MESSAGE FROM THE ADVISORY BOARD CHAIR Now that we are enjoying the great outdoor activities such as biking, rambling, golfing, hiking and gardening do you feel that you are experiencing a little bit more stiffness, aches and pains than you did last year? Well your Seniors’ Activity Centre (SAC) might be of some help to you. Did you know that the SAC has partnered with Langara College to provide massages for our seniors? By appointment you

can book a 45-minute for $15 (SAC Members) and $20 (Non-members). Check your Seniors’ Scene under Registered Programs for details. Thanks to revenue from the Cafeteria, fundraising events and events such as Flea Market and PumpkinFest we are able to pay 50% of the cost of much needed equipment and some of the cost of special programs. Our Finance Committee has a subcommittee responsible for fundraising. I encourage anyone who has enjoyed the SAC and would like to make a donation to contact me. Your contribution helps to make the SAC even better! The SAC Advisory Board has five committees. The Committees are Finance, Programs, Outreach, Cafeteria and we have just added a new Communications Committee. Each of these committees is chaired by a member of the SAC Advisory Board. A staff member of the SAC attends the monthly meetings of these committees. At our monthly Advisory Board meetings each committee Chair does a presentation to the Board around what is happening on a daily basis. The combination of staff and volunteers works well. We are always looking for new suggestions and ideas! Please do not hesitate to contact me. Elmer Pellerine Chair

MESSAGE FROM THE COMMUNITY RECREATION MANAGER My favourite part of summer is the sunshine and smiles that blossom like our gardens (which look fantastic by the way!). This spring we had the opportunity to host the Lighthouse Festival and see all the talented young artists' masterpieces displayed in our cabinets, but have you taken a moment

to look at the talents of our members who are displayed each week in our cabinets? Our knitters create the most exquisite hand-crafted sweaters, animals, and decorations. The tiny details are so intricate and beauti ful! Then you look at our quilters who bring seemingly disparate pieces of fabric together that tell a story with delicate hand-sewn quilts that are perfect in every detail. It is truly inspiring to be in our Centre and surrounded by such talented people everywhere!Over our shutdown this fall we are going to be working on a few projects, when you return in September you will be welcomed with a new coffee bar, featuring a redesigned layout and equipment. As well, we are hosting the first ever North Shore Seniors’ Health Expo which will be the kick-off event to a Dementia Friendly North Shore. This amazing event will feature inspiring speakers, innovators and businesses. Join us on September 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for an amazing day!Jill Lawlor Community Recreation Manager

A huge thank you to all the volunteers involved with the training and roll-out of the new registration software, ActiveNet. You are all superstars! There were approximately 80 volunteers trained to use the new software. Everyone was patient and professional. We also had volunteers assisting other volunteers and staff, and we truly could not have done it without your dedication and commitment. You learned all the steps fast and were open to the change, thanks so much. Thanks also to the customers for their patience as everyone, including staff, learned the new software and thanks for remembering to show your card in the Café! We are hoping to have iPads up and operational soon for checking in and out prior to your volunteer shift. This will eliminate the manual logging of hours and give us a much better picture of the countless hours of volunteering that you all do. If you have any questions, please ask Caroline or Jackie.

WHY DO I HEAR BUT NOT UNDERSTAND?Did you know that 47% of adults age 60-79 have hearing loss?1

Your hearing difficulties could be caused by damaged hearing hair cells inside your inner ear (cochlea). When damage occurs in the high-frequency areas of the cochlea, speech may sound garbled and comprehension may become difficult.

A comprehensive hearing assessment will identify the challenges you face and what can be done to help improve both your hearing and your comprehension. It takes less than 60 minutes, you don’t need a referral from your doctor, and there’s no cost or obligation whatsoever.

You peep in and see a group of men with long sticks in their hands looking thoughtfully at a bunch of multi- coloured balls scattered about on a green, baize covered table. Oh, men playing billiards, you think to yourself and carry on.

But step inside and you’ll get an alto-gether different impression. The first thing to catch your eye will be the pristine walnut billiard table which is approximately 130 years old and was kindly donated by a long time member of the centre. The players treat it with reverence and we are indeed

If you are still peering in, your mind may go back to 1961 and that classic movie 'The Hustler' starring the legen dary Jackie Gleason as Minnesota Fats and a young Paul Newman in the title role. Once you’re inside you will realize that our room bears no resemblance to the scruffy, smoked-filled pool room which was the setting for the movie. Instead, our room is bright, cheerful and exudes warmth and friendship. The game that is played 90% of the time

is snooker not pool. Billiards is still played in some places and our room is historically called the Billiards Room but the name of the game is snooker for our players. Both snooker and pool evolved from the game of billiards which goes back to the 15th century. It was played by some very well known people such as: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and Babe Ruth, even Shakespeare made reference to the game in Antony and Cleopatra. “To play or not to play” that is the question!

As you’re in the room you probably have a few questions. The rules are pretty basic; if there is a table avail able and you’ve played snooker before just ask anyone in the room and you’ll be showing off your skills in no time. If the room is busy just put your name on the reserve list which is on the notice board. A nominal charge of $1 for a one

hour playing time is put towards maintaining the tables and generally ensuring the equipment is kept in good order.

At first glance it may look like a men’s club but a few ladies do play and the Snooker Committee would love to increase their number. So, come on ladies and give it a whirl! If you have never played before, bring along a couple of friends and sign up for the Monday morning lessons and you’ll be a player in no time. Who knows, you may soon be organizing a competition against the men. Now that would be worth the price of admission!

Speaking of competitions, the snooker group has regular internal ones and plays a semi-annual game against Burnaby’s Bonsor Centre. A round-robin tournament was held during the Christmas social last year and prizes (donated by the Seniors’

Centre) were awarded to the first and second placed teams. There was a special award of a trophy and a letter from the Mayor to Harry Cohen for his achievement in the Bonsor exchange tournament. Sadly, Harry passed away in April and will be sorely missed by his good friends and fellow snooker players.

Snooker is a challenging game requiring a steady hand and a keen eye. It is also a lot of fun and although 25 to 30 people play on any given day, new players are warmly welcomed. The door is always open!
