Hallam Primary School’s learning and teaching programs support and promote the principles and practice of Australian democ-racy, including a commitment to elected government, the rule of law, equal rights for all before the law, freedom of religion,
freedom of speech and association and the values of openness and tolerance. Hallam Primary School has a zero tolerance approach to child abuse.
W akakirri Award Winners
I had the pleasure of attending the
Wakakirri Awards Night at the Palais
Theatre, St Kilda, last night. The Hallam PS Waka-
kirri Team was performing as part of the Victorian
Regional Awards Night, following on from their pre-
vious performance and awards at the Frankston
Arts Centre in August. Hallam PS was one of several
school groups to perform across three subdivisions
of the Wakakirri Awards Night, and the talent of all
the groups was a credit to each school.
Under the creative leadership of Mrs Amanda Con-der, and supported by a team of teacher assistants, the Hallam PS Wakakirri Team (stage and back-stage) performed their Story Dance item ‘Never Give Up!’. They were well supported by a 50-strong contingent of Hallam PS supporters in the audience, too. Thank you to everyone who made the time to attend and support our students, teachers and school. Most excitingly, Hallam PS was one of the division-
al award winners. Watch this space…
M ini-fete
Tomorrow is our mini-fete. The mini-
fete is really an applied maths activity
where students get to manage money at a stall op-
erated by their class, with the assistance of their
teachers. Students sell, buy, give change and
demonstrate responsibility around money manage-
ment...as well as having a fun afternoon between 1-
3:00pm. We hope that parents will come along to
support this learning opportunity and join in the
fun.
A reminder that all students are required to assist
in packing up with their class after 3:00pm and will
be dismissed at 3:30pm, as usual.
E nd Term 3 Arrangements Term 3 concludes on Friday 21 September and students will be dismissed at 2:30pm.
Please ensure that you have arrangements in place for the earlier collection of your child from school. A reminder has been put up on our school sign. Term 3 has been another busy one and everyone, students and teachers, will enjoy the break, and hopefully the warmer weather of September-October. I hope you all have a relaxing and safe hol-iday.
D aylight Saving-7 October 2018
Just a quick reminder that Daylight Saving time begins at 2:00 am on Sunday 7 Octo-
ber...your clock needs to spring forward an hour so you can be on time for the first day of Term 4 on Monday 8 October.
I look forward to seeing you all back at Hallam PS after the break, ready for another busy term.

We will be participating in WALK TO SCHOOL month at the start of Term 4. The weather will be milder, and the perfect opportunity to increase fitness/the wellbeing of all our youngsters, reduce traffic con-gestion, etc.... Walking part of the way is OK.... JEANS FOR GENES DAY— We raised $370 for this very worthy cause.... Well done HPS. ATTENDANCE—Staff are carefully monitoring Student Attendance and we politely remind parents to explain any absence from school by: Ringing the school on the day of absence Providing a note of explanation on the day of return to school Handing the teacher a medical certificate if appropriate Responding to the SMS alerts sent out each day if your child is not at school
Is it Bullying? When someone says or does
something unintentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s rude.
When someone says or does
something intentionally hurt-ful and they do it once, that’s mean.
When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful
and they keep doing it even when you tell them to stop or
show them you’re upset – that’s bullying. TELL AN ADULT… At school, that is your teacher.
SCIENCE WEEK AT HALLAM In Week 7, the 27
th-31
st of August, we celebrated Science
Week at Hallam PS by completing a variety of activities around the school, both in class and during lunchtime. Sci-ence Week is an annual celebration that aims to encourage an interest in Science and a curiosity about the world we live in. The first Science Week was in 1997 and since then, over 1000 events, festivals, programs and activities run all around Australia every year. Everyone can celebrate Science Week and get involved. This year, the Year 5/6’s enjoyed a life-size game of ‘Kerplunk’. There were some super strate-
gies involved and lots of fun was had! During their allocated Sci-ence lessons, the Year 3/4s at-tempted to make salt crystals. Un-fortunately, after a week, the salt crystals never formed. We did some brainstorming to use our in-quiring minds to investigate why they did not work. It was conclud-ed that hot water should have been used instead of cold wa-ter, and that the cups should have been put in the sun. The Year 1/2s explored gravity by making their very own hoop gliders and seeing how far they could be thrown. The Preps have been exploring materials and attempted to make unsink-able boats. Upon testing the boats, there was water every-where and some disappointment. However, with the help of tinfoil and courage, all boats were able to stay afloat for at least 10 seconds.
Two lunchtime activities were held. On Monday, Prep and Year 1/2 students participated in a paper plane com-petition. Each student was given a scrap piece of paper to build the best and fastest paper aeroplane they could. There were lots of different models and types being built. In groups of four, students then raced to see which place
would fly all the way to victory. On Wednesday, the Year 3/4s made what I like to call a ‘floating ball toy’. Using a straw, a round piece of paper, a piece of foil and sticky tape, students constructed a toy in which the aim was to keep the small foil ball up in the air by blowing air through your straw. After you got the hang of it, it was super easy! Thank you to all the students and teachers who participat-ed in Science Week this year at Hallam Primary School. Cassie Varga Science Teacher
Walk to School month is a fun and easy way for Victorian primary school kids to build healthy habits for life. Walk to School 2018 runs from the 8th of October through to 2nd November, Term 4. At Hallam Primary School we encourage students to safely walk, ride or scoot to school during this period. Students who participate will be able to complete their daily walk, ride or scoot on their class calendar, receive stickers, a certificate at the end of the month and more! Please refer to the Parent and Carer fact sheet, which will be sent home before end of term, for more information and tips for getting your child involved in Walk to School month (even if you normally drive to school).
Let’s work together to build healthy habits!

On Tuesday 4th of September 8 students from
Years 4 and 5 were selected to represent Hallam Primary School in the Casey District Maths Problem Solving Day held at Maramba Primary School. Hallam entered two teams to compete. There were 24 teams altogether. Hallam Team 1 placed 5th and Hallam Team 2 placed 18
th. There were many challenging maths
problems that the students had to solve, a win-ning favourite being the strategy game, ‘Reverso’. All students should be congratulated for their persistence to achieve excellent results.
