B) True/False answers (20 minutes)Read the extract from the book In Ethiopia with a Mule

21 December

Today the Bromley returned from Massawah. Major Bromley has lived in Ethiopia for thirty years and he gave me much practical advice on conditions of highlands, telling me that it will be necessary to carry a full water bottle and supplementary food rations. When I explained that I couldn’t possibly carry more than my present load we decided on the purchase of a pack-mule. Apart from pack-carrying, it is wise to have an animal that can be ridden in an emergency, should one fall ill or break a bone at the back of beyond.

30 December

For two hours we accompanied a donkey-caravan on its way to a market village. The five men and boys registered the usual unsmiling astonishment when they saw us, but I soon realised that despite their silence and inscrutability they had ’taken charge’ of me – obviously as a duty rather than a pleasure. If I stopped to examine a shrub they also stopped and waited politely for me to continue. I soon had reason to be grateful. Jock had been badely loaded and on one steep slope everything suddenly fell off. Without even glancing me, two of my escorts reloaded in a matter of moments; had I been alone, I might have spent hours waiting for help.

31 December

Worksegeh is a hilltop with superb mountains visible in every direction and when we arrived it seemed that my appearance was the most shattering local event since the Italian invasion. A ten-year-old boy was summoned as interpreter; his English is minimal, but he conveyed that soon the headman would come. The headman arrived and stepped forward to greet me ceremonially. He looked ill-at-ease in rumpled khaki slacks and a patched tweed jacket, so I deduced he had donned these garments in my honour. It is said that Western clothes have become status symbols – the highlanders look so dignified in their shammas, which gracefully emphasise their proud, erect bearing.

4. According to the author, the people she usually met along the way weren’t surprised to see her.

5. The people from the donkey-caravan felt obliged to accompany the author.

6. When the mule’s load fell off the author had to wait a long time for help.

7. From what the author says, it seems little of interest happens in the mountain village she visits.

8. The boy who translated for the author spoke very good English.

9. The author doesn’t think the head of the village was wearing the clothes he would normally wear.
