Job Description -Sister In charge of ICU
Job Title: Sister In charge / Ward Sister(ICU) Place of work: Hospital(KMCTH) Class/level: Gazetted 3rd Year Qualifications: R.N/B.N/B.Sc in Nursing Experience: According to Civil service Act Responsible to: Matron, Assistant Matron and Hospital
Director. Responsible for: Staff nurse, ANM and supporting staff. Responsible with: Matron/Assistant Matron, Hospital
Director, Various department of hospital and other National and International Agencies.
Roles: (Within department)
Manager Administrator Educator Supervisor Researcher Facilitator Counsellor Evaluator
Functions:
1. Clinical activities: To decide if the patient meets eligibility requirement for ICU and do bed
arrangement. To ensure nursing care is delivered safely and all the patient in the unit is
receiving adequate care. Attends Doctor’s round and bringing to their attention points of importance
about their patient. Checks and carries out and delegates Doctor’s instruction order after round. Response quickly to emergencies situation provide assistance to doctor when
required. To ensure special care is given to infection control. To transfer the patient to general ward when there is no longer intensive
treatment required after deciding with doctors.
2. Supervisory activities: Guides and supervises all staff of the unit for giving bed
side nursing care, Provides direct guidance and supervision of nursing and
non-nursing personnel for the efficient running of ward Uses the standard guideline and manual for supervision.
3. Administrative activities: Conducts nursing conference, meeting and individual conference
when necessary. Keeps custody of drugs and maintaining records of the
administration. Checks daily availability and condition of emergency equipment
and supplies. Ensures that relatives of very ill patients are allowed to stay with
patient when necessary. Informs Matron immediately of any special emergencies or
accidents in the ward and keeps a written record of any incidents. Helps Matron for annual plans and budgets in her ward. Delegate responsibilities to the responsible person in her absence
4. Educative activities: Identifies learning need of staff in ward. Plans,conducts and recommends the in-service education
and training programme for her staff.
5. Research activities: Participates in research activities within her ward after
identification of needs.
6. Supporting and recording activities: Maintains the Record/Report of each patient in her ward. Ensures that all patint’s records are written clearly and
completely;and handed over to record section promptly.
7. Communicative activities: Coordinates with staff as well as outside the institution and with
agencies. Maintains good interpersonal relationships with staff and
clients.
8. Counselling activities: Guides and does counseling to staff and patients as required
in her unit.
9. Evaluative activities: Evalutes the total nursing and non-nursing activities in her
unit. Takes active participation in nursing audits. Recommends Matron for her staff promotion and higher
education. Gets feedback from clients for improvement of nursing care.
