Since the 2010 Excellence Awards Dinner wrapped up, the Excellence Committee has been diligently working away to

further simplify the nomination process, with an eye to addressing any concerns prior to the launch of the 2011 Excellence Awards nominations. These efforts have provided the following results:

• The nomination forms are now in three parts, however, the nominator still only has to complete Part 1, which is 100 words to describe why you feel this company should be nominated based on that category’s criteria.

• The online nomination forms are now easier to submit, with a ‘Submit’ button at the bottom of page 1 (for a third-party nomination) and at the bottom of page 4 for self-nominations; as well, each online nomination form includes online instructions.

• To remove any ambiguity as to who is qualified to be nominated, we have modified the criteria so that all categories begin with “In recognition of…”.

• The nomination forms now ask the nominator to include the physical address and website address (if there is one), for the nominee; this information will provide additional value for the judges when making their determinations.

• The nomination forms now provide the opportunity for the nominee to provide testimonials with their submission; any testimonials that can be provided would be of assistance for the judges when they are making their determinations however, with the exception of the Business Citizen nominations, it is NOT a requirement to include testimonials with a nomination submission.

• And, finally, the “Manufacturing” category is now called “Supply Chain”; this name change is to reflect that, along with “locally manufactured product”, the criteria has been amended to also include wholesale/distributing, and logistics (which may include transportation, warehousing and/or packaging); we believe this category/criteria change will provide more inclusivity for our area businesses to be nominated and recognized for their Business Excellence.

As we have done for the past couple of years now, when providing a third-party nomination, all you have to do is choose the category the nominee deserves to be in, provide us with 100 words to describe why you believe this company should be nominated, and then submit the nomination to us. We will contact the nominee for the additional information required for the judging process.

aSustainable Peterborough will define a 25-year vision for the GPA, setting directions, goals, actions, and metrics for balancing the economic, environmental, and socio-cultural pillars of sustainability. You may recognize this as the “triple bottom line”, a term used widely today in business literature.

Currently, we are seeking feedback from as many groups and individuals as possible in order to build the Vision. Kindly consider taking a few minutes to fill out our VERY short (essentially two-question) survey, which can be found at www.sustainablepeterborough.ca.

April was our “Take Over the Downtown Scavenger Hunt”. This event was a huge success and a fun way to get to know one another as well as some of our downtown member businesses. Thank you to all members who participated in this event and for opening your doors to us!

In May, YPG welcomed Michael Skinner to speak and he spoke on his company’s growth through team dynamics, as well as being local in Peterborough. Having a good team is key to the success of a business and selecting this team must be done strategically to ensure compatibility, harmony and growth.

Coming up in the month of July, YPG will be combined with the Business After Hours being on Tuesday July 5th for the Chamber’s Annual Summer Social, which is always a highlight of the season. We will see you back in August at The Venue for Speed Networking!

Meredith Carter, Manager of Environmental Services, representing the Otonabee-Peterborough Source Protection Authority, addressed the members on the topic of protecting municipal sources of drinking water. During her presentation Meredith provided an overview of the Clean Water Act, 2006 and described the drinking water source protection process. She also highlighted best management practices that local business owners can implement to protect sources of municipal drinking water.

If there’s one thing I’m passionate about it’s Life Insurance. One of the reasons for this is because, on average, two to three times per year I have the duty of delivering life claim cheques to the beneficiaries of recently deceased participants of the more than 325 firms that I provide group insurance plans to. This may sound like a rather unpleasant job, but it’s actually quite gratifying to be able to be of some help at such a sorrowful time. I’ve been doing this for more than 25 years and someone made the remark to me a number of years ago: “That I’m the only one who meets with the family with money in hand, whereas all the other key people involved are looking to get paid for their services.”

Besides the passing of the insured person, what I find distressing is the fact that, most of the time the deceased person has little or no other life insurance in place and has not made sufficient provisions to enable their family to continue with their

present lifestyle. Some families are left down-right destitute because the deceased person was the main income earner, they had debt and, like many people, they didn’t have an emergency-fund, living paycheque-to-paycheque. It’s therefore not uncommon for people left in this position to have to sell their home and even file for personal bankruptcy; what a horrid position to be left in!

Having a shortfall of life insurance exists with people from all walks of life and all levels of income and, based on my experiences, there’s a high probability that you may be one of them.

Most benefit plans today provide a minimum amount of life insurance coverage for their employees, which could be $15,000 to $30,000 or in some cases an amount equal to one year’s income. As you know, in today’s world that’s not a lot of money. And when you consider that the cost for final expenses is $12,000 to $15,000 that doesn’t leave surviving family members with much money to face the future with.

Calculating your life insurance requirements involves comparing your debts and other liabilities to your assets. A Life Insurance Broker/Agent will help you make the calculations and explain your options at no cost to you. There are between 40 to 50 leading life insurance companies in Ontario and the differences in premium costs among these companies for the exact same product can be considerable, so I strongly recommend calling a minimum of two Brokers when making inquiries. Also, if you have a spouse, make sure that you’re both fully involved when shopping for your coverage and, lastly, don’t make the mistake of putting it off. We’re all going to bite the biscuit one day; we just don’t know when.
