Chief‘s Chat

My dear Welspunites,

We are well into the New Financial Year with encouraging results from

the last quarter. However, with the rising raw material costs and

increasing pressure on exports we have to tighten our seat belts and have

to be more focused in our approach and strategy.

On the business front, the Saudi plant has commenced operations and will

cater to the buoyant markets of Middle East. Implementation of our L-

SAW plant at Anjar is on schedule, and is likely to be commissioned by the

end of Q1 FY12. We have also successfully completed the assets

acquisition of KOJO Worldwide and are in a tremendous position within

the hospitality industry to provide a “Total Soft Goods Solution” from

linens and towels to decorative bedding and window treatments of all

types.

Being the first issue of this year, we have dedicated it to our employees and

the big Welspun family. A successful company is often made of hard

working and diligent people. We believe inspired employees are the key to

taking an organization to greater heights. For this reason, Welspun gives

utmost importance to its Human Resources Development. To reiterate

this fact, our cover story this time presents a detailed perspective of the

various initiatives and programmes that has been undertaken by us for the

development and training of our employees.

Taking a step further in this regard is the launch of employee engagement

survey as part of our quest to become a respected organization. We have

partnered with the Indian arm of The Great Place to Work® Institute to

conduct this survey and help us gather your feedback. I urge each one of

you to participate in this survey and give us your feedback wholeheartedly

which in turn will help us to achieve our goal of being one of the most

respected organizations across the globe.

In another major achievement, Welspun USA has been ranked third in the

Top 15 Supplier Giants (USA) by Home Textiles Today magazine. It has

also bagged the number one position in Bath Towels category. Kudos to

the Welspun USA team and we hope it receives many more laurels. It was

a moment of glory when Welspun was bestowed with India Shining CSR

Award – “Outstanding CSR in Textile Sector” at the CSR Thought

Leadership Conclave hosted by Wockhardt. This award is special since it

is a unified effort from each and every one at Welspun.

In the events section we have captured the various celebrations that took

place across locations on International Women’s Day. The day was

celebrated with much enthusiasm and fervour.

Going forward, we are well on track with our business goals. The company

with its strong global footprint is all geared to capitalize on the emerging

opportunity. Last but not the least the overwhelming response to the

employee survey and frank and honest feedback makes Welspun a better

place to work. Hope you enjoy reading the issue as much as we putting it

together.

Cover Story

Being at the helm of Indian business for the past 25 years, Welspun Group has witnessed much change and challenges. When we glance back at

the first decade of the company’s existence, many of the things that seemed important then hardly matter now.

That was a generation living in the shadows of a colonial era: timid to take decisions, content to follow the regular paradigm of the past. India

was a country in a cage, society was rigid and business success largely belonged to those who broke the law or those who broke away from the

country. Then came the glorious period of liberalization, since then we have achieved much.

Today, there is a young India, confident to step out into the world, not as escapees from the IIT’s chasing the American dream, but as

entrepreneurs, businessmen and executives living the Indian vision. Welspun Group has ambitious expansion plans to increase the size and

volume of current businesses, as well as diversify into new segments like Infrastructure, Energy and others. To support this strategy, it is only

fitting that the company create a plan to attract, develop and retain the quality of human capital.

In order to retain these young talents and provide them the platform to think big and dream big, Welspun has offered various initiatives

focused on training and education for employees. Having tied up with educational institutions, as well as training programmes for the worker’s

wives, Welspun looks out for its own.

Going forward, Welspun has scripted a unique approach to employee welfare and growth. We intend on building a high performance

management culture across Group companies, backed by world-class processes operating on a value framework. The twin pillars of education

and systems & processes will enable us to identify high performance & high potential people and build future leadership.

To reach this objective, Welspun has introduced some key initiatives. The Group has embarked on a ‘Leadership Development journey’, with its

top talent group of around 200 members of middle and senior management set to undergo comprehensive programs to enhance their General

Management and Leadership Skills. Welspun have partnered with SP Jain Institute of Management and Research to run customized

Management Development Programs (MDP) & has partnered with Idiscoveri Education to provide specific leadership development programs.

Around 120 people are undergoing the MDP and approximately 70 people are already part of Leadership programs.

To nurture the ‘Gen-Next’ Welspun has also started a Talent Development programme aimed at building a leadership pipeline that will create

quality leaders to manage our growth and diversification plans. An exercise is underway for all high potential and key talent members for whom

Individual Development plans (IDPs) have been drawn up across all India locations. Around 200 and more IDPs have been designed across all

business and locations.

A Balanced Scorecard based Performance Management System has been put in place. All eligible employees undergo training programs to

build their skills for ‘conducting appraisal discussions’. To check on the effectiveness of the PMS process, regular surveys are conducted.

