1 New Style Pupil Reports Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils You will probably be aware that from September 2014 a New National Curriculum has applied in English Primary Schools. You may not be aware that this included a ‘raising of the bar’ in some subjects. Most notably in English, Maths, Science and Computing, some aspects have been moved down a year. For example some work previously set for Year 6 is from September 2014 expected to be achieved in Year 5. Children in Years 2 and 6 were still assessed this year against the old levels via their National Tests (SATS). This is because they have been learning against the old curriculum for up to six years. Parents will receive this information separately. Nevertheless for all other year groups, levels have gone and this will apply to Y2 and Y6 next year. The levels related to the old curriculum not the new. Children in Y2 and Y6 will still be assessed by nationally set assessments, but these will measure that the child is secure in the expectations for a Y2 or Y6 child. Bearing in mind that the new curriculum is more challenging, schools have been charged with a new benchmark. It is expected that 85% of pupils will be secure in their understanding and knowledge at the end of every school year. This is how schools will be judged and it is how schools are to assess their pupils. As a result of this we at Molescroft, along with partners in our Teaching School Alliance, have been developing a system of assessments based on “security” of learning. We have produced a system called FLiC. It stands for Framing Learning in Classrooms. It is proving to be groundbreaking. Teachers have always made assessments every lesson and every day, but now these are recorded with a ‘flic’ on a tablet device. New Style Pupil ReportsDear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils

You will probably be aware that from September 2014 a New National Curriculum has applied in English Primary Schools.

REPORTS INFORMATION CONTINUED ...FRAMING LEARNING IN CLASSROOMSWe have developed a water tight system for ensuring that Assessment really is for Learning. The system is so successful that many schools in the East Riding, Hull and across the country from Bristol to Newcastle and internationally are buying the system for their own schools. We should all be very proud of what the staff at Molescroft Primary School has achieved. My main reason however for informing you today of this is because through FLiC we have developed the most detailed new system of providing Pupil Reports. We shall email home a letter written by the class teacher(s) for each child. It will also have a Curriculum Report. It will demonstrate for every learning aspect; within every subject; how secure your child is in his or her learning and understanding. You will also see a comparison chart for each subject so that you can see how your child compares with the rest of the cohort at Molescroft Primary School. We have also included these for our current Year 2 and Year 6 children so that parents/carers can see how their children perform against the new expectations. I ask parents and carers to be patient and not to panic if a report fails to arrive immediately. This is the first time we have done this and therefore despite our best laid plans, we could encounter one or two teething problems. Reports will be distributed in the week commencing 22nd June 2015. Everyone should have received their report in time for the Exhibition of Work evening on Monday 29th June 2015.

FRIENDS’ SUMMER FUNSPONGES AT THE READY

The “Friends” will be hosting their highly successful and popular Family Fun Evening straight after school on Friday 26th June. There will be lots of attractions between 3.30 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. There will be that ever popular

opportunity for pupils to show their love for members of staff by throwing wet sponges at them in the stocks.

Children must be under the care of an adult at this event, particularly when aiming at Mr. Loncaster :-)

PLEASE LOOK OUT FOR THE APPEALS FOR ITEMS FOR STALLS

Fun in the SunKeep safe this summer

Just a reminder that it is recommended that pupils have a wide brimmed or foreign legion style hat which protects the neck. Pupils are also recommended to have sun cream at school but the following protocol must be observed.

The sun cream must be clearly labelled with the child’s name.

The sun cream must be kept in the box provided in each class – NOT in book bags, coats or pockets.

Each child must be trained at home how to best apply his or her own sun cream. Teachers and supervisors cannot apply sun cream for your child unless there is a medical requirement, this being dealt with through the Administration of Medicines Policy.

We can dream of a sunny summer, can’t we?

R FAREWELL YEAR 6Seven years of memories and achievements. Remember ‘Once a mole, always a mole’

Year 6 will be given a special send off on Friday 17th July. They will be given a special guard of honour by the rest of the school and will leave through the main entrance.

