Principal’s Message:
School Advisory Council :
At this time of year, we all tend to reflect on our successes, accomplishments, and
goals moving forward. As a school, we are very proud of the learning, the growth and
the many successes we have enjoyed over the past few months together. We have
grown in our academic achievements along with our mindsets, our work ethic and
skills, and our social/emotional awareness. We have worked towards building an en-
vironment in which our students, and our community at large, value one another for
all the gifts we have to share.
As we now move forward into the New Year, we will maintain our focus on building
the citizens of Selwyn to be conscientious, kind and engaged as we continue our
learning journeys together. We will honour the stories and experiences we each have
to contribute to our school community. We will look for more opportunities to give
back and support one another.
We look forward to working together in 2019!

Happy New Year parents and caregivers! Hope you all enjoyed some extra time with friends and family over the break!
Thank you for all your support over the first half of the school year. We really enjoyed your baking for the bake sale and the items you submitted for the Mystery Box raffle! There were some great things in those boxes!
Cookie dough sales were a success too! Ms Quinn’s 1/2 class sold the most cookie dough and were treated to cookies and hot chocolate during the last week of school.
We have a pizza day coming up January 25th so look for those forms and get your money in or don’t forget you can also buy online using TDSB Cash Online .https://tdsb.schoolcashonline.com/
Are you running out of labels? I just placed an order through Mabel’s Labels and we have our own Selwyn Fundraising Page with them. Selwyn gets a portion from each sale. Here’s the link to that. https://mabelslabels.com/c/?funId=5301&cur_website=base
Our next SAC meeting will be January 24th at 630pm in the library, the meetings don’t run longer than an hour and you can bring your children if you don’t have care or help. Come and see what we talk about, you may just learn something new.
Looking ahead there will be our annual Move-a-thon, where the child raise some money and get a chance to bust out moves and dance in support of their school. Last year DJ Spinja showed up to play the tunes for the kids….who knows who will show up this year! Date of the Move-a-thon TBD.
In June we will be having our Spring Carnival June 2nd! Lots of fun games, treats and activi-ties to enjoy as well as our BBQ! Stay tuned on how you can help us make this big money
You can follow us on Facebook for weekly updates sent from the school and all fun and im-portant information from the SAC

School News:
New Books Have Arrived! Our new books purchased from the proceeds from the book fair have ar-rived and are on the shelves waiting to be signed out. Thanks again for sup-porting the book fair and helping us raise money to purchase new books for Selwyn.
Forest of Reading is Coming Soon! The Forest of Reading® is Canada's largest recreational reading program! This initiative of the Ontario Library Association (OLA) offers seven reading programs to encourage a love of reading in people of all ages. The Forest helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, au-thors and illustrators. More than 270,000 readers participate annually from their School and/or Public Library. All Canadians are invited to participate via their local public library, school library, or individually.
Goals of the Forest of Reading
Love of reading: Create a meaningful experience for your readers and create exciting op-portunities for reluctant readers to create lifelong readers.
A proven head start: The results are in! Children who read for fun have higher literacy scores, have more success in science and math, and are more socially and civically engaged (Reading for Joy, P4E, 2011).
Reading Canadian: Help support and celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and il-lustrators by taking advantage of the Forest’s curated, all-Canadian reading lists for all ages and levels.
Selwyn has purchased books from the Blue Spruce, Silver Birch Express, Silver Birch Fic-tion and Silver Birch Non-Fiction programs for students to enjoy. We will read the texts and vote for our favourites. Stay tuned for information about this event.

Music:
Happy New Year everybody! This month, we will be starting up the recorder (grades 3, 4 & 5), and kindergarten and grade 1 & 2 students will be working with xylophone, glockenspiels and metallophones learning to read musical notation on the treble clef. After several successful holiday season performances, the Selwyn choir will be working on a selection of new songs to be performed sometime in the spring!

Math Information
Math is everywhere, and you can help your children make connections between what they are learning in school and everyday experiences at home and in the community, such as at the store, cooking at home, or managing money.
Here are some ideas about how math can be part of your regular day-to-day routine:
Math on TV – Watch educational television programs. Many offer web-sites with activities to do together, including free games, apps, math crafts, and songs.
Math at the grocery store – You can talk to your child about how to weigh fruit on a scale or how to estimate the total cost of items as you fill your cart.
• Math with money – Help your child manage money by creating a budget together or saving to make a special purchase. Or you could go shopping together and help with estimating the amount of a purchase, calculating the tax and checking the change.
Math in computer games – If your child enjoys the computer, introduce them to fun and educational web-based games and activities.
Math in the kitchen – Bake, cook and prepare food with your child. There are many great math opportunities in the kitchen, such as meas-uring ingredients.
Math games – Math puzzles and games can show that math is fun. They also require trial-and-error thinking, enhance numeracy and logi-cal thinking, and promote discussion.
By making math a priority and finding ways to help your child with math at home and in day-to-day life, you are helping to inspire a love of learning, and a better understanding of math. Ontario is committed to working with parents, teachers and students to focus on the fundamental skills and concepts of math to help improve students’ performance in math.

Late Reminder:
Please remember your visit to Selwyn School starts first at the office. In order to not
disrupt your child’s class, please remember to visit the office first. If your child is late,
please have your child sign in at the office. By signing in at the office, this eliminates
unnecessary calls home. Grades 1-3 will use the buddy system to class, grades 4-5 will
go up to class on their own.
