The Seoul exhibition of Tradition Transformed: Contemporary Korean

Ceramics opened to great success on December 22. Proposed by the U.S.

art promotion and planning group International Art & Artists (IA&A),

planned by Ewha Womans University emeritus professor Cho Chung

Hyun, and supported by the Korea Foundation, this exhibition

was held at five venues in Ireland, Spain, and the United

Kingdom between 2007 and 2011. Now returning to Korea,

this exhibition includes 58 ceramic works by 29 artists who

participated in the European exhibitions, together with

materials from those exhibitions that offer a glimpse

of what they achieved. (See p. 4 for more details.)

교류재단이 지원했던 본 전시는 2007년부터 2011년까지 아일랜드, 스페인, 영국 등 유럽 3개국 5

개 전시관에서 개최되었습니다. 이번 전시는 귀국보고전 형식으로 마련되어 유럽전에 참여했던

도예가 29명의 도자작품 58점과, 그 간의 성과를 한 눈에 볼 수 있도록 유럽 전시의 관련 자

Rabindranath Tagore (1861–1941) was a poet and thinker representative

of India. This exhibition, titled Tagore’s Travel in East Asia, includes a

collection of photos and relics from his travels to Eastern countries including

Myanmar, Sri Lanka, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.

New Year's Greetings from Embassies and Cultural Institutes

I would like to express my best and warmest wishes to the Korea Foundation and all its

friends and supporters for a happy and prosperous 2012. The KF Cultural Center plays a

very important role as an interface between Korean and foreign culture. The growing

global importance of Korea has brought a greater interest in its rich culture, language and traditions. At the same time,

other countries that have witnessed Korea’s rise wish to expose their culture to an eager and interested Korean audience. An

example of this came with Sweden’s 2011 cooperation with KFCC on the Swedish Contemporary Crafts Art Exhibition. I look

forward to many more interesting cultural projects at KFCC in the years to come and wish its staff all the best for 2012.

I wish the Korea Foundation prosperity and success in its 2012 efforts, and particularly in

our joint exhibition dedicated to the Great Italian Divas of the Twentieth Century.

The year's fourth "Meeting the World in Korea" cultural event was held on Saturday, Nov. 26 at Aloysius Elementary School.

Participants received introductions to the languages and culture of three countries and took part in activities to experience

each country's culture. These activities included a Malaysian bottle top game for the Malaysia group, a class in basic

flamenco steps for the Spain group, and an opportunity to make Australia maps out of bread for the Australia group. The

students who took part had lots of fun and showed plenty of interest.

Malaysian volunteer William Wong Xiu Shun said he would like to take part in another event in the future and recalled

how pleasant an experience it was spending time with students who were so filled with dreams and curiosity. Lee Jeong-

hwa, a fifth-grader who had a memorable time learning about and experiencing various world cultures, expressed her own

dream: "I definitely want to study and travel in Australia one day."

The Korean Culture Class held a kimchi making event on Nov. 26 at Jonggajip Kimchi

World in Seoul's Anguk neighborhood, offering foreigners a simple lesson in making

the Korean side dish. The event included opportunities to make kimchi and the spicy

broiled rice cake dish tteokbokki, taste makgeolli rice wine, look around the traditional

Gwangjang Market, and eat buchimgae pancakes, allowing participants to take time

out from the chilly weather to spend some warm time together. After trying out the

kimchi she made, Vivian Roberts said that she wanted to share it with her friends. She

added that it was a shame that making the kimchi with pre-prepared ingredients meant

that she could not learn the specific process of preparing it, but that she had still had a

fun and pleasant time.

11월 26일 토요일, 알로이시오 초등학교에서 ‘한국에서 만나는 세계’ 문화 행사가 열

렸습니다. 먼저 세 나라의 언어, 문화 등을 소개한 뒤 각국의 전통문화 체험 활동을

이어갔습니다. 말레이시아 팀의 병뚜껑으로 하는 공기놀이, 스페인 팀의 전통 춤 플

라멩코 기본 동작 배워보기, 호주 팀의 식빵으로 호주 지도 만들기 등 다채로운 체험

이 진행됐습니다. 참여한 학생들도 많은 재미와 관심을 보였습니다.

행사에 참가한 말레이시아 봉사자 윌리엄 씨는 “다음에도 이런 행사가 있다면 참여

하고 싶다”며 꿈도 많고 호기심도 많은 학생들과 함께한 시간이 행복했다고 말했습니

다. 세계의 다양한 문화를 배우고 체험하는 뜻깊은 시간을 보낸 5학년 이정화 양은

“나중에 꼭 호주에서 공부도 하고 여행도 해보고 싶다”며 자신의 꿈을 밝혔습니다.

외국인도 쉽게 김치 담그는 법을 배울 수 있는 한국문화교실의 ‘김치 담그기 행사’가 11월 26일 안국

동 종갓집 김치월드에서 진행되었습니다. 이번 행사에는 김치와 떡볶이 만들기, 막걸리 시음 외에도

한국 전통 재래시장인 광장시장을 둘러보며 부침개를 같이 맛보는 등 쌀쌀한 날씨에도 참가자들이 따

듯한 시간을 함께 보냈습니다. 직접 만든 김치를 시식해 본 후 친구와 함께 나누어 먹겠다는 비비안

씨는 “미리 준비된 재료로 김치를 만들다 보니 구체적인 과정을 알 수 없어 아쉬웠지만, 재미있고 행

복한 시간이었다”고 전했습니다.

A new year has begun. We asked the leaders of each team to tell us their New Year's resolutions for 2012 in 12 one-

syllable Korean characters or less. Though short, these messages offered us a glimpse at their determination to work

even harder on their activities as part of the Korea Foundation Volunteer Network.

새로운 해가 밝았습니다. 팀별 대표에게 2012년을 맞아 열두 자로 말하는 새해 각오를 들어보았습니다.

2011 Korea Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Special Winter Concert

“Friends of Korea Foundation”

A large audience was on hand to see the end-of-year concert organized

at the Concert Hall of Seoul Arts Center on Dec. 12, 2011, to mark the

20th anniversary of the Korea Foundation. Viewers were moved at

the friendship and love expressed in the Friends of Korea Foundation

performances, which were given by some of Korea's top performers who

have joined the Korea Foundation in realizing its vision of raising Korea's

profi le through art. The concert lasted for some time, but most audience

members stayed right through to the end, all the while applauding the

beautiful pieces and the passion of the performers.

Proceeds from the event were used to buy pianos for donation to the

Cheonan Multicultural Family Support Center and to Healthy Family

Support Centers. Thank you to all of you who attended!

내 정상급 연주자들이 참가하여 우정과 사랑을 담은 연주를 선사했고, 많은 분들이

감동을 받았습니다. 장시간의 음악회였지만 관객들 대부분이 끝까지 자리를 떠나지
