Kleinkopje 2018
Photos by: Kokkie Joubert
In April 2018 Sandton Mining (SM) was appointed as the
main sub-contractor by Inayo Mining to carry out all the
work for the topsoil and soft overburden pre-stripping
at Khwezela Colliery’ s Bokgoni section (formerly known
as Kleinkopje Colliery).
Khwezela was created through the merger of Kleinkopje
and Landau at the end of 2016. Khwezela forms part of
Anglo American's South African Coal Estates, which also
includes Greenside. Khwezela is located 12 kilometers
south west of Witbank, in the Mpumalanga Province,
covering the Kromdraai 279 JS, Nooitgedacht 300 JS,
Schoongezicht 308 JS, Elandsfontein 309 JS, Blaau-
wkrans 323 JS and Kleinkopje 15 IS farms.
The merger was necessitated by the fact that both sites
were approaching the end of their operational lives,
with one pit expected to close at Kleinkopje in early
2017, and a further two at Landau the following year.
This meant that it became
economically unviable for
the two operations to con-
tinue as separate entities,
each with their own over-
heads and individual sup-
port structures.
Active reserves will com-
fortably take Khwezela to
2024, while further re-
sources offer the potential
for 30 years of coal extraction. Another significant ad-
vantage is that local communities will continue to bene-
fit from the mine, corporate social investment and local
economic development programmes. Bokgoni is an
opencast mine where draglines are used to mine coal
for both the domestic and export markets.
Khwezela is the Nguni word for the rekindling of fire to
release new energy, to inject fresh life and bring
warmth. It also represents what binds a family as they
face the future together.
SM is responsible for the clearing (stripping) of the
overlaying topsoil and soft overburden layers to expose
the hard overburden (hards/rock) which cover the coal
seam/s.
Drill rigs are then used to penetrate the rock layer
where after the drilled holes are charged with explo-
sives to blast/fragment the rock into manageable sizes
for the dragline to remove and expose the coal seam.
The equipment on site is a reflection of the Clients’ pro-
duction requirement and may vary from time to time. It
should be noted not achieving monthly targets has dire
operational and financial consequences as the whole
mining sequence is disrupted and coal extraction tar-
gets cannot met be which
results in fines and/or pen-
alties being imposed.

Q: How long have you been working for Sandton Mining?
A: 7 years.
Q: What ‘’highs’’ and ‘’lows’’ do you experience day-to-day on site?

A: To achieve our monthly target and to run the site safely and to the satisfaction of

“Tinley to Ballito” - Charity Swim
After months planning, an enthusiastic group of six swimmers took to the water on Saturday the 19th of May in order to raise funds for their local community situated in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal.
With the help of a number of sponsors, including Sandton Mining (Pty) Ltd the group managed to raise over R50 000.00 for
local charities such as Thuthukani Special School, the SPCA and Kobus van Wyk, a local pharmacist who recently became
paralyzed in a motor cycle accident.
The initial plan was to swim from Tinley Manor to Ballito, however due to high volumes of rain experienced in the week
leading up to the swim the Tinley area proved un-swimmable. For safety reasons the group, under guidance from the Spe-
cialised Rescue Unit team, were advised to swim from Ballito to Salt Rock and back again.
The six swimmers set off at approximately 07h25 in staggered groups of two, accompanied by the Specialised Rescue Unit
crew and 7 paddlers. Throughout the swim two small hammerhead sharks and a 25kg grey shark were spotted, fortunately
Ocean Guardian from Australia generously lent the team six shark shields for the event.
Five of the six swimmers completed the swim successfully, with the last swimmer coming in at the 4 hours 20 minutes mark.
The team has been overwhelmed by the response and support and would like to extend a sincere thanks to all involved.
Meet the team from left to right: Clinton Woodley (paddler), Drew

Meet ‘’Molly’’
It is with great sadness that we will be bid Molly Breton farewell as she retires in September
2018, Molly has been Sandton Plant Hire’s Barloworld Sales Consultant and ‘’go to girl’’
when it comes to CAT machines since January 2007. She has known Peter Fourie since 1982
when she started at Barloworld’s reception and has worked closely with him and many of
our other managers for the past 11 years.
In order to pay tribute to her, Rob Bester had ‘’Molly’’ stickers made and placed them on
one of the new D10T machines at Somkhele which can be seen in the photos below. Molly
was obviously oblivious to all that was going on until she received photos from Rob, she had
the following to say: ‘’The day I received the images from Rob, I thought what now!! What’s
gone wrong oh my goodness? Of course when I opened and saw my name on the D10T I just
started laughing, I got hold of Rob eventually and asked if Peter knew? It is such a flattering
gesture, I sent it on to our executives, wow! Peter even gave permission to post it on social
media.’’
We asked Molly to share some memorable moments from over the years:
‘’I have quite a number of stories, and could write a book but that would take too long, so just a few highlights, in July 2011 I
was away at Mabula Lodge when I received a call from Peter asking how many 725’s we had in stock. I sold him eight of
them that day, through this sale I won a trip to Zanzibar, he refused an offer to join me. After many more successful sales to
Sandton Plant Hire in 2014 I won a Mediterranean cruise with Caterpillar.
In 2017 I was the runner up sales person of the year, predominantly thanks to Sandton Plant Hire. I have come to know you
guys and have longstanding relationships with most of the staff, and this has been a great privilege for me, to have worked
so closely with Sandton Plant staff is like being part of a great family.’’
We at Sandton wish Molly all the best in her future endeavours and trust that she will enjoy some hard earned rest and re-
laxation.

Freedom Day 2018
Freedom Day is a South African national day celebrated on the 27th of April each year. This day commem-
orates the day in 1994 when the first democratic election was held in South Africa.
This election resulted in a change in government as the African National Congress
(ANC) came into power.
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that re-
spects and enhances the freedom of others.” Nelson Mandela
Youth Day 2018
Youth Day is a national day of remembrance which takes place on the 16th of June each year in South Af-
rica. This day serves to recognise all of the students and young citizens who took part in the Soweto Upris-
ing Protests in 1976. Students from the suburb situated in Gauteng marched to protest against the une-
qual standard of education for children of different racial groups. The sadness of this day will never be
forgotten, however Youth Day is an opportunity to celebrate the bright young minds of the future.
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Nelson Mandela
International Workers Day 2018
Workers Day is a national public holiday in South Africa which takes place on the 1st of May each year, the
purpose of this day is to pay tribute to the working class of the nation and to emphasise the need to es-
tablish fair labour practices and employment standards. Following the first democratic elections in 1994
this date was inaugurated as an official national public holiday and is celebrated across 80 countries.
“A skilled worker, regardless of the job description, remains a treasure.”
Public Holidays
The purpose of this section is to recap over the national days celebrated in the previous quarter of the
year. Each national day celebrated in South Africa holds history and purpose, the celebration of these
milestones each year are a reminder to reflect on how much South Africa has grown and an opportunity to
seek out areas which require improvement in order for our beautiful country to reach its full potential.
