NICK FRADIANI I NTERVIEW : A MERICAN I DOL W INNER NICK FRADIANI With an appearance fronting his

band on America’s Got Talent back in 2014, Connecticut’s own singer song - writer Nick Fradiani made his first big appearance on the small screen. While the band was eventually elimi - nated, that experience inspired Nick to try out for the granddaddy of tele - vision singing competitions, American Idol . Nick was able to gain a chance to compete and in the end, he was crowned the Season 14 American Idol winner. Three years later Nick Fra - diani is still doing what he loves, sing - ing and writing songs.

“ American Idol was honestly a very fun experience,” Nick continues. “You go from playing little clubs to working with all of these incredible musicians.”

While some might think that win - ning American Idol is the golden ticket to superstardom, the truth of the matter is that is when the real work actually begins.

“There’ve been some really suc - cessful ‘American Idols,’ some were relatively successful and a few had a really rough time,” Nick admits. “At the end of the day it is a tremendous platform and you just have to work really hard and do your best to run with it, which is what I’m trying to do.”

“After winning American Idol I

released a single called ‘Beautiful Life’ which was written by singer Chris Car - rabba of Dashboard Confessional. I released a record called Hurricane in August of 2016 and my most recent EP Where We Left Off came out in October of last year. I’m now releas - ing an alternative version of a song

called ‘Scared’ from the EP, which comes out in May. I’m also working on new material now and we’ll do it all again.”

The Connecticut native also has an arena show at a venue he’s very familiar with, the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. On May 5th,

Nick will support recent inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Bon Jovi.

“I’m looking forward to that,” says Nick as he smiles. “Great build - ing, not a bad seat anywhere. I have played Mohegan Sun a few times. Our band won a contest to open for Styx and REO Speedwagon. I did the Christmas show with One Republic and I did one headline set at the arena in 2015 as part of the American Idol arena tour. The Bon Jovi show is sold out I think, but you can get tick - ets off Stubhub or whatever.”

On June 9th, Nick is performing at the Four Corners Music Festival in Hopewell Junction, NY at a charity fundraiser to raise funds and aware - ness for pediatric cancer and the Ty Louis Campbell Foundation.

“It’s a great cause, fighting pedi - atric cancer. It’s horrible and anything involving kids and kids getting sick is just brutal. My mother lost her brother to cancer when he was like seven years old. So my family has always been involved with St. Jude and foundations like that. When this came up, I definitely wanted to be involved. It’s going to be a great night of music.”

ARLO GUTHRIE ARLO GUTHRIE C OMES TO T ARRYTOWN M USIC H ALL The Tarrytown Music Hall, in

association with Music Without Borders, will be presenting Arlo Guthrie, on Sunday, May 13th at 8pm. Tickets are $48-$68 and can be purchased online at www.tar - rytownmusichall.org or 1-877-840- 0457.

Born in Coney Island, New York in 1947, Arlo is the eldest son of Marjorie Mazia Guthrie — a pro - fessional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington’s Disease — and Amer - ica’s beloved singer / writer / phi - losopher / artist Woody Guthrie. Arlo has become an iconic figure in folk music with a distinguished and varied career spanning almost sixty years.

Growing up Guthrie, Arlo was surrounded by such renowned art - ists as Pete Seeger, Lee Hays, Ron - nie Gilbert, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, to name only a few. Not surpris - ingly, Arlo drew from these influ - ences and he in turn became a delineative artist bridging genera - tions of folk. He and Pete Seeger created a legendary collaboration that was sustained for over forty years. The last Pete & Arlo show was in November 30, 2013 at Car -

negie Hall, only a few months before Pete passed away at the age of 94.

In 1965, a teenaged Guthrie per - formed a “friendly gesture” that proved to be fateful. Arlo was arrested for littering, leading him to be deemed “not moral enough to join the army.” Guthrie attained international attention at age 19 by recounting the true events on the album Alice’s Restaurant in 1967. The Alice’s Restaurant Mas - sacre has become an anti-establish - ment anthem and an essential part of the Thanksgiving holiday sea - son, still broadcast widely on ter -

restrial, internet and satellite radio. Alice’s Restaurant achieved plati - num status and was made into a

movie in 1969, in which Arlo played himself, by the esteemed director Arthur Penn. 1969 also brought Arlo to the rock festival of the ages — Wood - stock. His appear - ance showcased Arlo’s hit “Coming into Los Angeles,” which was included on the multi-plati - num Woodstock: Music from The Original Soundtrack and More (1970).

