Do you speak English? Italian? Flemish? Dutch? German? French too?

Already on Friday, the paths of the Journées des Plantes de Chantilly sounded like a Tower of Babel. A European session both on the visitors’ and on the nurseries’ side! The list of Prix and Mérites won by different stands and plants reads like a tribute to the Europe of Gardens, a trend that is blosso-ming in Chantilly session after session!

31 000 visitors (a 10% increase on May 2016) came during the three days of the event, while the sun played hide and seek behind the clouds. Almost summer weather to highlight the blooms and fragrances of this colourful session!

▲ Prince Amyn Aga Khan and Mr. Arnaud Delbard holding the rose ‘Domaine de Chantilly’®.

I. About gardening: the buzzword, frost!

The impact of the late April frosts and drought were in all conversations. Frost hit after the first spring days, annihilating most buds and early flowers of many deciduous trees. A disaster for some who couldn’t bring all the plants they had prepared. As

for the drought affecting both the south and the north of the Loire, up to Belgium, it made the very strong shower of Thursday evening very welcome, as fortunately all the stands had been set up.

II. The naming of a new rose

Bred in their domaine de Malicorne by Pépinières et Roseraies Georges Delbard, the Domaine de Chantilly rose was named by Prince Amyn Aga Khan before an enthusiastic crowd. It is exceptio-nally disease resistant, strong flowering as shown by the abundance of its buds. Also strongly repeating,

it is wonderfully fragrant: rose of course, but also exotic fruits. Finally when the rose opens it doesn’t reveal itself at once, it starts slightly pink to turn luminous orangey yellow when revealing its centre. The new rose was wonderfully showcased by Guy Boulnois in a magnificent and very original arbour.

III. A technicolor garden: a theme full of colourful surprises

Surprising and cheerful mixes of colours to inspire gardeners feeling perplexed by the vast array of colours offered by garden plants! For beginners, the entire event was an invitation to become familiar with the pleasures of colours and not to fear mixes!

- The Prix du Domaine de Courson or Prix du Thème was shared between Belgium and Italy. The jury enjoyed the spectacular harmony of soft warm colours in nuances of purples, pinks and mauves offered by the azaleas and rhododendrons of Pépinières Beverlei (Belgium).

The festival of colours continued brilliantly from intensely acid yellow to brightest orange with the citruses presented by the Oscar Tintori nursery (Italy), their first participation at the Journées des Plantes. Difficult to resist the temptation of pic-king these sun drenched juicy fruits. Fortunately visitors could sample all sorts of jams made from these Italian treasures.

- Also from Bella ItaliaFairyland colours under the Parc’s bald cypresses with the ‘Reflets’ installation proposed by the orga-nisers of the major Italian flower show: Orticola-rio. A garden of azaleas produced by the Compa-gnia del Lago Maggiore welcomed the visitor in a formal site designed by Carla Testori. Four paths ran above the azaleas, like the four branches of a star, meeting at the centre in a water mirror reflec-ting the sky; another real mirror placed vertically at the end of one of the paths imparted a poetic and distanced image of reality. Finally, the Italy of painters was conjured up by a selection of delicate dotted buddleias like multicoloured butterflies at Donna di Piante.

- A technicolor festival! Impossible to mention all the multicoloured stands competing to illustrate the technicolor Garden theme. Some of them really stood out with their remarkable staging.

- At Côte-Sud-des-Landes, hydrangeas offered a multicoloured Persian carpet. The presentation of Pépinières Roué associated bright colours, as the Irish heather (Daboecia) dotted with bright red to the electric blue of a small agapanthus (Agapan-thus ‘Lapis Lazuli’), muted by the old rose pastel of a honeysuckle (Lonicera ‘Imperial’); with their brightly coloured catalogue Pépinières Roué won the Prix du Catalogue, digital edition. At Portail Enchanté, the variety of colours of the flowering rhododendrons stole the show, among them Rho-dodendron ‘Cannon’s Double’ was awarded a Mé-rite by the Jury des Mérites.

