This fall season will see new updates from Brooks (Adrenaline), Asics (2170) and Nike (Structure), their

best selling stability shoes. These updates happen about this time every year and most of the changes are not major so whatever shoe model you are currently using can usually transition you to the updated version with no problem. Asics has thrown a curve with their update by changing the 2170 to the 2000. It should work just as well as the 2170, but some people will still pine for their old favorite.

As I have said before, we can’t get married to our shoes because the manufactures keep changing the models. We can however, set up a running system that adapts to what we are trying to achieve. The shoe becomes the fi rst basic item we need to get the running process started. It has to fi t properly and be the right type of shoe for our specifi c running motion. We are all looking for ways to run better, but it is very diffi cult to get someone to change their running motion. Use a shoe that lets you run in a comfortable natural motion. You should not have to adapt your running style to a shoe; it should work with your existing gait. As your running skills change, you might also want to change your type of shoes. Lighter shoes do help you run faster but lighter also means the manufactures have taken features out of the shoe. Some of the minimalist shoes work well for some people so you might want to give them a try. Remember when you make big adjustments in your footwear, you have to let your body adjust to the changes.

Your training regimen is also a major link in your running system. If you are training for a specifi c event, you must mix

up your workouts to include speed and distance variations that relate to your event. Many people are fi tness runners but they also must remember to change up their routines to create a little muscle confusion to enhance their fi tness level. There are many good basic training routines available but for more in depth knowledge fi nd a good trainer. With the trainers generally come a group you can run with which will make you a better runner.

The other items in you running system are common sense items. Sports bras are essential items for women. The bra needs to be made of moisture management material and the wearer should remember the life of sports bras with average use is 6 months. All other apparel sox, shorts and tops need to be able to handle a lot of moisture also. Useful items like sunglasses, anti-chafi ng products, hats or headbands and compression wear can make your life a lot more pleasant when you are running. Many people use running watches, Garmin GPS watches and Polar Heart Rate Monitors to enhance there activities and give them more info on how they are doing.

The last two items of your running system is diet and sleep. Try to get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. The sleep will help your body repair itself and will also help you keep weight off. You should always try to eat a balance diet. Nutrient-dense foods provide substantial amounts of vitamins and minerals and relatively few calories, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, lean meat and fi sh, and whole grains and beans. All of the above items need to be involved in your running system. They all work together to help you stay healthy and happy.

Each year, injuries occur when runners are struck by vehicles because they were not seen. National Running Safety Month brings awareness to local drivers, and demonstrates to runners some simple tips and equipment that can help increase their visibility on the local roadways.

If just one person in each town across the country takes measures to make themselves more visible and more safe when they run at night, our efforts were well worth it.

National Running Safety Month is our opportunity to ensure that our fellow runners keep enjoying the sport for many years to come.

ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SCENIC 5K RACE COURSES IN FLORIDA!ABOUT THE ROBINSON PRESERVEWilliam Robinson and his son Parks Robinson owners of Fit2Run donated 6.4 million dollars worth of land, and the Manatee County purchased the rest to create this 497 acre preserve. There are 6 miles of kayak and canoeing trails, 12 acres of open water, 56 acres of marshland, 20 acres of uplands, 2 docks, a 500 foot long boardwalk, 6 bridges, 10 miles of coastal, 7 miles of shell walking/jogging trails, 2 miles of paved trails for the handicapped, fishing piers, bird observation locations, even a 56 foot observation tower. The waterway system was carved out of intertidal canals and the water is a mixture of the Manatee River and the Palma Sola Bay. “It is at places like this that people can get back in touch with nature” stated Charlie Hunsicker, Natural Resources Director for Manatee County.

Over-The-Counter Orthotics and Foot Supports…Are They Worth Considering?By Gene Ulishney, BS HPE, LMT, C.Ped.

Merriam Webster defines “Orthotic” as “a support or brace for weak or ineffective joints or muscles”.

