JOB DESCRIPTION for POSITION of YEAR 4 CLASS TEACHER Fixed Term: 20 January – 11 December 2020 St Michael’s is a thriving co-educational preparatory school situated in the heart of Christchurch city, on the banks of the River Avon. Founded in 1851, the school is an independent church school in the Anglican faith, set in the grounds of the glorious wooden church of St Michael & All Angels. At 168 years old, St Michael’s is the oldest primary school in Christchurch. As of Term 4, 2019, the school has 100 children on its roll, an increase of 58 since January, 2018, as we continue to rebuild after the earthquake, and the city centre is now flourishing. The school’s maximum size is 160 pupils. We require a dedicated, enthusiastic Y4 classroom teacher to join our friendly and professional staff. This post is suitable for an experienced teacher or an exceptional newly qualified teacher. The position is fixed-term for one year, due to pupil numbers. As St Michael’s is an Anglican church school, our successful applicant will have a Christian faith or will be able to support actively the school’s busy special character. Although previous experience in an independent school is not a requirement, the ability and willingness to appreciate, respect and contribute to St Michael’s independent school culture, vocation, values and historical legacy are essential. Our pupils have a love of learning, and achieve well in small classes, in calm quiet classroom environments. Our maximum year-group size is 20 pupils. The Y4 starting roll for 2020 currently stands at ten children but this will increase throughout the year. Each pupil has his or her own desk, books, tools and locker, and responsibility for these. Formal school uniform is worn each day, and sports’ uniform is also a requirement. Our successful candidate will be a highly motivated teacher with excellent classroom management skills, strong pastoral care, and high expectations for all pupils, including a commitment to set challenging but appropriate educational standards for each child in each subject area. As an independent preparatory school, English and mathematics provide the traditional foundations for St Michael’s pupils, and so strengths in teaching reading, writing and maths are essential. Sound knowledge across the additional curriculum subjects is required, too, to inspire our pupils’ curiosity, enrich their learning and enhance their global citizenship. In Y4, the junior Discovery programme becomes the separate timetable subjects of history, geography and science. Spanish, art and music are taught by on-staff specialists, although expertise in these areas would be most welcome.
