Volume XXXIII Number 6 | November - December 2012

The first six months of The Nash, Jazz in AZ's new education and performance center in Phoenix, have been nothing short of spectacular in every respect. Envisioned as a place to bring the jazz community together, build new audience, and provide performance opportunities for young musicians, The Nash is already delivering magnificently on its promise…and changing lives in the process.

Please consider making a generous tax-deductible gift to support The Nash now. You can donate to the general operation of Jazz in AZ and The Nash, or consider a naming gift opportunity that celebrates your support, or to honor another. Clearly, The Nash has created a long overdue and essential focus on jazz in the Valley and we invite you to be a part of that legacy.

Just look at the activities and accomplishments at The Nash so far:

üJazz for Young People event with Wynton Marsalis and the Lewis Nash All-stars

üA Grand Opening Concert with 2 sold-out shows starring The Lewis Nash Super-Stars with Houston Person, Russell Malone, Cedar Walton, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash

ü“Catch a Rising Star” concerts featuring high school, college and recently graduated musicians

üWeekly Sunday Jam Sessions with an average of 30+ student and pro musicians playing per session, and a roomful of listeners

üEducational clinics and workshops taught by leading jazz educators from across the Valley and visiting jazz luminaries, such as Danilo Perez

üAn extraordinary monthly 'jazz lines' improvisation workshop led by Mike Kocour, director of Jazz studies at ASU

üRehearsals and performances by Maricopa Community Colleges Jazz Big Bands and Young Sounds of Arizona

üPerformances by touring 'new jazz' artists – and the establishment of The Nash as a regional tour stop (The word is out and we're on the map!)

üParticipation in First Fridays, attracting 1,500+ people per event to The Nash and exposing them to live jazz

üBi-monthly themed visual art shows with broad community representation of artists

Plus…we're planning 'new jazz' concerts on Friday nights, 'mainstream jazz' concerts on Saturdays, the continuation of the Sunday jam session, and more concerts and educational activities throughout the week that take advantage of opportunities to catch touring musicians on routings and collaborate with the Musical Instrument Museum, Mesa Arts Center and more.

We've only just begun to build the concert and educational programs at The Nash. With the planned opening of our educational annex early next year, we'll soon have many more programs in place to enhance jazz education in the Valley, including combo-coaching, solo development, and private instruction by leading jazz musicians/teachers.

Of course, Jazz in AZ is planning to continue its Jazz in Concert Series at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale, as well as parties, dances, scholarships, How Cool is Jazz programs in elementary schools, and more.

But maintaining this heightened level of activity depends on additional

funding…and your support is so important to us now!

Please read the testimonials from two of our Nash Jam regulars: the grateful parent of a young drummer and a young alto sax player. Then, you can go online to www.TheNash.org or use the coupon following the testimonials to make your gift. If you would like to explore other options including legacy gifts, please call me directly at 602-750-7045. If you care about jazz, The Nash IS the quintessential

force for jazz in our region and a model for America. To quote Charlie Parker, “Now is the Time.” In advance, we thank you for supporting The Nash.

The Jazz in AZ party on Sunday, Nov. 18, will feature Latin Alley, an exciting new combination of players featuring accomplished Valley musician Dan Pinson on sax and flute, whose dynamite CD,

South of The Border (1997) showcased his impressive Latin chops; and Cuban-born pianist Marcos Crego, a relative newcomer to the

Valley and the U.S., who is fresh from two 2011 Latin Grammy Award wins for his performance on Edwin Bonilla's CD, Homenaje a Los Rumberos.

Maybe you heard Crego at the March JiA Party with Sancocho, or caught him sitting in at The Nash recently. Memorable!) Add rhythm masters Felix Sainz on bass, John Herrera on drums and Caleb Michel on percussion, and this musical match-up is destined to produce an exciting party with expressive, energetic and explosive music.

Born in Phoenix, Pinson started his music career playing clarinet at the age of seven. Classically trained on clarinet at Arizona State University, Dan has performed with three orchestras: Arizona State

University, Scottsdale Symphony and Glendale Community. During three decades, Pinson studied with jazz and classical music educators including George Cables, Gary Foster, Eric Kloss, Joe Corral and Chuck Marohnic. Pinson's performance career has taken him to jazz clubs and festivals in the U.S., Mexico and Europe. He has been a roster artist with the Arizona Commission on the Arts since 1992 and has provided workshops, master classes and lecture-demonstrations

to more than 25,000 students in elementary and secondary schools, community colleges, universities, musicians' unions and community centers throughout Arizona and Mexico.