Proper and properly made footwear is our best protection from the extreme forces that our feet have to contend with when running. But, what we are asking our shoes to do with a 3-dimensional foot, on, essentially, a 2-dimensional flat surface is usually more than they can handle on their own. Although a shoe has some contour underfoot, it is usually not enough to do an optimal job. While a shoe can offer excellent bracing around the foot and guidance and shock absorption throughout ground contact, foot orthotics shine as the foot’s foundation and base of support, enabling it to react and perform in a more optimal position, without excess and unwanted movement. Eliminating excess movement can reduce energy use and effort that may lead to compromised performance, fatigue and ultimately, overuse injuries. Considering that virtually every professional athlete wears some type of secondary foot-aid device, its usefulness is worth discussion. These high-level athletes depend on their feet for their livelihood. Injury prevention as well as performance enhancement enable these profes-sionals to get the most out of their careers. Granted, most have custom-made orthotics and are adjusted multiple times in order to get that “per-fect fit”. Interestingly, recent studies show that a good over-the-counter device works better and more often, right out of the box, than a custom device that cannot be adjusted. These published studies were done with both athletes and military personnel. I might also add that there are always varied results depending on the proficiency of the practitioner and their source of manufacture. When choosing a custom device, ask if adjustments can be made if needed. In my opinion, almost everyone can benefit from some type of replacement insert or orthotic. Individuals with faulty biomechanics will benefit from the added support and structure. On the other hand, efficient individuals can benefit by adding structure to delay and possibly eliminate the inevitable tissue and structural breakdown within their feet. This structural breakdown is the reason for our feet “growing” an aver-age of 2 ½ sizes during our adult life. Yes, wearing foot supports may just help keep our feet from growing old. Because reasons for wearing foot orthotics are never ending, I’m just going to list some of the advantages for their use, though each really deserves its own discussion. Indications for foot support and orthotic use may include, but are not limited to: performance enhancement; injury prevention; maintaining the structural integrity of the foot; shock absorption; alleviating shearing forces which cause blisters, calluses and corns; improve the structural position of the foot; helping eliminate structural and tissue pain throughout the whole kinetic chain from the foot all the way to the neck (a huge array of issues); improving posture; improving stability; providing more comfort; less strain; less fatigue; less plantar pressure; better efficiency; less overuse; and actually increase the useful life of footwear. The culmination of the above, and more, enables the runner to run better and longer with less pain and providing less excuses for becoming a couch potato. There are many devices that can help to more properly support the foot in shoes. Some that I feel, would be the first to consider are made by Spenco, Downunders and Superfeet. I believe these companies have made the best efforts to more naturally address the perfor-mance needs of the individual as well as the structural needs of the compromised foot. Spenco makes a wide array of foot care devices from metatarsal pads, heel pads, heel cups, arch support devices to a new full-length orthotic device called Spenco Total Support. Known for their superior, long-lasting cushioning materials, Spenco is first to combine such a cushioned product with an exceptionally deep heel cup, as well as varied features for excellent heel support, balance, natural arch support and mid-foot protection and support. Spenco Total Support can be worn right out of the box and will mold to the foot in a couple of days or so. This product is an excellent choice for individuals wanting or needing extra control, as well as offering superior cushioning underfoot for heel and forefoot pain and pressure issues. Total Supports are now offered in a Max version for those needing the most support possible, includ-ing heavier individuals, as well as a Thin version which was designed for minimal shoes and those with less volume such as casual and dress. Between the three, an individual can get about a custom a fit as possible from an over-the-counter device. Downunders is the lightest of the bunch, and first to address heel control as primary to supporting the foot. If the calcaneus is supported in its neutral, vertical position, the need for mid-tarsal support is greatly reduced. This helps eliminate the “hard bump” feel under the foot. Specifically designed for dynamic and more natural foot control with some cushioning, Downunders offers excellent metatarsal support and will custom mold to the foot within a few days of wearing. Downunders is an excellent choice for more competitive runners as well as those with heel and forefoot pain related to plantar fasciitis and neuroma. Both Total Supports and Downunders utilize “new school” biomechanical sup-port of the heel. Superfeet was the first serious over-the-counter foot support, hitting the market over 30 years ago. Originally designed for ski boots and hiking boots, it entered the athletic market with some success. The only foot support available for years, it became the staple until about 10 years ago when others woke up to the fact that foot supports both worked and were needed. Functioning very well, but mostly unchanged since inception, they may take some getting used to. Fairly lightweight with fair cushioning, Superfeet has yet to address the forefoot to any major extent. Still, this product remains among the elite in over-the-counter foot support devices. If an issue such as an ache or pain arises, first check the outsole and midsole of your shoes for excessive wear. If they are fairly new, have them analyzed by your local running store’s personnel for their correct category and function, relative to your foot and gait. If neither are found faulty, a good replacement insert, or over-the-counter orthotic should be tried. If your issues still persist, you should consult a good Po-diatrist. In the best interests of his patient, unless he finds an unusual foot abnormality that can only be addressed by a custom orthotic, a good Podiatrist will first make sure a store bought device has already been tested. Depending on the runner’s needs, the device will cost from about $10 for a heel cup or heel cushion to just under $40 for a full support. A custom orthotic will range from $275 to more than $600. This is all the more reason to first exhaust over-the-counter devices. If you are having issues such as aches and pains when you run or walk or have questions regarding shoes, socks and inserts and how they can help keep you running pain and injury-free, stop in your local running store and try some on. Your feet and body will love you for it.

What you can do to stay alive in triathlons In the past three weeks, there have been three deaths at three different events in the United States; all appear to be during the swim, but not drown-ing. USATriathlon currently has a blue ribbon panel that has been studying death occurrences in the sport to see what, if anything, Race Directors and USATriathlon can do to minimize triathletes killing themselves in competi-tion. I’d like to focus on some of the things we triathletes can do to help ourselves. In each of the three recent events, emergency personnel were readily available, and the athlete in distress was quickly pulled from the wa-ter with appropriate emergency responses, but to no avail.

As athletes, understanding these cardiac events frequently occur in the swim, here are some suggestions: 1. Arriveonracesitesufficientlyinadvanceofracestartsoyoucanhave time for a swim warm up; 2. If wearing a wetsuit (not normally an issue for most of our season), besureyouaren’twearingitforthefirsttime;warmup, andkeeptheupperpart unzipped after warm up until your wave starts; 3. At the very least, get your face and hands and feet wet prior to jump-ing into your wave start; even Olympic swimmers splash their faces to mini-mize the shock of initial entry; 4. If you are not a strong swimmer, position yourself so as to cause you theleastanxietyduringthefirst100metersoftherace.Inatleasttwoofthethree recent deaths, the cardiac event occurred almost immediately, not late in the swim; 5. If your race does not have a warm up area designated, ask your race director to provide one. Encourage all your friends to get in the water and warm up; it could save your life by equalizing your body temp with the wa-ter, while at the same time minimizing your stress level. It is your responsibility to make sure you are prepared for the event you are about to start; a race director can have all the kayaks, lifeguards, and medical staff on site, but those steps can’t prevent you from having a medi-cal issue that could prove harmful or deadly to you. If you haven’t had a cardiac stress test, get one. Wouldn’t you prefer to know you have a dor-mant but potentially deadly medical condition PRIOR to racing?

Look for the release of USATriathlon’s study/recommendations which should be released in the near future. Some of the best medical minds in the world are involved. In the meantime, take care of yourself, warm up prop-erly, swim in a low stress area of your wave if you are a weak swimmer, and give serious consideration to having a cardiac stress test; a simple annual physical won’t do it.
