Jon Bates Design + New Media Consulting (2003 - present)

Creative Director

Consulting on-site and remotely in multiple capacities, including Flash/Flex/AIR design and

development; e-learning systems; interactive training; large project creative direction; user

experience design; SEO/SEM deployment and analytics-based product evolution

Senior-level responsibility for implementing efficient execution of projects within and across

organizational units; leveraging external strategic partnership resources; and promoting

innovation while mitigating budgetary, scheduling and deliverability risks

Expertise building products and designing content across multiple platforms and mediums:

dynamic rich media applications (Flash, FLEX, AIR, Silverlight, HTML5), data-driven website

development, mobile application development (Android, iPhone, Flash 10.2 for mobile, Flex,

Flash Catalyst CS5), brand extension and integration, widget design and development, social

media multiplatform integrated marketing, Facebook corporate presence development

Extensive experience and success managing development teams, budget oversight, schedule

planning & compliance, product teams and fostering individual growth of reports’ skill sets,

leadership, self-direction and peer mentoring

Recent clients and projects include:

eBay, who asked me to research and present a critical assessment of usability

issues to eBay’s senior site managers in San Jose, and to prepare a framework

global solution that managers used as part of a major redesign initiative. I

created a Flash-based concept evaluator which allowed eBay to overlay my

recommendations on the existing sites, as well as the capability to select

subcomponents (search tools, navigation, shopping modules, visitor help

systems) for discrete overlays.

A major Minneapolis-based retailer needed to streamline and automate the

approval process of product line designs: Design images had been emailed back

and forth between the local buyers, several hundred vendor/fulfillment agents, a

design firm in Boston, an India-based ‘concept extrapolation’ design group, and

manufacturing facilities throughout China.

I developed three integrated systems to solve the client’s problem: a Silverlight-

based hub which was deployed within their intranet, and tied to existing

product & inventory SharePoint databases; an installable Flex/AIR widget for

Employment history

designers and buyers to share and approve designs (also connected to

SharePoint); and a mobile app (using HTML5 and Flash) to allow stakeholders to

monitor progress and direct revisions while away from the office.

The hub, Flex/AIR widget and mobile app proactively notified vendors when

designs and revisions were due, automatically assigned version control and

design identification codes for each submitted design, and tracking capabilities

for more than 500 product lines.

The buyers and line managers were able to visually map the status of all active

projects, and audit-trail functionality allowed the retailer’s financial analysts to

identify which vendors were most efficient, where systemic problems existed,

and automated signoff ‘bricks’ provided accountability. This system virtually

eliminated errors or miscommunication, which prevented costly manufacturing

problems and ensured seasonal design strategies were consistent across

multiple product categories.

The client was extremely pleased with the product, and has mandated that it be

extended from use in their ‘soft lines’ division to all non-grocery retail lines

within 12 months. There is also a planned 2.0 version in which I added three

major features and expect to migrate up to the Silverlight 4, Flash 10.2 and AIR

2 platforms; my client determined that this approach delivered key strategic and

competitive advantages, resulting in compartmentalized development under

their ‘Special Projects’ lab with strict non-disclosure requirements for all

involved.

Other clients, including Microsoft, 3M; TellMe; BMW USA; Hewlett-Packard, HotGigs and

Chegg have hired me to creative direct site design, implement AIR, Flash and Silverlight versions

of static sites; provide team training in RIA, Silverlight, Flash and Flex online product architecture

and implement dynamic content development protocols and best-practices.

I have also been tapped to advise and oversee creative staff reorganizations; assess internal

leadership and execution capabilities; and create design process standardization systems

(identity guides; publishing procedures and tools; quality assurance; online toolkits with

templates, code snippets and graphic master templates).

In addition to the above-named clients, I’ve done work for Unisys; Apple Computer; Walker Art

Center; FOX TV; Om Records; HGA Architects; Impossible Fabrics LTD; Hennepin County;

and pro-bono design, business consulting and strategy services for local non-profit organizations