In 1983, after more than 15 years with Warner Records, Arlo left the “music industry” to become a truly independent artist, and established Rising Son Records (RSR), one of the first indie labels in existence. RSR is still in active operation serv - ing as his recording and production company. To date RSR has released over twenty titles, both all new material and re-mastered versions of his classic records, including the Grammy nominated Woody’s 20 Grow Big Songs (1991) featuring

Arlo, his brother, Joady and sister, Nora. In Times Like These (2007), was recorded with the University of Kentucky Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Arlo’s friend and musical director for symphony shows, John Nardolillo. Arlo’s most recent release, Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary (2016) is a 2 CD- set that captured the magic of his historic, commemorative tour, recorded live at The Colonial Thea - tre in Pittsfield, MA. This perform - ance was also filmed by Jim Brown and continues to air on PBS sta - tions across the country.

In 1991, inspired by his parents’ activism, Arlo bought the old Trin - ity Church (“the” church) that is now home to The Guthrie Center, named for his parents, Woody & Marjorie Guthrie. The Guthrie Cen - ter is a not-for-profit interfaith church foundation dedicated to providing a wide range of local and international services.

But mostly Arlo remains a road warrior, touring almost constantly, alone or with friends and family.

and Ethan Isaac of Factory Underground. Access to judges, and prizes including the opportunity to plan on The Music Hall stage, are the foundation from which Rock The Hall will grow.

The Music Hall believes that the arts offer vibrancy and creativity, which is essential for a thriving community. Now, more than ever, sup - port of the arts is vital. The arts have the power to bring people together from all different backgrounds and unite us. Continually finding common ground and celebrating what binds us together is fundamental to a strong com - munity. Rock The Hall is just one of the many ways The Music Hall seeks to support and enrich our community of artists and music fans. Proceeds from Rock The Hall will go to support The Tarrytown Music Hall, a nonprofit theater serving Westchester and the Tri-State area.

The Tarrytown Music Hall will be hosting Rock The Hall, a talent competition and show - case that will cumulate in a final play-off per - formance on September 8th. The deadline for applications is July 15, 2018. The Music Hall is encouraging local musicians of all levels to throw their hat into the competition.

“There is a wealth of talent in our com - munity,” says The Music Hall’s Executive Direc - tor Björn Olsson, “many of our patrons are also musicians; we’re thrilled to tap into the resources of The Music Hall and offer finalists a chance to play on this great, historic stage.”

Rock The Hall was inspired by Webster Bank who have entered their third year of sup - porting The Music Hall through a sponsorship program. “We saw an opportunity to engage local musicians; it is a logical extension to an already fruitful partnership” says Webster Bank President and Chief Executive Officer John R. Ciulla.

Support from Mark Franzoso, of Franzoso Contracting, has also helped to launch Rock The Hall. Mark’s passion for music and support - ing the community has been invaluable.

Rock The Hall has an exciting line-up of judges including producer and audio engineer Rob Fraboni (Bob Dylan, The Band, Eric Clap - ton, The Rolling Stones, Tim Hardin, The Beach Boys, Joe Cocker, and Bonnie Raitt); Grammy- winning producer, musician, writer, recording engineer and owner of Shelter Island Sound Recording Steve Addabbo; Scott Seltzer, Music Without Borders concert booking and market - ing consultant; Coach, DJ on 107.1 The Peak;

Now is your chance to expe - rience this remarkable group in an intimate venue and hear hits like “Here I Am”, “Even the Nights are Better”, “Two Less Lonely People in the World” and so many more at The Ridgefield Playhouse on Friday, May 11th at 8pm, part of the Pepsi Rock Series Powered by Xfinity and sponsored by Comfort King Energy Services. For tickets ($ 110 orchestra, $90 mezzanine/ balcony or $1 79 Gold Circle Meet &

Greet: Tickets in the first seven rows, invitation to soundcheck, photo opportunities with Air Sup - ply, swag bag and more!) Media partner for this event is WEBE 108, CTs Best Music Variety.

Legendary star-maker Clive Davis signed Air Supply to Arista Records in 1980 after hearing the trademark sound of “Lost in Love.” It became the fastest selling single

in the world, leaping to the top of all of the charts. Their second single “All Out of Love,” climbed even faster and higher. Seven top-five singles later, Air Supply (at that time) had equaled The Beatles’ run

of consecutive top five singles.

Graham Russell & Rus - sell Hitchcock met in 1975, the first day of rehearsals for Jesus Christ Superstar in Sydney, Aus - tralia They became instant friends with their common love for The Beatles and, of course, singing. After the shows’ performances they would play pizza parlors, coffee bars and night - clubs with just one guitar and two voices. They

quickly gained a reputation for great harmonies and for original songs that Graham was constantly writing. They made a demo on a cassette of two songs and took it to

every record company in Sydney. Everyone turned it down but one — CBS Records — who admired their unique style. They made a sin - gle in one afternoon and it shot to number one on the national charts. Air Supply was born! That same year, they opened for Rod Stewart across Australia and then through - out the U.S. and Canada playing all of the famous venues before Rod would take the stage. They found new fans, but did not break the U.S. market until Clive Davis of Arista Records heard “Lost in Love” and immediately signed them. From then on, Air Supply became a mainstay on popular radio for more than a decade, achieving multi-mil - lion plays for each of their hit songs and album sales of over 20 million. LAGOND DYLAN BUCKSER-SCHULZ LAGOND S TUDENT DYLAN BUCKSER-SCHULZ WINS D OWN B EAT A WARD Lagond Music School is has

proudly announced that one of their students, Dylan Buckser-Schulz of Scarsdale, is a winner of the 41st Annual DownBeat Student Music Awards.

