Dear Community,

The dinner table is the centre for the teaching and practising not just of table manners

but of conversation, consideration, tolerance, family feeling,

and just about all other accomplishments of polite society except the minuet. Joan Chittister

Parents and family members are the most important educators of children. Our school exists to assist parents in the

development of mature young people, who are capable, just and caring adult members of society. As a Catholic school,

we celebrate each young person as a child of God and, together with you, aim to help them grow to their full potential.

Each week I see this goal being enacted in every classroom as children strive and stretch themselves to deepen their

understanding of themselves and the world.

Our Term 4 calendar is quickly filling up and we have needed to make a change of date. Please note:

Prayer

This is the day the lord has made; help us rejoice and be glad.

Ps117:24

Spirit of God, as we each move back to the business of our

personal lives, may our thoughts be of gratitude and celebration

for the gift of life, for it’s blessings and opportunities.

Help us to see life as a gift, to live it, to enjoy it, to celebrate it,

to fulfil it and most of all to love it.

Amen

From Mr Laffan Dear children and parents,

The celebration of children reading and writing is most powerful

when it happens at home and at school. Here is a true story from

our community, Alfie Warner in Kindergarten is loving reading and

is motivated to write at school. At home he has started producing

his own book about his cat. Each night he is adding to the story

with the aim of sharing it with his class as his news item. His

parents are working with him to get these important personal

stories written. Well done Alfie for realising that reading and writing

gives us the chance to learn and to share our stories. Perhaps

giving your child a special writing book or journal might be a gift

that encourages your child to continue their growth as a writer. Or

try writing yourself while your child writes. This is a powerful

message that shows ‘my mum and dad think writing is important’.

The staff day in Week 1 saw the teachers unpacking ways to

support positive attitudes to reading. We read the work of Kaye

Lowe and Donalyn Miller to open conversations on how to make

sure that reading is accessible to all our students. In the afternoon

session we investigated ‘Visible Learning’ and read chapters of Dr.

John Hattie. All staff were given a copy of ‘The Book Whisperer’

which is an inspiring book on how to instill a love of reading for all

our students. Teachers have been interviewing all students this

about their attitudes as a reader and this data is

really important for knowing how to develop

readers by introducing them to relevant authors.

All the best, and happy reading!

Mr Laffan

Reader of the Week

Benjamin Jiang

I’m reading the 39 Storey Tree house at the moment, by Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton. It’s a ten out of ten because it is really funny. My Minecraft book is my favourite but I am hoping to read ‘The Bad Book’ soon. Benjamin—Year 2

Calling all Kinder Parents, You may recall that at the opening school Mass this year,

your child was welcomed to St Bede’s with a welcome

badge. These are a wonderful memento and a tradition that

is important to St Bede’s.

I would like to invite all present Kinder parents to a craft

morning, where we will make the badges and the “Tea and

Tissue” packs that will be presented to our new class of 2017

Kinders next year at the opening School Liturgy; and to their

parents on the first day of 2017.

Please join me on Thursday, 27th October in the school

library at 9.30am and together we will make badges ready for

2017. I really appreciate the help and I feel it’s a lovely way

to welcome our new students and their families. Morning Tea

will be provided.

Look forward to meeting you then,

Ann Monkhouse
