Jonathan Law High School A Caring Community
June, 2015 Volume 17 , Number 9
From the Principal
Jonathan Law High School is a community that exists to maximize the intellectual, the social, and the emotional growth of each student in a safe, stable, supportive environment.
Dear Friends: So often at this time of the year, the countdown begins, summer plans are made, and students are already checking out for the season. Yet, there is still learning to do and time left to celebrate a very special graduating class. Many of us are viewing June 15th as a bittersweet date. Of course, we want to enjoy the beach and all the fun that summer has in store for us but we have been forever bonded by the tragedy we experienced last April and the incredible day of healing that occurred this April 25th. Through it all, our graduating class has been impacted the most. Because of this, there is a desire to continue to see and support each other. So let’s make sure that happens. Please take the time to stay connected with each other – whether it’s a simple “like” on Facebook (or favorite on Twitter as I learned this year), or a get together for a smoothie at Rita’s. Your support of each other should continue to provide support and comfort as the summer months bring vacation plans, summer friends and time away from Milford. You are all amazing people and I am honored to be part of the Jonathan Law and Milford community. Thank you for your incredible support of our school. Seniors – this is your month and we will do everything we can to make it a very special conclusion of your high school careers. We are so proud of you! There are many activities happening over the next few weeks, none more important than our graduation, senior activities and end of year assessment schedules. Our schedule for the end of year assessments is in this newsletter and I ask you to please stress to your children the importance of being prepared and being on time for their end of year assessments. Also, please remind your students that all school rules are still in effect and that our last school day for students is Tuesday, June 16th (which will be a half-day). I wish you all a wonderful summer and a happy end of the school year. Sincerely, Fran Thompson Mr. Fran Thompson Principal

From the Nurses’ Office - Spring Into Summer: Bugs, Stings and Sun Most bug bites and stings are harmless, yet annoying. They usually can be treated at home with topical medication, use of oral antihistamine, or even a cold pack to the site. BUT… Go immediately to the ER if you experience any of the following signs and symptoms after a bug bite or sting:
• Difficulty breathing • “throat closing sensation” • Swollen lips, tongue or face • Chest pain • Racing heartbeat that lasts for more than a few minutes • Dizziness • Vomiting • Headache • Red, donut-shaped rash that develops after a tick bite • A fever with an unusual rash
Some tips to avoid being bitten: Cover up with long sleeves, and long pants. Check your skin each evening. Try to avoid “buggy” areas. Use sprays and lotions made specifically as bug repellant. Avoid the use of perfumes and scented lotion and creams outdoors. Sun exposure and Sunburns: Be aware that your scalp, eyes and feet can be particularly sneaky sunburn prone areas. Easy to prevent: use SUNSCREEN, GLASSES AND HATS when out of doors. With any unusual moles or skin discoloration; see your dermatologist. And now, more Reminders regarding Physicals! Please remember that all current 10th graders MUST provide a “blue form” physical from their MD prior to beginning the 11th grade. It is even better if this form is handed into the School Nurse before the end of the school year. Also, no student will be eligible to participate in summer sports or conditioning camps without a current physical. “Current” means the physical is considered compliant for 13 months. Physicals are ALWAYS given to the Nurse, not to the Coaches.

“A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he en-countered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn’t thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she’d claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse where she once lived, the unremembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to any-one, let a lone a small boy.
A groundbreaking work as delicate as a butterfly’s wing and as menacing as a knife in the dark, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is told with a rare understanding of all that makes us human, and shows the power of stories to reveal and shelter us from the darkness inside and out.”— Book description