Marcos Crego was born in Havana, Cuba, on July 12, 1978. He followed in the footsteps of his father, the great trumpet player Jose Miguel Crego (“El Greco”), and started studies at the Manuel Saumell

Conservatory of Music in his native city when he was five years old. Crego was inspired to play with his classmates in a variety of musical groups. He then

attended and graduated from Amadeo Roldán Music School. After graduation, his career took off with opportunities to perform in jazz festivals with many notable musicians. When he was 21, he produced his first album, Mi Musica, which launched his career as a musical producer. He also

collaborated as a pianist and keyboard player on many albums, leading up to his recent Grammy wins. He currently teaches piano at the New School for the Arts and Academics in Tempe. Both Pinson and Crego have extensive Latin-jazz repertoires, so this party will be a showcase for some great charts. If you're moved by mambo, cha cha, salsa, samba and other Latin flavors, this is a party not to be missed!

Kazimierz World Wine Bar is a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages. Kaz is located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Admission to the public is $15 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply.

JAZZ NOTES 3

The two biggest factors in my jazz education have been private instruction with a great jazz teacher and playing every week in jam sessions at The Nash. You can only learn so much about jazz in the classroom; nothing compares to the challenge of playing on the fly and testing your skills with other musicians at a jam session. It makes you grow musically and lets you know what you need to work on to improve. The Nash is easily the most important venue for jazz education in Arizona, especially because it has no age restrictions – not to mention all of the great jazz musicians that I've already heard playing there. The Nash has definitely changed the lives of my fellow students and myself.-Sean Kelso, ASU student

This year, the Valley Jazz Divas concert will star vocalists Margo Reed, Sherry Roberson, Delphine Cortez and Renee Patrick. The Divas show is part of

the Jazz in AZ-Kerr “Jazz in Concert” series made possible by generous support from the Jazzbird Foundation. The concert is at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Dec. 5, at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale. Tickets are $24 for general admission, $29 for reserved seats and are available at the Kerr Box Office, 480-596-2660 (save on fees), and online at www.asukerr.com. Jazz in AZ members may take advantage of a $4 per seat discount.

The Divas concert is like four sensational concerts for the price of one. Each of the singers has her own unique style -- from overall presentation to the way she phrases and feels time. It's a study in contrasts.

Margo Reed is widely regarded as the icon of Valley female vocalists, having paved the way for the musical Reed family to relocate here in the mid-'70s from Kankakee, Illinois. Margo, a recipient of a Jazz in AZ Lifetime Achievement Award, is known for her “in-

the-pocket” swing, as well as “love-mushy” ballads, profound message songs and lowdown blues.

Sherry Roberson came to the Valley in 1959 and has a long history of club and concert performances in the Valley, as well as stints in Istanbul and Bangkok. Sherry brings a blues orientation to the mix, along with a freight train-like drive and a propensity to “play with time,” moving phrases ahead or behind the beat, as the spirit moves her.

Delphine Cortez hails from Indiana and performed at top clubs on Chicago's famous Rush Street before coming to the Valley in the mid-'80s to cover a gig for Margo. Delphine continued to get booked by top Valley restaurants and clubs, and never went back home! Her diverse repertoire and unique arrangements range from standards and bossa novas to jazz interpretations of “Moondance,” “The Look of Love,” “Put Your Records On” and other pop songs.

Renee Patrick is from Philadelphia

and was born into a musical family. Her father, George “Pepi” Grant was a member of George Holmes' Ink Spots, and was inducted into the 1996 Hall of Fame of the United in Group Harmony Association as lead singer of the Castelles. Renee's mother, Teresa Botial, also was a professional singer who recorded duets with Terry Johnson of the Flamingos in Detroit's Motown Studios, alongside greats such as Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. Renee's voice is honest and

November - December 2012

Two Valley-favorite guitarists – Jack Petersen and Stan Sorenson – will join musical forces for the Jazz in AZ holiday party on Sunday, Dec. 16, with Ted

Sistrunk on bass and John Lewis on drums. Expect to hear both jazz standards, uniquely spirited renditions of holiday favorites, and a bit of

humor, too! One of the most respected jazz

guitarists in the world today, Jack Petersen has made his mark not only as a player, but also as an educator of extraordinary influence on a generation of young musicians. Petersen honed his skills at University of North Texas in the early 1950s. In 1962, Petersen designed the first guitar program at the Berklee School of Music. He returned to Dallas in 1965, and in the mid-1970s, Petersen was tapped to develop the jazz guitar program at the University of North Texas. The University of North Florida (UNF) lured the guitar master away in 1988, where he remained until his retirement until 1995.

Petersen's professional performance associations include Billy Taylor, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, Dave Brubeck, Herb Ellis, Stan Kenton, Rufus Reid, Milt Hinton, Buddy

DeFranco, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, Lou Marini, Randy Brecker, Doc Severinsen, Henry Mancini, Ellis Marsalis, Michel Legrand and many more. He plays locally in his home base of Prescott, and also continues to play with Mike Vax and the Stan Kenton Alumni Orchestra.

