydney Sherrill has 12 home runs, which is good for 37th in the country. Meghan King is eighth with 20 wins and Kathryn Sandercock leads the ACC with 1.42 walks per seven innings.

5X DOUBLE-DIGIT RUNSThe Florida State offense has been running on all cylinders this season, scoring 333 runs through 45 games of the 2019 season.

The Noles have already tallied 12 games where they scored 10+ runs, including five in a row on February 22-23 in wins over Elon (15-1), Lipscomb (13-0), Samford (13-0), Lipscomb (14-2) and Samford (13-1).

That set a school record for consecutive games with 10+ runs scored, surpassing the results from the 2017 season when the Noles earned wins by the score of 12-3 (CSUN), 17-3 (UC Davis), 10-0 (CSUN) and 10-1 (Cal State Fullerton) from March 5-8, which was only time that FSU had ever tallied four consecutive games with double-digit runs before.

SENIOR CLASS FINALISTRedshirt senior Meghan King was selected as one of the ten Finalists for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award in collegiate softball.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

Florida State has had three student-athletes win the Senior CLASS Award, including Baseball’s James Ramsey in 2012 and Softball’s Lacey Waldrop (2015) and Alex Powers (2017).

5X BACK-TO-BACK HRHitting can be contagious and the Seminoles have caught the home run bug this season as there have been five different times that the Seminoles have hit back-to-back home runs in 2019.

UNDEFEATED AT SPC ELITEFlorida State excelled at the inaugural St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, hosted by ESPN on February 15-17.

The Seminoles had a packed weekend with two games in three consecutive days, but triumphed against quality competition, defeating No. 3 Oklahoma (7-4), No. 6 Tennesee (5-2), No. 8 LSU (9-1 in 6 inn), RV Ohio State (3-1), RV Minnesota (17-6) and Florida Atlantic (10-5).

It was a complete team effort offensively as Florida State batted .375 as a team, with a .720 slugging percentage as the Seminoles hit 15 home runs spread among nine different players on the weekend.

All nine starters in the lineup against No. 6 Tennessee on February 17 had hit at least one home run over the course of the weekend.

FIVE HR VS. NO. 3 OKLAHOMAFlorida State used the long ball to carry the Noles to a 7-4 win over No. 3 Oklahoma on February 15 at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational.

In the second inning, Dani Morgan hit a solo home run off OU starting pitcher Shannon Saile, and after a single by Zoe Casas, Cassidy Davis crushed a two-run HR to center to make it 3-0.

Oklahoma took a 4-3 lead to the top of the fourth inning, but Elizabeth Mason and Anna Shelnutt hit back-to-back home runs off Saile to put the Noles back in front. Giselle Juarez entered to pitch for the Sooners and Carsyn Gordon hit a two-run home run to left center in the fifth inning for the 7-4 final score.

The five home runs hit by Florida State tied single-game home run records for both teams as the Seminoles had only once hit five home runs in a game since 2006 (at Syracuse, April 8, 2017) and Oklahoma had only given up five HRs once before against Baylor on April 10, 2006.

COACHA’S 500TH AT FSUWith a 13-1 victory over Samford on February 24, FSU head coach Lonni Alameda won her 500th game in her 11th season as the Seminole skipper (521-157-1, .768 winning percentage). She now holds a career record of 678-315-2, as she coached at UNLV from 2004-08.

UNCONQUERED ON FEB 22-24Florida State played into the namesake of the tournament they hosted on February 22-24 - the Unconquered Invitational - as the Seminoles dominated both offensively and defensively on the weekend.

As a team, the Seminoles batted .528 (66-for-125) with 68 runs scored, 13 home runs, 16 doubles and a .968 slugging percentage. Nine different players had at least four hits on the weekend and 14 total Seminoles scored a run over the five games.

In the circle, the quintet of Meghan King, Kathryn Sandercock, Cassidy Davis, Kara Bilodeau and Makinzy Herzog combined to allow a 0.56 ERA with two earned runs (four total) and 16 hits and 30 strikeouts over 25.0 innings as the opponents batted just .174 on the weekend.

JOANNE GRAF CLASSICOn February 8-10, 2019, the Florida State softball program honored its former head coach, Dr. JoAnne Graf, with the inaugural JoAnne Graf Classic. The first home tournament will be named in honor of the NFCA Hall of Fame coach that won 1,437 games in her career, including 10 ACC titles, seven WCWS appearances and AIAW National Championships in 1981 and 1982.

The aim of each JoAnne Graf Classic is to bring at least one team that has a connection to the Hall of Fame Coach as her impact to the game of softball covers the nation from coast to coast.

TOP-RANKED SEMINOLESFlorida State was the No. 1-ranked team for the first five weeks of 2019 by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association, and along with the final poll in 2018 and eight times during the 2017 season, the Seminoles have been the top-ranked team in the country 14 different times in program history.

That is tied with Tennessee and Arizona State for the seventh-most in the history of the poll.