Parent/Carers of Y6, Friends Association committee members and Governors are invited earlier to join Y6 at 10.30 a.m. for a special show which is to be presented by Y6. They will also receive their briefcases.

At 12 noon on this day Y6 and their guests are invited to share a special buffet lunch with the staff, in order to mark the end of the primary days. The cost of this is £2.30 per head. (if parents have paid in advance for their child’s lunch no further payment is required). The cost is £3.30 for adults. Parent/Carers of Y6, members of Friends Association, and Governors are also invited to attend. The

buffet will be based in the Y6 classrooms. Please fill in the slip at the end of the Newsletter.

This will be followed by a whole school final assembly at 1.45 p.m. Again our guests are invited to stay for this annual rite of passage.

Traditionally on the last day, Year 6 like to collect signatures on their school polo shirt. This is fine with me if it is fine with you, BUT the

children MUST provide their own pen for this purpose and have a school jumper or second polo shirt to wear for the final assembly in the afternoon.

SUMMER SEMI FROZEN FRUIT KEBABS

Pupils will be pleased to know that the Fruit

Kebabs continue to be available at morning

breaks until the end of term. Semi-frozen fruit kebabs will be available

from the Friends’ Garden each morning break. They cost 30p each.

Once again thanks go to Mrs. Hunsley, our

extremely flexible cook, for facilitating this.

A CELEBRATION OF THE BRITISH SUMMER SALADA different hot component each dayFrom 30th June to 10th July the stage will be in the hall and all the technical equipment set up for our performances. Rather than try to squeeze in and have to keep packing up and resetting the stage, dinners will move to the Atrium. There will be no room however for guests.

For these lunches we shall be having a celebration of salads. There will be a wide range of options and changes each day. I promise the children this is not a few lettuce leaves and a tomato! There will be a hot element to the meal each day e.g pizza. Watch out for the special menus when they are published. If the weather is pleasant children may also have the chance to dine alfresco in the Friends Garden and/or on the Year 4, Year 5 & Year 6 picnic tables.

EVEN MORE VARIETY THIS YEAR

R EXHIBITION OF WORK EVENINGA CHANCE TO CELEBRATE WHAT OUR CHILDREN ACHIEVE

As announced in the June Newsletter; on Monday 29th June the School will be hosting its annual Exhibition of Work Evening. The whole school will be open and pupils are encouraged to bring their parents to school between 5.30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The children should be your guide and show you their work and classrooms. Teachers are all here for informal discussions. In addition you are encouraged to go and have a look all around the school in other classrooms and to have a look at what everyone else has been doing and certainly to have a look at the classrooms your children are transferring to.

Mrs. Hemphill will be available in the Conservation Area so please do go and have a look at the habitats. Not to be missed are the class garden tubs, each designed by a class this year around the theme of “Tree..mendous Tub Tales”. Which is your favourite?

As before there will be a rolling programme of music

and dance in the hall. We sincerely hopethat Parent/Carers will facilitate their children being in the hall to perform. The choir always delight and their programme as always is a closely guarded secret.

All younger Routines dancers will perform but not the KS2 groups or Urban Dance due to the demands of the Cats rehearsals. I am however delighted to announce that for the first time there will be a performance from our two Zumba Clubs.

The programme:5.40 pm. The Orchestra6.10 pm. Zumba6.30 pm. Y1 Routines 6.40 pm. Y2 Routines 6:50 pm. Y3 Recorders7:00 pm Y4 Recorders7:10 pm Y5 Recorders7:20 pm Y6 Recorders7.30 p.m. The Choir

Please note for everyone’s safety and

comfort a one way system will operate through the hall. In

addition Parent/Carers are encouraged not to

bring prams/pushchairs into the school and

through the corridors. Wherever possible, please use external

routes to the classrooms.

Every room has an external door.

