PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our mission as the Body of Christ in the parish of St. Jean Vianney is to model the love of Jesus by discerning and doing God’s will, consciously Sharing the Word and Eucharist at worship, educating in faith all ages, evangelizing our parishioners for Christ’s mission, and serving justly God’s people, our sisters and brothers within our parish boundaries, our larger Baton Rouge community, and into the world.

LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, Beginning this weekend in the Lagniappe Bulletin you will find articles on Ministry Stewardship. Along with prayer and finance. Ministry makes up the three pillars of Catholic life at St. Jean Vianney Parish. Later in August you will be asked to be generous in ministry as a Christian Catholic in some manner. Thanks to those who have helped us with the annual House-in-a-Box drive. The families who will benefit thank you so much. This Wednesday evening, at 6:30pm in the Library, Mr. Bernard DuMond will give the results of the Feasibility study regarding the Parish Master Plan project. Mr. DuMond represents the Institute of School and Parish Development who have partnered with us during these past months to work on this project and to determine if our parish can conduct a capital campaign. You are invited to attend Mr. DuMond’s reporting meeting. I am looking forward to hearing the results. This Friday the 22nd, at 9:00am under Christ Court at the Catholic Life Center, the diocesan 50th Anniversary Time Capsule will be blessed and sealed. Our Parish and Schools contributed to the Time Capsule with information about our founding and significant events. The prayer service is open to all so I encourage you to consider attending. There is a Blood Drive next weekend on Sunday the 24th. If you have signed up on ministry stewardship to give blood, please fulfill your commitment. All are encouraged who can to give blood next Sunday. This helps our parishioners access blood when in need through the Blood Bank. Looking ahead, on the weekend of August 6-7 we will welcome Fr. Joy from Kerala, India who will speak on behalf of the Diocese of Kerala as part of the diocesan cooperative missionary plan. Please be generous in welcoming Fr. Joy that weekend and in your financial support of his diocese. I am leaving this coming Sunday, July 24th on vacation. I will be in Rochester, NY and in Florida. I will pray for you daily and ask the same. Thank you for being so faithful to me and to the parish. Love,

BAPTISMS We welcome the following children to our parish family through the Sacrament of Baptism:

Now that we have gone over some key concepts about what is remaining the same in the liturgy, it is important to begin a reflection about what really is changing and

why that change is necessary and even helpful. We have been talking about a document called the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, which was a result of the Second Vatican Council convened in 1963 by Pope John the 23rd. This document along with the decision by Pope Paul the 6th [who followed Pope John the 23rd] gave us the use of the “vernacular” in the liturgy and sacraments. The vernacular is the mother tongue of a given place. Being able to speak the language of the people during Mass proved to be a great advantage in helping people express and learn their faith. In 1965, Pope Paul VI said that using the mother tongue in the celebration of the liturgy and sacra-ments helps each one of us to fully unite ourselves more closely to the Church’s prayer, and allows us to cross over from simple spectators to active participants. As such, in our country, what had been done up to this point entirely in Latin could now be done in English. This required a translation from Latin to English of all prayers and words associated with the liturgy. This year, we are getting ready to welcome a new translation of some of that same Latin that was translated in the first attempt in 1965 and following. What has changed is not the Latin, but the way in which Church understands translation from Latin into other languages. The new translation, which is just that…a new translation of the same Latin, is a nuanced and more faithful translation so that our expression of our Catholic faith is also more seamless. Remember, the Mass isn’t changing, just a few words that are being changed in order that we can better understand what our faith is telling us about liturgy and about our lives.