“Wow! What an honor to have Lagond Music student Dylan Buckser- Schulz win the DownBeat 41st Annual Student Music Award for Outstanding Performance, Junior High School Jazz Soloist,” says Charlie Lagond, co-founder and musical director of Lagond Music School. “We’re very proud of his talent and especially his effort. Special thanks to his drum teacher, Jerad Lippi and the rest of our teachers. Extra special thanks to his parents, Lisa and Chris, for their trust and support.”

As part of the DownBeat Student Music Awards competition, students record their music and submit it for judging by professional musicians and educators from across the coun - try. Judging criteria are based on musicianship, creativity, improvi - sation, technique, sound quality and balance, excitement and authority. This is the fourth time that a Lagond Music student has receive such an honor.

“I’ve never won an award before. This feels pretty overwhelming. But good, all the same,” says Dylan Buck -

ser-Schulz, who started his drum studies at Lagond when he was six.

“For starters, I’d like to thank my drum sticks for getting me through this whole process. Seriously, though,

jazz music is something that I love and appreciate with a passion, and being recognized for my abilities in the art is something I will never take for granted.”

A 7th grader at Edgemont Jr./Sr. High School, he and his twin brother, keyboardist and vocalist Tyler Buck - ser-Schulz, got their start in Lagond’s Band Prep Jam for elementary and middle-school students, prior to join -

ing Lagond’s SRO band. Established in 1976, the Down -

Beat Student Music Awards are con - sidered the most prestigious awards in jazz education. Hundreds of musi -

cians, music educators and music industry professionals received their first international recognition as DownBeat Student Music Award win - ners. Winning a DownBeat Student Music Award is an accomplishment that should be included on any col - lege application or professional resume.

Since its founding in 2002, Lagond has become one of the

nation’s most successful college pre - paratory programs for music in the entire country, offering students the training, guidance and rigorous instruction needed to prepare them for their college studies and for rewarding careers in music and enter - tainment.

Located in Elmsford, New York, Lagond is a not-for-profit academy dedicated to contemporary music education and live music perform - ance, serving a diverse community of students throughout Westchester County and the surrounding area. The curriculum spans all contem - porary musical genres and includes courses in popular music songwriting, composition, theory, jazz and con - temporary performance, production and engineering. With training pro - vided by an experienced faculty and visiting guest artists, Lagond students have achieved success in national competitions and have gone on to gain acceptance and scholarships from the most prestigious music col - leges and ivy league universities in the country. WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE: SISTER ACT Review by Jim Petrillo

Westchester Broadway Theatre presents the divine musical comedy Sister Act ! This former Broadway show is based on the movie by the same name starring Whoppi Goldberg. The story centers around Deloris Van Cartier, played by the beautiful and talented Zuri Washington, a disco Queen who needs to hide from her murderous boyfriend and his gang after witnessing a murder. She is placed in protective custody and hidden in a convent. Mother Superior, played by Mary Jo McConnell, puts Deloris in a habit so she blends in with the other nuns.

Adding to the conflict, we soon learn that convent is about to be sold. Deloris, who is a singer, is put in charge of the choir of flat, off key singing nuns. She is successful in turning choir into a popular, gospel singing group who may be able to save the convent from being sold. Their music fills the theater with energy and beautiful harmonies. All of the Sisters gave strong singing performances. It is truly a treat to watch the antics of the nuns, especially Sister Mary Robert, played by Lani Corson as they sing and dance their way into the audience hearts.

No musical would be complete without a love story mixed into the plot, and Sister Act is no exception. Danny Wilfred plays the role of Eddie Souther, (aka “Sweaty Eddie”) the police officer put in charge of protecting Deloris. Tension builds between Deloris and Eddie… but you’ll need to come see the show to see if they end up together!

Featuring original music by local resident, Tony and 8-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, dazzling dance routines

and songs inspired by Motown, Soul, and Disco, makes Sister Act a fast moving, FUN show! As always, WBT offers the best one-seat dinner and theater value in the area, offering a wonderful meal and a superb show for one low price. Sister Act runs through July 1st. Be sure to buy your tickets for this fun, popular show. Reservations: 914-592-2222. More info at: www.BroadwayTheatre.com. Also check the website for ongoing special offers!

