JUNE 2018
The Newsletter of Rotary District 7300 Including Allegheny, Beaver and Parts of Westmoreland Counties, Pennsylvania
Dear Rotary Friends:
District Governor Ward Garner
We each try to remember to live each day as though it might be our last. Don't we all have to say to our good friend (PDG) Bill Segar, though: "We just weren't ready for YOUR last day." Arlene and all, Bill will be sorely missed by all his Rotarian friends, literally all over the world, and especially right here at home. And--who would have guessed that we would lose both Bill and William in such rapid succession? Please see a further and fond farewell to both PDGs, next page.
It has been my honor and privilege to serve you and our District this year. Please remember that, truly, Rotarians Are Unique--and this means you. Please, keep giving of your own unique gifts in the global reach of Rotary service. We haven't done quite enough, yet. For as long as I am able, I shall still be right here with you, to do my part.
This year's RYLA (Rotary Leadership Youth Awards) for District 7300 began Sunday, 17 June 2018 at La Roche College. Director Stacy Gallagher came up with an innovative hands-in-the-air bonding exercise for this year's participants, shown above., as part of the opening exercises.
RYLA began as a Rotary International program in 1960, and currently recognizes--and meaningfully bolsters--the leadership potential in thousands of young people, ages 13-30, all around the globe.

Shaler Area Rotarian earns Distinguished Alumni Circle Award
By Clinton Cable
Rotarian Laurien Sibomana, a 2004 graduate from La Roche College and member of the Shaler Area Rotary Club, was honored in May 2018 by La Roche College with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni award ,due to his dedication in giving back to his native country of Rwanda. He is a graduate of the College’s Pacem In Terris Institute ,which translates to Peace on Earth, which is a program that helps students to escape war-torn countries and to study in the United States. Laurien is paying his opportunity forward, using his background as a Type I diabetes research assistant at the University of Pittsburgh. Laurien has now implemented a Type I diabetes registry in Rwanda, has set up a diabetes clinic and vocational training, and has established multiple peer-support programs, all as a cohesive diabetes management program.
His efforts are paying off. “Seeing more than 1,000 youth in Rwanda alive and smiling has changed my professional life ,since the life expectancy for a child with diabetes in Sub-Saharan Africa used to be less than one year” and “I feel that I played a part in changing the course [of these prognoses],” he said.

Rotary Club of Fox Chapel Area Raises $33,000 at Charity Golf Outing and Raffle
by Tom Benic
The Rotary Club of Fox Chapel Area raised more than $33,000 at its annual Charity Golf Classic and Raffle, 21 May 2018, at River Forest Country Club in Freeport, Pennsylvania. All of the money raised will be distributed this summer to local and international charities the Rotary Club supports, according to Tom Benic, club president. The primary beneficiary this year is Circles of Sharpsburg, a nationally-known system of connecting people across socioeconomic lines to move families out of poverty.
A capacity registration of 23 foursomes played at this year's event.
The foursome of Jeff Coulter, Chris Becker, Chris Miceli and Dave McNaughton (pictured above) won the event, edging out the foursome of Bill Bickford, Brad Gill, T.J. Roser and Greg Moorehead.
Skill Prize winners were: Longest Drive--T.J. Roser and Jenna Barbour; Longest Putt--Larry Rich and Ruth Ciemielewski; and Closet to the Pin--Charlie Haeussner.

Genevieve Oduor International Rotarian
By Karl Ohrman What some Rotarians don’t realize is that Rotary has a last name – Rotary
International. Genevieve Oduor is a wonderful example of the International flavor
of Rotary. Genevieve grew up in Kenya, East Africa.
She was graduated from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a BS in International Business.
She also earned credits towards her MA in Adult
and Community Education. In addition, she attended Walden University, where she completed credits towards an MBA.
Genevieve took a break from graduate school to
focus on raising her young children and to work on
her career. She has now been accepted to Excelsior
College to complete her graduate studies.
Genevieve is a Vice-President at S & T Bank as a Business Development Officer
& Community Banking Manager. She has worked and managed several
branches in different markets at S&T Bank.
Genevieve has received numerous performance-related awards and has been involved in the community:
- Served on S&T Bank’s Retail Advisory Board in 2017
- Sampson Family YMCA Board Member
- Annual Campaign Chairman (2018) Sampson Family YMCA
- Member African American Chamber of Commerce Western PA
- Mentors minority and underprivileged youths here and in Kenya
- Past Vice President Allegheny East NAACP for 5 years
- Pittsburgh Business Exchange Member
- Rotary Club of Monroeville member since 2009
7
- Rotary Club of Monroeville President 2018-2019
- Assistant District Governor for DG Bill Segar and Herm Dieckmann
- Two-time Paul Harris Fellow
Genevieve serves as the Monroeville Rotary Foundation and International
Services Committee Chairman. She successfully spearheaded the Kenya Grace
Water Project that continues to provide clean water to over 4000 villagers as
well as three schools and a local church.
This water project is her
proudest Rotary
achievement. In spite of
many obstacles, she, with the help of her beloved
Rotary Club and many
others here and in Kenya, all
the obstacles were
overcome and the $60,000
water project was
successful.
Monroeville Rotary continues to be involved in other international projects such
as Limbs for Sri Lanka, the Nicaragua playground project (completed), Latrines in
Cote d’ Ivoire and a library in Ghana.
Genevieve is currently spearheading a Community Library Project in Kenya. This
project has already shipped over 1000 books donated by Monroeville Library.
Another 5000 books have been donated by Monroeville Library and The Ellis
School has donated another 1000 books. The goal is to raise $35,000 to make this
Library Project a reality. The land where the library will be located is already
secured. The Library will be located on a lot owned by the local primary school, and will be accessible to both adults and all children in the Community.
Genevieve serves as State Representative for KWITU, a diverse Women’s social and business networking group with over 11,000 members who have
Kenyan Roots or family nationwide. She represents the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, together with two other Representatives.
8
Genevieve has many hobbies and activities outside Rotary, such as music &
dancing and binge-watching mindless Reality TV with her girlfriends. She likes to read biographies and spend time with family
and friends.
Rotarian Som Sharma (she calls him her
Rotary Dad) introduced her to Rotary in
2009. He often told her that she would make
a good Rotarian. One day Genevieve caved
and agreed to go to a meeting. That was it.
She was hooked!
Genevieve loves District 7300 events and
interacting with other members of the District. She proudly states, “I love the
compassion and dedication Rotarians have for people they do not even know. I
love how hard Rotarians work to help make the world a better place. Service
above Self!”
Genevieve considers herself a super-networker and her networks are far and wide (global). Rotary has allowed her to expand her networks even further. She
uses those connections to help others. She has gained many good business
customers through Rotary. She also has connected a number of her customers
and fellow Rotarians to various contacts.
Genevieve is a little shy, although her childhood dream was to be a singer
and entertainer. Now she just sings in her car.
Needing a headline for this profile, Genevieve asked her co- worker to
describe her in one short sentence. Her answer was, “Genevieve is a Force of
Nature. Warm with people like the sun, excited about life like a refreshing
wind. When she is upset, she is a good storm. When she is happy, it’s like
music in the air.”
Genevieve’s mother, on the other hand, calls her Quick Silver because according to her she has always been a busybody and quick on her feet. The dictionary
description of Quick Silver is something that moves and changes very quickly or
that is difficult to hold or contain. An apt description of this super International
Rotarian.
