Introduction:
One of the most important stages of mining is reclamation. Mine reclamation is
the process of reclaiming the excavated land to the ecological or economically
viable land. Now the concept of reclamation has been changed and restoration of
the mined out area is preferred.
What is the basic difference between reclamation and restoration?
It is of prime importance for us to know the basic difference between reclamation
and restoration.
Reclamation is the conversion of less productive land into cultivable or more
productive while Restoration is bringing back of Land in its original form after
mining is completed.
Mine reclamation may sound like a massive task and it is for Lignite Project,
Rajpardi but being a mining industry it is the prime responsibility of GMDC
Rajpardi to reclaim the land as per approved Mine Closure Plan.
It is not like mine closure activities are carried out after completion of mining, but
now a days planning started before mining activity and regulatory authorities are

enforcing concurrent backfilling and mine reclamation for which there is the
concept of Progressive Mine Closure Plan.
Salient Features of Mines:
Amod G-19 Ext. Lignite Mine, Rajpardi is the mining sector and deals with
excavation of Lignite, Silica sand and Ball Clay. Amod G-19 Ext. (Rajpardi) lignite
block is located in Amod village in Jhagadia Taluka, Bharuch district of Gujarat.
This block is connected by state highway Bharuch-Rajpipla (6km away), NH-8
(35km away) Bharuch railway station (35km away) and airport at Baroda (125km
away). The salient information about the mine is given in Table.

Why reclamation is necessary?
Lignite is the economic mineral and for the development of the country mining is
required. Mining is the backbone of economy without which we cannot dream of
day to day life in present scenario.
Mining is considered as the most hazardous industry as a huge area of land is
degraded and even the quality of air and water is also altered. Major impact
occurs on land. It is not advisable to left the voids after mining in the present
situation and now it is emphasized to go for restoration/reclamation into some
economically viable options such as :
1) Development of Agricultural Land
2) Development of gaucher Land
3) Fishery
4) Forestry
5) Construction
6) Tourist Site etc.
Amod G-19 Ext. Is the Opencast Mines of 384.9618 ha area out of which 168 ha
area has been excavated yet. The land is degraded to the great extent and it is
our social responsibility to reclaim the land for the local habitants overhere.

Progress Report of One year:
a. Green Belt Development:
Plantation activity has been started from the year 2007 and it is progressing in
phased manner every year in consultation with the local Forest Department.
Amod G-19 Ext. Lignite Mine has carried out plantation in 17.42 Ha. area till
September 2018 which includes 1.44 Ha plantation on backfilled area, 2.72
along road and 11.5 Ha along mining lease boundary and 1.76 Ha in
undisturbed area. The density of the trees is around 1717 plants/Ha.
Total Plantation = 29905
Total Area (in Ha) =17.42

b. Visit of Scientists from NAU:
We have contacted the Principal of College of Agriculture, Bharuch on 1st August
2017 regarding visit of their team in order to give technical guidance to Amod G-
19 Ext. Lignite Mine in development of Agricultural Land in the Physically
reclaimed area against which the scientists visited the site on 19th September
2017.
Prepared By: Seema Kumari, Asst. Manager (Env)
On 15th November 2017, they have communicated to us and give their findings
which are mentioned below:
1. Top Soil layering to be done.
2. Soil testing should be done before carrying out the biological reclamation
activity.
3. Irrigation arrangement should be made beforehand.
4. Water testing should be carried out.
They shown interest in carrying out pilot project at our site against which we have
communicated with the College of Agriculture, Bharuch in order to submit their
detailed project report after which it was transferred to the Navsari Agricultural
University, Navsari from where team of 4 persons has visited our on 1st May 2018
and suggested to develop water management profile in 2 Ha area first and
preparation of bund all around.
Prepared By: Seema Kumari, Asst. Manager (Env)
After marking of 2 ha plot, soil testing in Navsari University and making the
earthen bund along the plot, the team was again invited to visit the site and
further give their inputs against which they visited Amod G-19 Ext. Lignite Mine,
Rajpardi on 21st August 2018.
During this visit, they recommended following steps to follow for the
development of 2 Ha Agricultural Land:
1) Tilling of Plot
2) Broadcasting of Sunn hemp seeds and organic manure
3) After development of Sunn Hemp,it is to be utilised as green manuring
4) Continuous water supply to the designated 2 ha Plot.
Prepared By: Seema Kumari, Asst. Manager (Env)
c. Developmental stage of Site Preparation alongwith
irrigation arrangement in 2 Ha area:
The void generated during mining was backfilled to the ground level and then
Top soil layering was carried out in it which leads to the completion of physical
reclamation of the 8 Ha Plot.

Water Arrangement:
Following arrangement has been done for establishment of irrigation system:
1) Installation of 20 HP Motor in Hankaran nallah
2) 850 m HDPE Pipeline Connection upto the Tank
3) Utilisation of MS IOCL Tank of 20 KL capacity
4) Drip Irrigation to the Plantation
5) Utilisation of PVC Pipe and Flexible Pipe for irrigation in Grass Seed Plot
