2016 State Youth Conference
This state youth conference is for any youth currently in 8th-12th grades. They will attend workshop sessions, listen to motivational speakers and attend a dance. This is a won-derful opportunity for all to attend. Must be registered by June 1st, late registration open until June 10th. Transportation is normally a separate fee– this year we are lucky enough to have a donation to our Johnson County youth and will only cost $20 for Johnson County 4-H members. You MUST be registered by June 1st in order to secure your seat on the bus. Af-ter that empty seats will be opened up to youth from across Regions15. HURRY, what are you waiting for!

4k for 4-H
The Johnson County Youth Council has decided to cancel this event for this year and
hopes to bring it back next year. Thank you to all that registered early, there was just
not enough pre-registered people for the committee to go ahead with the event.
Again this summer Clover University will be making a stop! Keep that summer learning
alive with STEM learning for youth currently in K-7. Registration forms are attached at
the end of this newsletter. Sign up today, some camps have very few open slots left!

All State Fair entries will be done online
this year through member’s 4hOnline accounts
through a program called FairEntry starting June 1.
The deadline is July 1. Failure to meet this deadline will mean ineligibility to show at the
State Fair.
NOTE: Verifying animals at weigh-in for State Fair DOES NOT constitute an entry. You
must still register online BUT turn your payment in to the Johnson County Extension Of-
fice by July 1. State Fair Rules, regulations and entry forms are available online at http://

Animal Entry Cards DUE JULY 1st!
ALL blue cards have been mailed to the ex-
hibitors homes. If you have not received it
you need to call or stop by the office to re-
ceive a duplicate. These are due in the office
by the end of the day July 1st. There will be
a $1 late fee per card, per business day.

Johnson County 4-H/FFA Rabbit Exhibitors:
We will be having a rabbit workshop on Monday, June 20th at the Johnson County Extension Office from 7:00-8:00 pm. During this workshop we will be discussing how to sign up on the blue livestock cards (July 1st) using the information from your rabbit nominations that you completed online by May 15th, what to ex-pect and bring to the fair, showmanship pointers, how to show your rabbit, and different types of rabbits for hands-on activities. This workshop is highly recommended for all members to attend and learn more about their project. Rabbit exhibitors also need to bring questions that they may have, as we will have an op-portunity for a question and answer session. Looking forward to seeing a lot of rabbit exhibitors on June 20th!

Pancake Breakfast Tickets are on sale now!
Our annual breakfast is Sunday,
July 10th 7am-12pm. Leaders
were given the family packets and
information at their spring meeting.
Each family is asked to sell at least
one packet of tickets. Please let
the Extension Office know if you
need more!
This fundraiser is used to support
the $30/yearly member program
fee. Ticket selling incentives: As
you sell a complete book of tickets (to one individual or ten different people—all the same)
put your family name on the back of the stapled stubs before your club leader returns them
to the office. If your family sells 3 or more complete books of tickets you be entered into a
drawing for pizza/pop coupons to be used at fair OR a reserved parking spot. Remember
all stubs and pancake money must be turned in by the breakfast day. Winners of the in-
centives will be notified by email. Keep selling those tickets!!! More are available at the Ex-
tension Office
4-H CLUBS– We are again having a Silent Auction area at the Pancake Breakfast. Please
drop your baskets off at the Extension Office so we can highlight these on our website.
Don’t forget to attach your club name, the basket value, and the list of contents to the bas-
ket.

The Clothing Event interviews will be held on Wednesday, July 13. These interviews are
for 4-Her’s interested in interviewing in either the Fashion Revue, Clothing Selection, or
$15 Challenge categories. 4-Her’s are asked to give us their availability for interview times

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING - Sign up now!
The Johnson County Extemporaneous Speaking Contest will be held on Thursday, July 7 at 6:30 PM.
Senior 4-Her’s who have completed 9th - 12th grades are encouraged to give this exciting opportunity a
try. The 4-Her will draw three possible topics, select one to speak on, and then will be given 30 minutes
to prepare their speech. The participants will be provided with reference materials and notecards for writ-
ing their speeches. Each speech should be at least four minutes long but no longer than six minutes. Two
presenters will be selected to represent Johnson County at the State Fair. More information can be found
in the Fairbook. The deadline for registration is Monday, June 20. Please contact Kelsey at the Extension