Naturally, the stands showing maples played the colour card with their surprising foliages This was the case for Pépinières Choteau, whose Acer shira-sawanum ‘Moonrise’ was awarded a Mérite.

- Forever greenFor green enthusiasts, the range of woodland plants offered exceptional foliage such as the many splendid varieties of Podophyllum, so easy to grow and frost resistant; they all have large decorative leaves: incredibly surprising with their embossed, bubbled, spotted or plain textures, sheltering pink hanging flowers (Jardin du Beau Pays, Pépinière Vert’Tige, etc.).

The Journées des PlanTes de ChanTilly - May 2017

This session also saw the return of ferns, with trea-sures unveiled by specialist nurseries like Jardin d’écoute s’il pleut, awarded a Mérite for a very fine fern, Polystichum neolobatum. A great variety of ferns also at Cerdys or Kells Bay House, with their extraordinary subtropical shrub ferns that they adapt in the ideal climate of their Irish nursery.

Hostas have been a safe bet for years, offering a green festival in the shadow of trees. At Pépinières Demoinet green turned yellow green (H. ‘Lemon Lime’) or deepest green (H. ‘Praying Hands’ and H. ‘Tokumada’).

- Not to forget, la vie en blanc... Pépinières Le Try chose to show all the diversity of whites in a presentation of masses of flowering shrubs among which hydrangeas, viburnums, do-gwood (Cornus) and abelias (Abelia Chinensis).

- At Sandrine and Thierry Delavoye’s, a newco-mer was the subject of a passionate debate with the members of the Jury des Mérites. Its name? Cir-sium Pannonicum, to which the qualifier ‘white form’ was added, showing that plants can always surprise the best specialists. Known for its usually purple flowers, this unknown thistle has perfectly white flowers!

IV. At the crossroad between botanyand horticulture

- A crop of Prix and Mérites for Plantes et CulturesThe people from Plantes et Cultures nurseries (easi-ly identifiable with their poppy printed shirts) once again offered beautiful stands, demonstrating their remarkable botanical level and the exceptional workmanship of the nurseries grouped in this asso-ciation. Atelier du Végétal was awarded the Prix du Domaine de Chantilly for the quality, the interest, and the originality of the plants they showed and the attractiveness of the presentation. The Jury des Mérites distinguished this very young nursery with a Certificat botanique for a fine climber Dactyli-capnos scandens.

It was no surprise that the Pépinière des Laurains received the Prix de la Presse (together with the Pépinière Lappen), for its remarkable staging of jewel like conifers, which should be the pride of any garden or terrace; they are wonderfully attrac-tive, varied, resistant and easy to keep.

The Prix du Catalogue, paper section, was awarded to Monique Chevry at Jardin d’ Adoué. The perfect opportunity to highlight the im-portance of paper catalogues, essential for gar-deners who not only keep them preciously but also take them to the garden before they order! The catalogue was up to the high standards of the presentation of Jardin d’Adoué and its fine hardy perennials, bred in harsh conditions that are perfectly adapted to periods of drought and severe cold, among which the Jury des Mérites distinguished Thalictrum ‘Black Stockings’, with a Recommandation.

- Trees and shrubs at the forefront! The Prix de la Presse was awarded to the Lappen nursery from Germany (together with Pépiniéres des Laurains); their remarkable first participa-tion in the Chantilly Journées des Plantes did not go unnoticed, particularly the attention given to their presentation. And the beauty of their woven oaks!

A member of the jury, Stéphane Marie, underlined the fact that this prize acknowledges work intended for professionals but which the public can enjoy everyday in their urban environment. Additionally the Jury des Mérites selected Pépinière Lappen for its Wisteria floribunda ‘Alba’, with edible delicately honey flavoured white flowers (delicious in dum-plings).

The jury of the APBF (Association des Parcs Botaniques de France) unanimously selected the exceptional presentation of the Pépinières du Vent Val (Belgium). They offered exceptional diversity, with a great choice of high quality woody plants selected by Étienne Dardenne, each taxon perfectly labelled. The Jury took this opportunity to signal that a well-identified and well-named plant makes it possible to know its ecological environment and so to grow it appro-priately.