SCORELESS STREAKAfter allowing two runs to UNCW in the opening game of the 2019 season, the Florida State pitching staff shut down the opponent offenses and recorded four consecutive shutouts before giving up a solo home run by Ohio State on February 15.

It marked the first time the Seminoles have posted four shutouts in a row since March 17-22, 2017 when FSU swept the three-game series with Notre Dame without allowing a run, followed by a 4-0 win at UCF.

The streak of 31.0 innings without giving up a run is a far cry from the FSU and NCAA record of 124.0 scoreless innings, set by the Seminoles from February 20 to March 19, 1993.

ACC PRESEASON FAVORITEFor the sixth consecutive season, Florida State was chosen as the preseason favorite to win the 2019 ACC regular season championship, as voted on by the league’s 12 coaches.

FSU earned 121 points and all 11 of the eligible first-place votes, as teams were not allowed to vote for themselves. The Seminoles gave their vote to Virginia Tech.

Notre Dame (102 points) and North Carolina (95) also finished in the top three of voting.

ALL-TIME NFCA NO. 1 TEAMS


ACC-BIG 10 CHALLENGE2019 marked the fourth year of the ACC-Big 10 Challenge, where members from each conference met in tournaments throughout the Southeast on February 15-17.

This season, there were four host sites for the Challenge - NC State (Wisconsin, Nebraska and Pitt), Georgia Tech (Michigan State, Illinois and Boston College), North Carolina (Michigan, Northwestern and Louisville), as well as Duke (Penn State, Indiana and Syracuse).

Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Minnesota competed at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational, and any games between those teams will be included in the Challenge.

The Big Ten won the 2019 challenge, 23-13, to even the series at 2-2. The ACC won in both 2018 (26-14) and 2017 (19-13), while the Big Ten won the inaugural Challenge in 2016 with a record of 20-12.

Overall, the four-year ACC/Big Ten Challenge is deadlocked at 70-70 after 140 games have been played.

Florida State has a combined record of 11-3 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and have won 11 of their last 12 games of the Challenge, sweeping Minnesota in 2016 and 2018, and both Northwestern and Nebraska in 2017.

WATCH OUT!Heading into the 2019 season, redshirt senior Meghan King and sophomore Sydney Sherrill were named to the Top 50 Watch List for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year.

It marks the sixth season in a row Florida State placed a student-athlete on the preseason watch list as they joined King and Jessie Warren in 2018, Jessica Burroughs and Alex Powers in 2017, Burroughs in 2016, Lacey Waldrop and Maddie O’Brien in 2015 and Waldrop in 2014.

Waldrop won the award in 2014 after leading the NCAA with 38 wins and finished third nationally with a 1.13 ERA. Florida State was the first school in the nation with multiple winners of the USA Softball Player of the Year award, as Jessica van der Linden was given the national award in 2004.

FRESH FACESThe Seminoles return 14 players from the 2018 National Championship season and welcome eight newcomers who are wearing the Garnet and Gold for the first time in 2019.

A seven-member freshman class is highlighted by Kathryn Sandercock (McLean, Va.) who is a member of the USA Junior National Team. Sandercock, along with Makinzy Herzog (Missouri City, Texas), were named their state’s Gatorade Player of the Year. Kiersten Landers (Scott Depot, W.V.) is another out-of-state freshman, while Maegan Tomlinson (Tallahassee), Bianca Cruz (Melbourne), Savannah Parker (St. Johns) and Morgan Noah (Tampa) all remain in the Sunshine State for their collegiate career.

Kara Bilodeau (Cumming, Ga.) is a sophomore pitcher that transfers to Florida State after playing one year at Auburn. She pitched 11.0 innings and allowed zero runs and three hits for the Tigers.

SOFTBALL AMERICA TOP 100Florida State placed five players on the inaugural Softball America Top 100 - No. 9 Meghan King, No. 30 Sydney Sherrill, No. 88 Carsyn Gordon, No. 95 Anna Shelnutt and No. 100 Kathryn Sandercock.

The Seminoles are tied for the second-most selections and trail only the six Top 100 players from Oklahoma.

FSU will play against 30 of the other 95 Top 100 selections, including five of the top six players - No. 2 Amanda Lorenz, No. 3 Jocelyn Alo, No. 4 Kelly Barnhill, No. 5 Aubrey Leach and No. 6 Shay Knighten.

RETURNING POWERFlorida State returns seven defensive starters and one starting pitcher from the 2018 NCAA National Championship team.

Despite losing a pair of All-Americans in Jessie Warren and Morgan Klaevemann, the FSU offense returns 12 total players that combined to tally 399 hits, 306 runs, 94 doubles, 17 triples, 54 home runs, 289 RBI and 120 stolen bases.

If those returners were their own team in 2018, they would have ranked in the top 35 in the NCAA in five different categories - doubles (T-7th), stolen bases (8th), triples (T-14th), runs (34th) and home runs (T-35th).

Those players accumulated those stats as Florida State had the No. 1 RPI and No. 1-ranked out-of-conference schedule in the nation.

