Jonathan Law High School A Caring Community
November 2012 Volume 14, Number 3
From the Principal
Jonathan Law High School is a community that exists to maximize the intellectual, the social, and the emotional growth of each student in a safe, stable, supportive environment.
Dear Students and Families, It’s hard to believe that the holiday season is upon us! We have made it through an exciting and productive two months of school and as we head into the second marking period, I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your tremendous support of Jonathan Law High School. Holidays are a time to celebrate the importance of family and also the relationships with those you care about. The great strength of our school exists in the relationships among staff, students and families. The busy month ahead brings the continued hard work of our students and staff along with our Homecoming Dance, Annual Powder Puff Game, Thanksgiving Day Football Game and many trips and activities. I wish you all a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving and start to your holiday season. On behalf of Mr. Cavanna, Mrs. Drew and all the staff at Jonathan Law, we look forward to a terrific month ahead. Sincerely,
Fran Thompson

A program required for all 9th graders and their parents
Jonathan Law High School presents:
Underage Drinking Forum
“Choices Have Consequences”
Wednesday, November 7, 2012
7:00 – 8:30 p.m.
*Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.; the program will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m.
Ninth Grade students AND their parents and/or guardians are required to
attend this important forum addressing the topic of underage drinking. The
purpose of the evening is to promote dialogue and provide information
regarding the physical, social, legal and emotional impact of underage drinking.
Students must be accompanied by their parent/or guardian. The forum will be
located in the Jonathan Law High School auditorium. Students should sit with
their parent(s) or guardian(s) during the program.
Student participation at this forum fulfills an assignment within the health
curriculum. Should your child not be able to attend, he/she will be required to
complete a 2–3 page research and writing assignment on an alcohol related
topic in order to independently fulfill their obligation and make them aware of
the aspects of this complex issue addressed at the Forum.
Sincerely,
Fran Thompson, Principal
Freshman Class Dues Slip
Each year students are responsible for paying dues. Dues aid in the cost of graduation and
activities students are involved in during their senior year. Below are the amounts owed each
year for dues. Freshmen are responsible for paying at least $10.00 by the end of this school
year. If you would like to, you may pay dues for all four years at one time.
Please make checks payable to: Jonathan Law High School or JLHS
In the memo line: Student’s name and Class
Checks are preferable over cash since checks are easier to track if there is a discrepancy.
However, returned checks are subject to a $10 fee and will not be covered by the school.
Students will receive a dues card through their homeroom teacher once the payment has been
processed by Ms. Pennacchia. If you wish to send your payment to the school, please send it to
the following:
Jonathan Law HS
Attn: Erica Pennacchia (Freshman Class Advisor)
20 Lansdale Ave
Milford, CT 06460
Please return the bottom portion of this letter with the payment in an envelope. Payment not
sent in an envelope may get lost.

Colleges and universities are increasingly relying on digital data when deciding who gets letters of acceptance.
Employers are increasingly conducting digital background checks on applicants before entrusting them with jobs.
Become aware of your students digital footprint.
You and your child should sit down together and search his or her name in Google or another search engine (Pipl.com, Spokeo.com, 123People.com).
Ethical Internet use is important from day one because what is posted even once is always able to be found.

Celebrating “Crime Prevention” Month
With October being “Crime Prevention Month” the Milford Police Department will be hosting two events
which will be held at the police department for citizens in our community. These events will focus on providing
information to assist residents in crime prevention and child safety.
October 25th
- The Milford Police Department will be presenting an overview of two programs the department
offers which have proven to be very successful in our community.
The first session will provide insight into our “Neighborhood Watch” program. Neighborhood Watch
is one of the most effective and least costly ways to prevent crime and reduce fear in neighborhoods by
forging a bond between residents. Milford has several active Neighborhood Watch programs currently
active and will have representatives from them assisting with the presentation.
The second session will introduce our “Citizens Academy” program. The Citizens Police Academy
consists of a series of classes, held for 2 1/2 hours once a week for 10 weeks. The instruction is
comprehensive, covering different areas of the police department’s services each week. Officers and
supervisors assigned to various divisions conduct each instructional block.
The event hours are from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm. Additional information is available regarding both on our website
at www.milfordpd.org
October 29th
- We have partnered with the Connecticut Freemasons Foundation to offer an evening of child
safety related topics. Information regarding child passenger seat safety, internet safety and Halloween safety
tips will be available. Volunteers from the Connecticut Freemasons will be providing parents and caregivers
Child Identification Kits through the CT CHIP Program. These kits include the child’s fingerprints, tooth
prints, DNA and digital media which are at no cost to families. Eastern Vintage Police Car Association will
have classic police cars on display in the parking lot. Event hours will be 5:30pm – 8:00 pm. For more
information regarding these kits please visit www.ctchip.org
Both events are free to the public and will be held at the police department located at 430 Boston Post Road,
Milford. For further information regarding these events please contact the Milford Police Department Crime
Prevention Unit at (203) 874-2366 or email us at [email protected]
