Why Support ‘Youth at Risk’ Benefit?

Dear Saints Members/Alumni: As you know the Saints have done a wonderful job fundraising for local causes and charities in the past. This year St. Clair Child & Youth Services is the charity of choice. Particularly Youth At Risk. I imagine that the term “Youth At Risk” isn’t that meaningful to everyone so I thought I would send this out to make it a little clearer and hopefully motivate you to get behind this event. Let me start by saying that I work at St. Clair Child & Youth Services and as a result I am quite familiar with the needs and struggles of kids in Sarnia-Lambton. However, I understand that the issue of mental health is not a com-mon topic of discussion, despite the fact most certainly all of us have been affected directly or indirectly. Allow me to share some facts that will hopefully help give you a little perspective on the mental health issues kids in Ontario and Sarnia-Lambton face. Quick Facts Regarding Child and Youth Mental Health: Approximately 1 in 5 children and youth (that’s over 654,000) in Ontario have a mental health disorder Mental health issues often begin at a young age — about 70 per cent of mental health challenges have their

onset in childhood and adolescence. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth aged 10 – 19 years, second only to accidental death Only 1 in 5 children are receiving treatment for their disorders The economic cost attributable to untreated mental health disorders in Ontario is $22 billion The most common mental health issues for children and youth are: Anxiety Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) - also known as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) Depression Mood disorders Schizophrenia Eating disorders Our Community: The numbers of youth struggling with mental health disorders in Sarnia-Lambton are similar to that found in many communities across Ontario. Chances are you or somebody you know is struggling with mental illness of some sort. Sadly, it has taken some tragedies in our community with a number of youth committing suicide to bring this to the forefront of many people’s attention. All too often there is a stigma attached to mental illness that prevents real conversations and creates a barrier for many to seek out the help they need. For the past number of years St. Clair Child & Youth Services, in partnership with Bluewater Health has offered a Crisis Follow-Up Program, targeting “Youth At Risk”. This program identifies youth who are at high risk to harm themselves and ensures that they get priority access to mental health services without a wait. Over the past 2-3 years the number of Youth At Risk referred for priority service has increased over 400%. Obvi-ously, this has placed a huge burden on resources. By supporting the Sarnia Saints Rugby Club’s “Youth At Risk” Fundraiser you are helping St. Clair Child & Youth Services get these children, youth and families the supports they need and helping get their lives back on track. The Saints Executive with the support of Assante Management are hard at work planning another successful fund-raising event. I hope that you will join me in supporting this wonderful cause and help make a difference for youth in our community. Please forward this email to those you know. Sincerely, Craig McKenzie A.K.A – Mac

On This Day March 18, 1924

1924 The United States defeated France 17-3 in Paris to win the last Olympic Gold Medal

awarded for Rugby.

The Americans, with a team based heavily on Stanford University in California, met France

at the Stade Colombes. The US led 3-0 at the break and scored four more tries after the

interval as heavy tackling derived from American Football intimidated and exhausted the

French, winning 17-3.

The French team took it well. The crowd did not. An American reserve was assaulted and

both his team-mates and referee Albert Freethy, who a few months later would issue the

first sending-off in international history when he dismissed All Black Cyril Brownlie, need-

ed police protection. The 'Star Spangled Banner' was howled down as the medals were

presented.

In 1924 the only other entrant was Romania who conceded 100 points to the two final-

ists. The USA's triumph was not a total shock as they were the reigning champions having

beaten France 8-0 in the only match at the 1920 Antwerp games.

T he Sarnia Saints, for the 2nd year, have teamed up with Anita Trusler, Captain of

Team Sparlings Propane. In 2012, the team of 50 plus riders raised over

$52,000 for Multiple Sclerosis, making Team Sparling Propane the 3rd highest fund-

raiser.

Six members of the Saints participated in the event in our first year of our partnership.

We are currently at 57 riders and 9 of them are from the Saints. If you plan to regis-

ter, please do so by the end of March to ensure that you get a team jersey. Unable to

ride but want to donate, please visit our team page Multiple Sclerosis Bike Tour - July