SHARE THE FUN - Register your act now!!
We are looking for individuals, pairs, trios, clubs to sign up to perform at the 4-
H talent show, Share The Fun! Share The Fun is held on Tuesday, July 26 at
6:00 PM. The 4-Hers participating must be in 5th through 12th grades, unless
a group is performing. For group acts, 80% of the group must be made up of
members in 5th grade or above. Singing, dancing, skits, and musical perfor-
mances are all acceptable acts. Performances are not to exceed eight minutes
in length. Three acts will be selected to advance to the Iowa State Fair. Three
State Fair Alternate acts will also be selected. More information can be found
in the Fair book. This is a great opportunity for 4-Hers to share their talents
with others and to have a fun time doing it! Register your act with your club
leader by Friday, July 8.

10304X My 4-H: A Special Photography Exhibition – A single photography that tells the story of 4-H and shows the 4-H’ers perspective of the 4-H experience. Pho-tos should help the public gain a better understanding about today’s dynamic and ex-panded 4-H opportunities.
My 4-H Special Rules:
1. Photographs will be submitted digitally by the 4-H’er directly to the Iowa state 4-H office. Uploading instructions will be available after May 1, 2016, but have not been released yet by the state office. All entries must be received by July 10, 2016.
2. One submission per 4-H’er. Photos must be taken by the 4-H’er.
3. Photos in this class DO NOT need to be evaluated and selected through a county process before submission.
County Fair Digital Entries- 4-H members are allowed to submit 5 photos to the
fair this year. Can be all digital, all print or a combination of both. All digital files
must be submitted to [email protected] by 5pm on Friday, July 22th. NO
LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED.
IS YOUR FSQA CERTIFICATION CURRENT?
If you intend to show at the Johnson County 4-H & FFA Fair with Market Beef,
Breeding Beef, Dairy Cattle, Dairy Goat, Meat Goat, Sheep, Poultry, Swine, or Rabbit,
FSQA (Food Safety Quality Assurance) is REQUIRED through a certified representa-
tive. This must be completed in our office by JUNE 30th, 2016!!!
Juniors (grades 4-6) are REQUIRED by the State of Iowa to attend a training session.
Int (grade 7 &8) and Seniors (grade 9-12) have the option to attend a yearly training or
take a test to pass out. Please make an appointment at the Extension Office to get this
taken care of ASAP.

CLOVER KID INFORMATION
Youth enrolling in Kindergarten through Third grade 4-H/Youth Programs in Johnson County are eligi-
ble to exhibit in the Non-Animal Division. Up to two entries will be accepted on Sunday, July 24 from
11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Montgomery Hall. Please label your exhibits with your name, club name, age
and hometown. A participatory ribbon will be given. The project is not eligible for premiums or county
award honors. The purpose of the K-3 program is to focus on doing age appropriate skills in a non-
competitive environment. Exhibits will need to meet county fair requirements.
Bucket/Bottle, Goat, Sheep Project Areas
For youth in grades kindergarten through 3rd grade (as of January 1, 2015)
Parent should inform the Extension staff of the youth’s intent to participate and provide the youth’s name,
parent’s name, address, and phone number.
Youth may exhibit one animal per class.
The youth MUST be a resident of Johnson County or attend an adjoining school district (i.e. Mid-Prairie, Col-
lege Community, West Branch, or Clear Creek-Amana).
The purpose of the class is to: 1) Develop interest in the project area(s); 2) Create a positive experience for the
youth at the county fair in a non-competitive environment; 3) Develop self-esteem and confidence.
The class will be held at the conclusion of the showmanship classes of each division.
BUCKET/BOTTLE project
Must provide their own calf or use an current 4-H/FFA bucket/bottle calf.
Calves must be healthy and free of infectious disease.
4-H calf is limited to one class in the open division;.
Calf must be born between January 1-July 1, 2015.
Calves can be weighed from 7:00 – 9:00 a.m. Thursday morning at the scale house if desired. (NOT RE-
QUIRED)
This is a non-competitive event; all participants will receive the same recognition. There will be no interview or
record book requirement.
Open class calves will be released immediately following the conclusion of the bucket/bottle show.
It is recommended that calves weigh less than 250 pounds; parent/helper may enter the ring and assist the youth
during the class. Youth cannot bring the calf back the following year in the second year market beef class.
GOAT & SHEEP project
Youth will borrow an animal already at the fair from a current 4-H/FFA member. The youth’s family must make
arrangements to borrow the lamb/goat.
