Crucial moment for James and Millie.

📽 Film: Millie and James (pre-iCARER)

Crucial moments in communication happen when the well-being of everyone is under threat.

4 Principle Messages underpinning iCARER therapeutic interaction

1.The person can’t help what is happening to them. They are going through a trauma and are desperately trying to make sense of it all (Miesen, 2004).

2.It is the sense of being understood that is therapeutic; not the content of what is understood (Carl Rogers, 1995).

3.Individuals experiencing dementia have a unique language. The responsibility for learning this language is with the person without dementia (Pitkin, 2016).

4.A person with dementia needs familiarity to feel in control and stay included. What they need most is empathy.

iCARER - 4 Principle Messages

i - the empathetic helper, me, you, professional helpers, family carers, supermarket checkout person, post office clerk, paramedics, local cafe.