Stan Sorenson, known for his playing prowess and effective teaching of students of all levels and musical genres, was inspired by a Herb Ellis recording his parents owned, and began guitar lessons at the age of eight. After seven years of private lessons, the Phoenix native began his professional career performing on the guitar in an

accordion-based pop-polka band and an all-original jazz-rock band.

Two years later Sorenson enrolled in the Phoenix College School of Music to explore and expand his music skills. At Phoenix College, he studied classical and jazz

guitar along with composition, theory, acoustics, photography and related art and music fields. He pursued a degree in jazz

performance at Arizona State University, and received private lessons from several

internationally renowned jazz guitarists including Joe Pass, Jeff Linsky and Joe Diorio.

Sorenson has performed locally and internationally, working with such greats as Nancy Wilson, Jimmy Smith, Rosemary

Clooney, Vic Damone, Jeffrey Osborne, The Fifth Dimension, Joey DeFrancesco and many others. He has played in the orchestras for many professional touring-company Broadway style musicals including “Zorba the Greek” (starring Anthony Quinn), “Annie,” “42nd Street,” “A Chorus Line,” “Aida” and “Hairspray.”

With these two accomplished musicians on stage, your enjoyment is guaranteed! Introduce someone new to jazz as a holiday gift! Kazimierz World Wine Bar is a casual venue with great food, wine and beverages. Kaz is located at 7137 E. Stetson Drive, Scottsdale. Admission to the public is $15 (FREE if you join Jazz in AZ at the party). JiA member rates apply.

News from Out & About

By Patricia Myers

Jazz fans can become aggravated when people around them are talking often during performances. I really want to ask them to stop chatting, or at least lower their voice levels, even when jazz is played in clubs or restaurants, which are more social settings than concert halls. Instead, I am appealing to “newbies” at jazz events to consider the live music event the same as attending a film or a play, and only talk during intermission or when the event has ended. The same goes for activating lighted cell phone screens at concerts, movies and live performances of any kind; that's inconsiderate, too.

The Buzz: Mesa Arts Center was one of 788 not-for-profit national, regional, state, and local organizations nationwide to receive an NEA Art Works grant. MAC received a $58,000 grant to support the Jazz from A to Z program. Jazz from A to Z is in its third year as a collaborative program between Mesa Arts Center; Mesa Public Schools and Arizona State University, also the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and leader Wynton Marsalis. Its goal is to enrich the historical and cultural knowledge of Mesa students and teachers with a cross-curricular study of both jazz and American history that includes live

Division, along with Gibb Mandish on vibraphone. The band took first place in that division, earning a slot at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September. Based on his audition recordings, resume, and recommendation letters, Rachbach was one of three drummers selected to participate in the 2012 Dave Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony at the University of the Pacific.

Rebecca de la Torre donated $500 to Jazz in AZ from her CD release party in September at the Rhythm Room. The vocalist-keyboardist said, “I want to help Jazz in AZ continue its education of young musicians in jazz, whether or not they go on to become professionals in jazz, pop music, film-score writing or another area of music.” She performs regularly at Warren's Jazz Bistro in Chandler.

Prescott drummer Frankie Chavez toured Australia with the Los Angeles-based Glenn Miller Orchestra last month

Final Bar: Hamza Abdul (Jerel Dillions), 64, drummer, Aug. 17 in Phoenix; Rob Schuh, 49, drummer, Oct. 6 in Phoenix; Warren Moyer, 88, Arizona Classic Jazz Society past president-festival director-photographer, Sept. 12 in Scottsdale; Von Freeman, 88, tenor saxophonist, Aug. 18 in Chicago; William “Bill Dickey,” 84, longtime Century Sky Room manager, founder of National Minority Junior Golf Association, Oct. 15 in Phoenix.

performances. The program is organized to reach more than 10,000 students and several hundred teachers, said Randall Vogel, MAC's director of theaters. NEA chairman Rocco Landesman stated, “The arts should be a part of everyday life. Whether it's seeing a performance, visiting a gallery, participating in an art class, or simply taking a walk around a neighborhood enhanced by public art, these grants are ensuring that, across the nation, the public is able to experience how art works.”

“Hot Chocolate Midnights," a bossa nova with music and lyrics by longtime Jazz in AZ member Bill Hammers, has been accepted by a large music library for use in movies and TV. Bill, owner of Altissimo Recording Studio in Scottsdale, has a master's degree in jazz studies from ASU and a master's in arranging from Berklee College of Music.

Musicians' News: The “new kid on the drums,” who performed recently at Sacred Grounds as part of Russell Schmidt's CD release event, is Tim Rachbach, who attended the Tucson Jazz Institute. He was part of the TJI Ellington band that competed in the 2012 Monterey NextGen Conglomerate Big Band