SMART - Being smart, in a wide variety of disciplines, is a cornerstone of the Florida State softball program. In school, it allows you to achieve a degree and plan for a future after softball. At practice, it means training with a purpose, honing your skills and gaining experience by not just going through the motions. In the game, it means having a plan at plate offensively or a pitching and defensive shift plan for opposing hitters based on various scouting reports. Off the field, it means making wise decisions with time management and other activities to be able to be at your best.

AGGRESSIVE - You aren’t just given things in life, you must aggressively pursue your dreams in order to

achieve them. Being aggressive means taking that extra base on a ball in the gap, stealing second when you need

to get a runner into scoring position, heading to your teacher’s office hours to talk about things you may not have

understood in class, going after a hitter with your best pitch in the best location and challenging yourself to become

the best you can be because you are passionate about helping the team succeed.

COMPETITIVE - A team-based sport is one of the most competitive dynamic there is in life. To be successful, you need to be competitive in many areas. We strive to be competitive on the field, winning individual games, along with conference and national championships. We are competitive with each other on the team, knowing that we make each other better as each one raises their level of skill and accomplishments. We are also competitive off the field, in the classroom and in the workforce as there are many who would seek to be where we are, but only few will attain it.

COMMITTED - The previous four core values mean nothing unless everyone is committed to it. Obstacles

and challenges will come up. Losses on the field and issues off of it will occur and cause problems that will need to be

addressed. But when we are committed - to each other, to the team, to the goals that have been set - very little can

disrupt our goals and pursuits. A unified force with a united passion is very difficult to stop and our commitment to

the vision and the process will enable us to be successful.

CCore Values Shape Culture• The Seminole Softball team has incorporated these values into all areas of team life, both on and off the field. • Each fall since 2015, FSU has experienced “The Program”, a two-day boot camp event where the team has worked on communication, problem solv-ing, endurance, perseverance, paying attention to details and teamwork while accomplishing tasks on the field, at a pool, on the beach, in the woods, among others.• Each year, the team has been able to build trust within the team by attaining goals and going through the physical and mental adversity that The Program imposes on them as a collective team and unit. • The Seminoles also start each game and practice at “The GATE”, which at JoAnne Graf Field is a physical gate, but it helps to focus on being present for the team, allowing outside distractions to stay outside and to “Give your All to the Team Everyday.”


“PLAY FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T”One of the foundational principles that Florida State softball is built on is, “Play for those who can’t.” The Seminoles have displayed that throughout the years, including recently with people like Taylor Foster, Madison Marshall, Hayden Stone and Monk Bonasorte.

Taylor Foster became part of the FSU family in 2013 through a connection with the ACC, and despite grow-ing up in North Carolina, dreamed of playing softball for the Seminoles. Foster was diagnosed with bone cancer in at the age of 13 and her passion and enthusiasm in the face of such adversity never faltered. The Noles would routinely stop by to see Taylor and her family when playing NC area schools and the players and coaches would often keep touch via calls, texts and video chats. After her passing in April of 2014, an annual memorial tournament and camp was started and organized by FSU softball players, coaches and support staff for youth in North Carolina to share Taylor’s passion for the game and tell of her legacy.

In 2016, and through a partnership with The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, FSU softball adopted Madison Marshall who had been diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2014 at the age of 14. The Friends of Jaclyn Foun-dation was created in 2005 and pairs children with pediatric brain tumors with collegiate sports teams, as they have seen the symbotic relationships that are formed help both the child going through such a difficult situation, but also the teams that are able to come along side a family and help them fight and learn a new appreciation and persepctive on life.

In 2019, again in partnership with the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, the Seminoles adopted Hayden Stone, who had been recently diagnosed with a soft tissue cancer and lives in Tallahassee.

Monk Bonasorte, one of the main FSU athletic administrators responsible for hiring Lonni Alameda as head coach in the fall of 2008, had played football at FSU in the late 70s, and was voted into the FSU Ath-letics Hall of Fame in 1995. As a result, he bled Garnet and Gold and became a signifcant supporter of FSU softball, as well as all of the other sports on campus. In October of 2015, Bonasorte was diagnosed with brain cancer, yet never wavered in his passion for FSU and life. Right up to his passing in November of 2016, he continued to give his life to this university and be an example of the Florida State “Unconquered” spirit. In 2017, the Lonni Alameda Softball Camps began the Monk Bonasorte Camp (Camp MB42), where the young players in attendance not only learn about the skills of softball, but also about life and who Monk was, what he meant to Florida State and how he battled through such adversity. All of the proceeds of the annual camp go to the FSU Monk Bonasorte Scholarship, and to date, the camp has raised over $8,500.

There are numerous other relationships that have been formed over the years with young fans like Amber Howard and Maddie Briscoe, and even former players such as Dana Bailey that have battled cancer, the FSU players and staff know that there is much more to life than just this game. Though several are now gone, they are certainly not forgotten and remain a significant part of Seminole softball to this day.