TEAM SPIRIT

Just  like  being  in  a  Football  team,  being  in  an  Orchestra  or  Choir  is  also  being  part  of  a  team.    Please  do  everything    possible  to  ensure  your  children  are  here  to  play  their  part  in  their  team’s  big  match  of  the  year.    It  is  what  they  have  been  training  for.

Thank  you

R MOLES IN THE PARKSincere thanks to you all

I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone for the wonderful spirit and atmosphere, which was so evident on our school field last Friday night.

I am extremely grateful to the Friends’ Association for organising a fabulous event. Mr. Neil Theobald, chair of the Friends has led an excellent organisation of what was without doubt an enormous undertaking. The nearer the event came the more we realised the enormity of the preparations. These preparations including the possibility of a wet night. Thankfully the weather held until the very end, but clearly the preparations would have kept us all dry and entertained if the worst had hit earlier in the night. The Friends Association was out in force again on Saturday as the event was dismantled and cleared. The clearing up was however minimal. The care of all our guests for our grounds was first class. Thank you all.

The event was a big team effort. The Friends committee took on different roles including organising bar, catering, security, attractions and the all important Risk Assessments. Mrs. Jenny Wilson was in charge of ticketing and the management of the complex system, but one, which was designed to price the event to the advantage of our parents and pupils whilst not making a loss. The outgoings for this event were nearly £4000, which was a calculated risk for the Friends’ Association, but you didn’t let us down. 900 people attended the event. Mrs. Diane Trowsdale made all the arrangements for the marquees and the band that we all enjoyed greatly. Mr. Platten, our Caretaker is the lynch pin in all of these arrangements. Without his flexibility and eagerness to work with, for and through our events, they could not

happen. He makes the impossible possible. Every extra show, concert or in this case ‘Moles in the Park’ can only happen because Dave works with us to let it happen. Thank you Dave, thank you all.

So a team effort it certainly was, but the final part of the team came together with such good spirit and humour on Friday night, you our guests. Many of you have commented in various media outlets your enjoyment of the night. The one thing that is shared by most is the relaxed and easy mood of the night. I thought the children were so well behaved and it was a joy to see how we could all relax knowing all was well.

So once again I am indebted to the

extended family of Molescroft Primary School. It was great that so many of our ‘older’ moles came to join us, though I realise I only saw a fraction of our guests.

I sincerely hope you all had a fabulous family time with our family and that it wasn’t a drain on the family purse. I am sure you will all wish to share with me in thanking and congratulating Neil Theobald our Chair for a job very well done.

Slip Slop Slap Seek SlideSUN SAFETY ... SAFETY FOR CHILDREN

Encouraging children to take simple precautions will prevent both short and long term sun damage while allowing them to enjoy their time outside.

• Infants under 12 months should be kept in the shade.

• Cover up children with hats, protective clothing and sunglasses.

• Use a sunscreen with an appropriate SPF factor for each family member based on individual skin type.

• Limit the time spent in the midday sun when the UV index is at its highest.

• Monitor exposure to the sun using a UV monitor.

THE SOLAR INDEXThe UV Index is a scale given to the level of UV radiation on a given day. It ranges from 0 to 20-the higher the index, the higher the potential for damage to the skin and eyes and the less time it takes for this damage to occur.

S Attendance and Holidays

Attendance for the year to July 2014 was 97.8%

Unauthorised absences are rare as parents/carers always inform the school either by letter, phone or in

person of the reason why their child is absent. We are grateful for the support of parents/carers in this matter.

Please note the dates above do not necessarily correspond with those of neighbouring schools

Absences

Parents/carers are required to inform the school office of the reason for absence as soon as possible. This may be in person or by telephone. Failure to do so will result in an unauthorised absence being recorded. In the interest of pupil security, absence should be reported to the school office (by telephone or in person) before school commences each day.

Holidays in term time Head Teachers can no longer sanction holidays in term time. Taking holiday absence will lead to an unauthorised absence.

Fines are imposed by the Local Authority for unauthorised absence. Fines are issued per child, per parent, per accumulated week of absence. The school does not receive any money.
