Few people would question that we live in a challenging hour. The world may actually revolve as usual; however, for most of us time seems to fly and days grow shorter. We have all the modern conveniences plus new innovative technology such as no other generation ever imagined. Yet the average person claims fewer victories and accomplishments; struggles with a lack of self confidence; battles increasing bouts of depression along with serious attacks of anxiety; spends unprecedented amounts of money on pharmaceuticals; and walks alone in the midst of a crowd.

The above describes the world and the ungodly, right?

Yes – and NO!

The symptoms fit the church and regrettably invades if not dominates the homes of men and women chosen by God and credentialed with our Fellowship.

I regret using this format for lecture. However, I offer no apology. My heart aches as I observe my surroundings. I love my church family and spend restless hours in intercession. Please heed my plea and give attention to my admonition:

A minister’s “job” never ends! The to-do list continues, expands, and explodes!

Those who are motivated by good deeds, who seek to excel, and who focus on serving remain in constant demand! Some may call it job security – I call it disaster ahead! Rather than concentrate on the negative (that will come at an appropriate time), choose to adopt the following:

Take time for God and His Word. Begin each day by making this a priority. For those who say that morning already comes too soon – set the alarm and get out of bed thirty minutes earlier. You can (and will) do what you want to do! Life and death depend on your resolve. Thirty minutes will keep the devil away!

Far too many connect this ritual with sermon preparation. Yes, sermonizing mandates Biblical research and time spent in solitude with the Author. However, preachers must invest in principles of discipleship before polishing sermon material with eloquence. What Bible reading program dominates your daily schedule? One never needs to fear a “habit” that requires devotional reading and meditation. Communication techniques may tickle the ears of the multitude but a prophetic voice void of fresh manna from heaven will reproduce spiritual pigmies in the pew.

Remember the importance of family. The “professional life” will stifle a marriage and turn children into orphans. The Pentecostal leader marches to a unique drum. Don’t use this admonition as an “excuse” to neglect the church whom God has assigned to your care – but practice balance. Only the Spirit provides discernment but Abraham was the sacrifice not Isaac. I understand the account and fully realize that God provided a ram, but the animal only confirmed Abraham’s sacrifice.

Preacher, God finds no pleasure in our “sacrifice” of our companion or our children! Our “sacrifice” releases His Lamb to take “our” place on the altar. Love your companion even as Christ loved the church and provide significance for your chil-dren as they are God’s gift and our inheritance.

May God add His anointing as you receive these words. I love you!

We have all heard it said that there is no such thing as a

stupid question. While in some respects that may well be

true, it is also true that there IS such a thing as a bad question.

Bad questions are poorly timed, inadequately communicated,

and are often a catalyst in turning a good situation bad or a

bad situation worse. In leadership one of the best skills we

can develop is the ability to ask good questions.

Being part of a ministry team can be challenging. In a perfect

world, insecurities would be checked at the door, and an

environment of trust and mutual respect would rule the day.

In the real world, misunderstanding and miscommunication

can wreak all sorts of havoc on a ministry team. It is

unfortunate, but often the way in which we go about

asking questions of our team members does more damage

than good. Asking the right question in the wrong way is

simply not helpful.

Having asked my share of bad and unhelpful questions

through the years has forced me to evaluate this issue in my

own life. What I have discovered has been extremely

helpful to me personally. Below are a few things I try to

evaluate before I ask questions.

1. Will this question help bring clarity, or will it simply create

more uncertainty? We all need clarity to perform the

functions of our respective jobs well. Sometimes the only

way to gain the needed clarity is to ask questions. However,

there are times when we have all the clarity we need; we just

don’t like what the information is telling us. In those instanc-

es, questions can be used in a negative manner to muddy the

water and create uncertainty for all involved. Ask questions

to bring clarity, not uncertainty.

2. Am I framing this question in an accusing light? If you do

not believe the best in team members, then you are probably

on the wrong team. Asking questions in an accusing manner

– always assuming the worst – is a good way to put people on

the defense and send relationships south. Asking hard

questions is good, and at times necessary, but ask assuming

the best in people, not the worst.

3. Whose best interest do I have in mind; mine, the leaders, or

the organizations? Most people can take difficult questions

if they know you have their best interest at heart. Self-eval-

uation in this respect is vital. Do your best to communicate

loyalty to those around you and to the vision of the ministry.

This will pave the way to a more welcomed reception of your

difficult questions.

4. Am I trying to make myself look smart and someone else

look dumb? There are times you will not agree with other

members of your team. There are times you will be convinced

that you are absolutely right and they are absolutely wrong.