TWELVE ANGRY MEN YCP TheaterWorks June 8th through 17th

Adapted by Sherman L. Sergel. Based on the Emmy award-winning television movie by Reginald Rose and Directed by Joel Karpoff.

A 19-year-old man has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. It looks like an open-and-shut case — until one of the jurors begins opening the others’ eyes to the facts. “This is a remarkable thing about democracy,” says the foreign-born juror, “that we are notified by mail to come down to this place — and decide on the guilt or innocence of a person; of a man or woman we have not known before. We have nothing to gain or lose by our verdict. We should not make it a personal thing.” But personal it is, with each juror revealing his own character as the various testimonies are re-examined, the murder is re-enacted and a new murder threat is born before their eyes! Tempers get short, arguments grow heated, and the jurors become 12 angry men. Featuring: Brian Bagot, Tom Campbell, Scott Faubel, Sean Latasa, Trevor Latasa, Robert E. Molloy, Marshall Moseley, Jonathan Nelson, Rich Sheehy, Kenneth Skjeveland, Steven Sylvia, Tim Trewhella and Stephen Zerilli.

Performances: Friday & Saturday Nights: June 8th, 9th and 16th at 8pm, Sunday Matinees: June 10th and 17th at 2pm. Shrub Oak United Methodist Church Parish Hall, 1176 East Main Street, Shrub Oak, NY 10588. The Parish Hall is the white one-story building behind the stone church. PAULA POUNDSTONE PAULA POUNDSTONE C OMES T O M USIC H ALL The Tarrytown Music Hall, in

association with Music Without Borders, will present comedian Paula Poundstone on Friday, June 1st at 8pm. Tickets are $33-$48 and can be purchased online at www.tarrytownmusichall.org or 1- 877-840-0457.

With smart, observational humor and a legendary spontane - ous interaction with the crowd, Paula Poundstone is one of our country’s pre-eminent comedians. She improvises with a crowd like a Jazz musician, swinging in unex - pected directions without a plan, without a net. There’s a disarming ease in her craft, an immediate sense that she’s so quick on her feet you need never worry about the possibility of something going wrong.

In 1998, when NPR’s #1 show, the weekly comedy news quiz, Wait, Wait... Don’t Tell Me! came calling, Poundstone was the per - fect fit as one of the pundits on the Panel. Nobody can remember if she was a popular regular pan - elist right from the start. When asked about Paula, Wait, Wait host Peter Sagal replied, “Paula Poundstone is the funniest human being I have ever known. Eve - rything she does, thinks, or says is

hilarious. If you cut her into bits, each piece would be funny. (But don’t!). Air becomes funny having been breathed by her.”

Paula is also an Author, Host/ Emcee, Actor and Commentator. She just released her second book, The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness (Algonquin Books). She voiced the character “Forgetter Paula” in Inside Out , winner of the Acad - emy Award for Best Animated Feature and her recent guest appearances include Late Night with Stephen Colbert , CBS Sunday Morning , Major Crimes, Carson

Daly, Nerdist with Chris Hardwick, Weekend Edition and ‘Puzzle Mas - ter’ with Will Shortz !

In her most recent book, The Totally Unscientific Study of the Search for Human Happiness , Paula takes on that most inalien - able of rights — the pursuit of happiness. Offering herself up as a human guinea pig, she tries out a different get-happy hypothesis in a series of “thoroughly scientific” experiments. She gets in shape with taekwondo. She drives fast behind the wheel of a Lam - borghini. She communes with nature while camping with her teenaged daughter. Swing danc - ing? Meditation? Volunteering? Does any of it bring her hap - piness? And more important, can the happiness last when she returns to the daily demands of her chaotic life?

Tony and Emmy Award-winner Lily Tomlin described the book as “A remarkable journey. I laughed. I cried. I got another cat.”

Kirkus , the gold standard of book reviews, described Paula’s new book as “A deeply revealing memoir in which the pathos doesn’t kill the humor — delivers more than it promises.”

Booklist : “Smart, sweet, and

laugh-out-loud funny balm for exceedingly stressful times.” The book climbed to #1 in Humor on both Amazon New Releases and Best Sellers lists in all formats.

Over the years Paula has amassed a list of awards and acco - lades. A star of several HBO spe - cials and her own series, The Paula Poundstone Show on HBO and ABC, she was the first woman, in its then 73rd year, to perform standup comedy at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. In addition, Paula was a special cor - respondent for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno , for the Democratic and Republican conventions, the Inauguration and the Emmy Awards.

Paula is recognized on Comedy Central’s list of “The 100 Best Standup Comics of All Time,” she won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup Comic, and she is included in innumer - able lists, documentaries and lit - erary compendiums noting influ - ential standup comedians of our time.