On Damien Devos’s stand, tree and shrub lovers were once again impressed by the trea-sures sown and grown by the young Belgian nurseryman, notably with a selection of Caly-canthus, of which purple red flowered C. rauls-tonii ‘Hartlage Wein’ or a ravishing C. chinen-sis with delicate pink white flowers around a soft yellow centre. Louis Benech couldn’t help scratching the trunk of a C.floridus nicknamed ‘Spicebush’ in the United Kingdom, to smell its camphor fragrance, with flowers reminiscent of lotus or small magnolia flowers. He also stop-ped by Aralia elata ‘Variegata’ (Chinese Ange-lica), whose white marbled foliage (not yellow) is ideal for shadow corners in the garden.

- The extraordinary diversity of rosesWhen they gave the Prix des Collections to Roses Loubert, the CCVS (Conservatoire des Collections Végétales Spécialisées) Jury wanted to highlight for the public the extraordinary work accomplished by this nursery specialised in varieties of botanical roses and old varieties, around fifteen families. Every year the nursery propagates more than 2 200 different varieties, which belong to French heritage. For its hundredth issue, the magazine Hommes & Plantes published by the CCVS dedicated a feature story to the nursery and its remarkable work.

Lovers of botanical roses could not miss the presentation of Pépinières Brochet-Lanvin. Vi-siting their stand was an opportunity to talk about roses and their travels, their origins, graf-ting, and the importance of the shape of their roots with Édith Brochet who can explain to neophytes in a few words why this or that rose can adapt to their garden and why others never will. A valuable lesson in botany! The Jury des Mérites awarded a Recommandation to Rosa ‘Euphrates’.

V. Hauts de France

- The technicolor garden designed by the Airion Lycée agricole and the Ribécourt Lycée horticole made good on its promises. With the help of the landscape designer Aurelie Botte, from Aromega, the students transformed the three primary colours - blue, red and yellow - into three extremely inven-tive gardens, where even the furniture was craftily made from recycled wood pallets.

- The Association des Parcs et Jardins de Picardie et the Comité des Parcs et Jardins de France showed a garden inspired by the Hauts de France, signed by garden designers Élise and Martin Hennebicque, and created by Olivier Leroy. Their colourful crea-tion mixed grasses and ruderal plants and showed fruit trees and vegetable plants. This ode to regional treasures will be offered by the Association des Parcs et Jardins de Picardie to a school, a retirement home or a memorial site, on the occasion of the national event, Rendez-vous aux Jardins (first weekend of June 2017).

IV. Imagination, creation, invention...design in the garden

An abundance of colours, especially on the Cou-leurs en la matière stand, awarded the Prix Autour du Jardin for a hotpot table in pigmented cement. Created by Aurélien Lemire, this hotpot has a table with a detachable tray, covered in sedums to hide the wood-burning hotpot when not in use. The good size hotpot is made in reinforced metal to prevent burn and wear. A well-made, convenient, vegetalised object that looks good all year.

The Journées des PlanTes de ChanTilly - May 2017

The Prix Autour du Jardin also selected three ob-jects for spring 2017:

- a chaise longue with a footrest, called Akebia pre-sented by Maison Potier. This model built in iron and chestnut wood with 19th century crafts tech-niques can be folded. It can be made in different colours, on request.

- A tomato tunnel and tomato string proposed by Serre Natuelle. The first is a small greenhouse that opens completely with a crank, the lateral venti-lation giving maximum access, the second comes from the professional world, it is sold in 20m reels with 40 clips. All you need to grow tomatoes suc-cessfully!

- A garden chair from Modelage du Blavet ‘Pre-lass’. This low armchair is made from chestnut wood from the Périgord. The seat can be folded and it can stay outdoors. This well designed chair is ideal for peaceful moments, thanks to its very comfortable long back that offers excellent support to the head.

V. Children first

Several very successful activities for children, inclu-ding the Association Noe’s workshops, where they could make refuges for insects with wire and hear explanations on the importance of bugs in the gar-den. The little ones saw chicks and baby rabbits at the Ferme Européenne des Enfants and could grind cereals to make flour, and also plant tomatoes and salads. They all left with a small bag of flour and their plantations.

