JOB DESCRIPTION

Post Title: ICT Engineer (Networks) Grade: Scale 6 – SO1 Weekly hours worked: 37 hours per week (flexible) Weeks per annum: 52 weeks Responsible to: ICT Manager Duties and Responsibilities: System Maintenance • To manage and maintain the school’s Administration and Curriculum networks • To investigate sources of supply for network hardware, software and, if appropriate,

consumables ensuring adequate working levels of stock • To monitor the condition of the School’s Network and Admin equipment to maximise the

availability and potential of the systems. This will involve locating and correcting faults or arranging repair as required and liaising with suppliers. The mechanism for recording and managing faults is the School’s call handling system

• To manage and maintain efficient strategies to prevent loss of data through:

• illegal access and damage by viruses • accidental loss in the Administration domain

• To react appropriately on finding breaches of security and evidence of new risks to which

systems are exposed • To investigate ways of monitoring ICT network usage to enable statistical analysis of

usage identifying opportunities for performance improvement • To manage and maintain users and their access rights to the Derbyshire Net for Learning

website and, where appropriate, to assist the ICT Engineer (Curriculum) to manage other user accounts (staff, student and Adult Ed)

• To provide technical advice and support to the users of the video-conferencing facilities • To maintain up-to-date network documentation

System Development • To maintain and contribute to the development of the school wide network infrastructure • To maintain links with outside agencies for extended support to school based ICT

systems • To provide day-to-day management of the network related contracts, identifying shortfalls

and areas for development including the raising and progressing of problems • To keep abreast of network developments being planned and implemented by the LEA

and to act as the primary interface with the LEA on networking matters • To maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of networks and relevant ICT systems and

their use with particular reference to their uses in education • To be an active participant in developing, planning and implementing advanced

communication systems for use both within school and between school and home Inventory Management • To provide the ICT Engineer (Curriculum) with details of network equipment and

configuration details to enable management of an appropriate system for recording equipment inventory details

Staff Support and Training • To assist with the development of school policies with regard to standards of operation

and use of ICT equipment throughout the school and ensure they are applied • To provide support for ICT users in all areas of the school • To support out of hours ICT sessions as required • To provide cover for other members of the Whole School ICT team as appropriate • Provide support for partner primary schools Other • Unless otherwise directed the post holder will determine priorities and scheduling of work • The role entails the manual lifting and moving of equipment • To undertake any other reasonable duties within the overall function, commensurate with

the grading and level of responsibility of the job Note: The Headteacher has a responsibility to revise and amend all job descriptions, as

necessary. This will normally be by consultation and agreement with the post holder and, to this end, all job descriptions will be kept under regular mutual review.

Degree or relevant equivalent qualification Familiar with PCs, operating systems and PC construction Good understanding of server technology, server hardware, Microsoft operating systems and Citrix virtualisation platforms

Good understanding of computer networks especially relating to TCP/IP, Switching, Firewalls & VLAN’s

Evidence of a high level of skill in the implementation and maintenance of ICT applications in a school environment

General understanding of Management Information and Content Management based applications

Excellent practical and problem solving skills High level of organisational skill Ability to work effectively with other members of the ICT and wider school teams

Ability to work with children and adults Ability to plan, monitor and evaluate initiatives A commitment to stay in touch with developments in ICT and their implications for education