Asking questions can be a great way to help others see what

you see. The danger in this approach is the tendency to ask

questions in a sarcastic way to make ourselves look smarter

and those in disagreement look – well – dumb. In

situations like this, show proper respect to those with which

you disagree.

5. Do I really need to know the answer, or am I just being

nosey? We all know people who like to hoard information.

For these people, information is power. The dispensing of

information is used to control and manipulate those around

them. This is clearly wrong, and evidence of a severe need of

counseling. However, there are times when information is not

dispensed because it is quite frankly, none of our business.

When asking questions that relate to sensitive information,

be clear how it has an impact on you. Do you really need to

know the information, or are you just being nosey.

Good questions can help a team move forward. They can

provide clarity and help shape vision. As team members,

do your part and do the work necessary to always ask better

questions; questions that help move things forward.

Ask Better Questions Get Better Answers

Mid-Year Traffic Report

Endeavoring to keep everyone abreast of what’s happening among our missionaries I submit this Mid-Year-Traffic Report. Our district has seen a lot of activity relative to missionaries itinerating since the first of the year. In spite of some great challenges God is still in charge and some great victories have been won. The itineration struggles affect both the missionary and the local church. As we view the bigger picture together may we all seek to bless each other along the road of modern missions. And now for the promised traffic report in chrono-logical order:

Gone or Going

Gary & Shirley Bohanon, missionaries to Rwanda, Africa, left last winter to begin their full-time ministry there. Gary and Shirley raised their budget in only three-four months thanks to their many ministerial friends and the generosity of Crossroads Church. They returned stateside this summer to go through Missionary Training and Missionary Renewal under the auspices of Assemblies of God World Missions. The Bohanons will shortly return to Africa.

Doyle & Lisa Brummett, missionaries to Spain, left for their next mission assignment this past March. Doyle and Lisa spent most of this term working with Global University under AGWM. At the first of the year they were asked to return to Spain and grow the International Church in Madrid, as well as giving training to the nationals. The Brummetts will return to the states next year for their year of itineration.

Trent & Tina Morrow, missionaries to Uruguay, recently left for their next term of children’s ministry and training in South America.

Stephen Kuert, missionary to East Africa, will be leaving for a four year term in about a month. Thankfully, his budget is intact as he prepares to leave the states.

Grady & Janet Smalling, newly assigned to International Min-istries, are wrapping up their fund raising so they can devote their entire ministry to human trafficking.

Ted & Carolyn Heaston, AGWM missionaries assigned to Global University, will itinerate into early fall then assume their duties as Global University leaders among overseas constituents.

Still in the Traffic

Jason & Roberta Roberts, missionaries to Mexico, have been extended into fall. Jason and Roberta lack over a thousand dol-lars in monthly support. Please help this young family get back to Southern Mexico.

Fari Rider, missionary to Taiwan, did not come home until last November and is scheduled to return to her place of ministry in Taiwan toward year’s end.

Amanda Tyler, candidate missionary to Southern Asia, still lacks approximately 25% of her assigned monthly budget. She should be leaving for her World Missions assignment this fall.

Blake & Katy Edgmon, candidate missionaries to Ireland, continue to make progress and want to leave for their overseas assignment in January 2012.

The recently approved candidates find themselves in the thick of missions activity this summer, Daniel Hazelrigg, Terence & Laurel Harris, and Angela Tiffany all were commissioned by AGWM at the conclusion of Missionary Training and Missionary Renewal along with the fall candidates – Gary and Shirley Boha-non, and Blake and Katy Edgmon.

Merging Into Traffic

Steven & Kristen McKnight, missionaries to Northern Asia, returned to Oklahoma in May and will begin itineration ministry this summer.

Shawn & Dawn Lee, missionaries to Northern Asia, are now stateside having just arrived this month. Their itineration will take them through the next 12 months.

Bill & Barbara Kuert, missionaries to Kenya, East Africa, will arrive in Oklahoma the first week of November. They will return to Africa the first of July, 2012.

U.S. Missionaries

Destry & Cynthia Dobbs, Chi Alpha campus pastors at Okla-homa State University, are raising support through the balance of this year for their ministry at O-State.

Ed & Janice Sullivan, missionaries to the Native Americans, continue to work through the Oklahoma District. They lead the Native American School of Ministry headquartered in Wright City. Also, the Sullivans have taken on the project of building a parsonage for the Chihowa I Chuka Indian Assembly of God. Ed and Janice are itinerating this year for the parsonage project and the ministry needs of training Natives.