III. What the Mérites say

A. Trees and shrubs

1. Trees

Acer shirasawanum ‘Moonrise’ (Mun001)MériteThis small maple grafted on Acer Palmatum with a compact and rounded habit was obtai-ned from seedlings discovered by Carl Munn in Oregon (USA). As suggested by its name, it stands out in the moonlight after sunset. Its exceptional carmine red spring foliage turns chartreuse green and yellow in summer, and becomes red in autumn. This hardy tree (H 2 to 3m x w. 2 to 3m) needs well-drained soil, in the sun or half shadow, eventually on a terrace in an adapted container.

2. Shrubs

Rhododendron ‘Cannon’s Double’ - MériteThis very vigorous and hardy deciduous shrub grafted on R. luteum from North America is remarkable for its pink white trumpet shaped double flower, with a yellow centre that will bring light and fragrance to your garden in April-May. Its lustrous dark green and purple foliage becomes light red and bronze in autumn. It should be planted in half shadow or shadow in well-drained fresh acid soil. It is small (H1.6; x w. 1.4m) and creates a very decorative element in a bed or in an isolated position.

Le Portail enchanté ▼

Cornus kousa ‘Beni-fuji’ - RecommandationCollected on Mount Fuji by Yamashita, Ishi-kawa and Hagiwara from Japan, this hardy shrub is grafted on Cornus kousa subs. Chinenis. It flowers abundantly in bracts, evolving from white to pink in May-June, followed by small edible fruits with a smooth brown peel. Its com-pact flared habit (H 3m x w. 3m) and its dark green deciduous foliage which turns flamboyant red in autumn make it a precious asset in a gar-den or a park. It should be planted in well-drai-ned, rich or neutral soil, in the half shadow or sun, in a bed or in an isolated position.

Le Clos du Verbosc ▶

3. Climbers

Clematis ‘Miranda’ = ‘Floclemi’RecommandationThe dark blue star shaped ribbed flowers of this clematis selected in the United Kingdom by Barry Fretwell make it an elegant herbaceous plant. It is hardy (-15º) and adapts to any soil, in the sun or half shadow. Its small size (H 2mx w 1m) and dense spreading flowers will look wonderful against a shrub, in a bed of peren-nials or even in a pot. It can also be let to run on the ground.

4. Roses

Rosa ‘Euphrates’ = ‘Harunique’RecommandationA small non-repeat rose bush (H 40-50 cm), born by chance and selected in 1986 by Hack Harkness in the United Kingdom (Hultemia persica x R. ‘Trier’). Its single bright pink flower

with a plum coloured eye is very similar to a cistus’s or a helianthemum’s, with hardiness as a plus. It is also very resistant to drought, defi-nitely an additional asset for rock gardens or any dry soil.

B. Perennials

Polystichum neolobatum - MériteThe regular and well-spread habit of this fern endemic in China, Himalaya, Japan and Taiwan will create an excellent impact in a bed in the shadow (H1m). Its bright green foliage with sharp pinnules has wide russet scales on the reverse, particularly attractive on the young spring scrolls. Very hardy (-25º) and evergreen, it is undemanding and adapted to a dry posi-tion in a bed or a wood. It needs acid to neutral fresh, well-drained soil.

Les jardins d’écoute s’il pleut ▼

Cirsium pannonicum (forme blanche) - MériteThis large cirsium is the recent introduction of a white flowered natural selection, found along railway tracks in Bulgaria. The purple flower type is common in natural milieus in the Bal-kans.The height (2m) of this white, strongly growing form renews its use in natural gardens. It flowers generously from July to October, and attracts bees. This perennial plant was awarded a Mérite, because it is easy to grow, preferably in heavy clay soils and can be used to give struc-ture to beds.

Thierry et Sandrine Delabroye ▶

Filipendula multijuga ‘Hjördis’RecommandationThe jury noticed this still too rare perennial from the Rosacea family, obtained by division at the botanical garden of Goteborg (Sweden). It is also called Red umbrella in the United Kingdom. Its denticulate foliage, veined with purple in spring and its tender pink flowers from June to July will enliven beds situated in the shadow, among Epimedium, ferns, helle-bores and Hostas. Easy to grow, even in heavy clay soil, it can also be grown in a container.

Thalictrum ‘Black Stockings’RecommandationThe appeal of this new plant selected byTERRA NOVA® Nurseries (Oregon, USA) lie in its almost black floral stalks, its elegant den-ticulate foliage and its purple pink flowering in light umbels in May-June. Its rapid growth, its average height (H1m) and its resistance to rain make it an ideal plant for all gardens, in the sun or the shadow.

Le Jardin d’Adoué ▼

Dactylicapnos scandens - Certificat botaniqueThe specificity of this perennial plant (formerly in the genus Dicentra) is to be a shadow clim-ber (H 3 m x w 1.5 m), found in Nepalese, Tibetan and Chinese forests. It was noticed for its deciduous foliage with white margins and particularly for its pale yellow bell-like flowers with red tips flowering from June to October. Gold tears (its other name) requires a fresh and humus-rich soil, without stagnant humidity. This climber must be protected from strong frosts is ideal to bring light to shrub beds in the shadow.

C. Orangerie and greenhouse plants

Lonicera hildebrandiana - MériteThis rare giant honeysuckle from the edge of Chinese forests (Yunnan) appealed to the jury with its wonderfully fragrant and spectacu-lar flowers (20cm) that go from pure white to orange yellow before wilting. Its persistent to half-persistent foliage needs to be strongly supported to hold its branches that can reach 10m. Semi-hardy it needs to be mulched and can be cut down if taken into a greenhouse. It prefers a rich and well-drained soil and a sunny position.

Pépinière Nature & Tropiques ▼

Alyogyne ‘Delightfully’ - RecommandationThis Australian Malvaceae is a shrub perennial that can reach a height of 1.50m. Its gracious stalks with fine persistent dissected foliage hi-ghlight its generous flowering extending from spring to autumn. One can only be impressed by the delicate beauty of its remarkable blue mauve flowers with a dark red centre. Easy to care for, it needs to be planted in the sun in a lightly draining soil and to be protected from frost. Better suited to container growth.

Pépinière Braun ▶

Tillandsia xiphioides - RecommandationThis epiphyte plant obtained from seed, origi-nally from Bolivia and Argentina, grows at dif-ferent heights up to 2 600m. It develops slowly and displays grey blue, persistent rigid foliage in the shape of rosettes. The interlocked bracts on the yellowish stalks carry strongly fragrant white flowers with three petals that look like irises. This rare tillandsia is one of the most fragrant. It is easy to grow in a greenhouse or outside if taken in in winter. It can also be sus-pended indoors or in a patio.

Paphiopedilum ‘Prince Edward of York’ Certificat botaniqueThis spectacular slipper orchid with an upright fire red striped back sepal has a very graphic shape (H 70cm x span 70cm). Its twisted and mottled petals can extend down to 40cm, like two big moustaches. It must be kept indoors, in half shade, its spring/summer flowering lasts 6 to 8 weeks. It grows vigorously and requires the traditional mix of pine bark.

Vacherot & Lecoufle ▼

Bowiea volubilis - Certificat botaniqueThis South African Liliacea named after the English gardener James Bowie (1789-1869) was obtained by division. The size of this sub-ject’s bulb is exceptional (15cm). A large clim-bing flower stem (3 to 4m) appears in spring on which small green flowers open in summer. It then wilts to go back to its original volume. This indoor ornamental plant requires expo-sure to strong light and a well-drained substrate in a cold greenhouse for example; it should not be watered in winter.

D. Jury’s choice

Pelargonium ‘Red Rambler’ This remarkable pelargonium has tetraploid flowers with strong compact inflorescences set in intense red pseudo-umbels. When obser-ved closely they look like minuscule porcelain roses. Red Rambler will find pride of place in containers, on terraces and balconies and needs to be protected in winter.