Different job aids and wizards are created to help employees understand the appraisal process at Welspun.

The thrust of Learning & Development efforts has been skill enhancement and capability building. Hence, while at the business level the

emphasis has been more on technical training, at the Group level a common training curriculum has been designed under the Corporate

University framework, where around 30 different titles of programs have been designed for the India employees and we have till date

completed 1000 mandays of training.

Welspun to be benchmarked for high quality, high productivity, manufacturing speed, and flexibility. To meet this goal, capability building

around technical areas has been initiated for workmen, supervisory staff and managers, initiating Technical training certification. Various

committees have been formed at the plant/business levels, which are in process of designing Skill matrix as well as technical training modules

for technical capability building at the various businesses. As of today, approximately 80 employees across Welspun locations have been

certified as internal technical trainers. Welspun has partnered with NTTF a renowned technical institute for workmen development, with the

NTTF satellite centre set to be operational in a few months. Currently, training systems are being developed by technical training committee

members which will help in addressing the business needs.

As another initiative to emphasize the organization’s focus on continued education, Welspun employees are given an opportunity to enroll

themselves into the certification courses offered by All India Management Association (AIMA). Employees can avail of 1 year certificate courses

on varied areas of general management, to encourage them to pursue higher studies while continuing work with the Group. The Company pays

the entire course fee on behalf of the interested staff and recovers the same from the salary in the form of fixed EMIs per month. This has been

significantly successful with more than 200 people already enrolled for the program till date.

Other initiatives for employee engagement like reward and recognition programs (Excellence Awards for the group launched), online libraries,

and Employee engagement framework for the Corporate teams have been designed and deployed.

With various acquisitions in process, the broad integration roadmaps for these are another focus area for the Human Capital team. For

example, the MSK Integration Plan and Roadmap has been put in place. The various Welspun manufacturing facilities in USA, Mexico, Portugal,

UK are also being brought under a common fold in terms of Welspun systems and processes, thus bringing in a common integrated cultural

dimension to all locations.

In order to build a strong middle management team over the next 5 years, the Welspun group has decided to hire aggressively from top B

Schools across the country. As a pilot, a team of 18 lateral Management graduates have been brought on board. They are joining us for our

different businesses across the country. Over the next 5 years, we will raise the numbers of such hires, year on year, with an aim to bring about

250 such top talents into middle management positions.

As a global manufacturing organization, it is key for us to continuously have a strong pipeline of top class engineers entering our system and

growing with us. WINGS is the comprehensive Graduate Engineer Trainee on-boarding program, which ensures that we hire, train and retain

the GETs we bring on board.

The Group overall is focused on making its people ambitious, aggressive, dynamic, flexible, and resilient and with an entrepreneurial bent of

mind, to act as change agents to catapult it forward on its growth trajectory. Our intent is to help everyone gain exposure to the latest and best

technology, challenging assignments, exciting career and learning opportunities with value adding experiences.

M U DR A S FOR GOOD HEALTH

YOG MUDRAS :

The physical body is composed of five elements, which are fused with each other in different proportions, to

form each human body. These five elements are fire, air, space (ether), earth, and water. The thumb represents

fire, the index finger represents air, the middle finger represents space, the ring finger represents earth, and the

little finger represents water. When these five elements are present in fixed proportion, the body remains

healthy; but if there is the slightest imbalance in these elements, it can upset our immune system and cause

various ailments. The ancient Yogis explained how, with bringing together the fingers in various permutations

and combinations, the elements could be manipulated in the physical body. This balancing of the tension and

redirection of the internal energy affects the changes in veins, tendons, glands, and sensory organs to bring the

body back to a healthy state.

Some important tips on Mudras

— Mudra is a very exact and scientific yogic function by which one can develop or even change, one's internal and external

dispositions viz. mental (anger, emotional disturbance, intelligence etc.), spiritual (concentration, meditation) or physical (in

various diseases, illnesses).

— Mudras can bring miraculous mental, spiritual and physical changes and improvements in our body. They help in quickly

balancing the elements of the body.

— Mudras effect changes in veins, tendons, glands and sense organs.

— Mudras need no prior preparation. They can be done (mostly but with exceptions) at any time, anywhere and under virtually

any circumstances.

— They are like literal remote control switches bringing quick and effective changes.

— They help bring about permanent changes.

— A constant practice of Mudras can stop or slow down the destructive changes in the human body. It can help develop a

virtuous, socially amiable, non-violent, pious and courteous disposition.

— Some of the Mudras can balance the elements of the body within 45 minutes; some react within a few seconds on the human

body.

— Mudras awaken the cosmic energy and help unite the atma (soul) with the Paramatama (the cosmic soul).

When to do?

— Can be practiced at all times while sitting, lying, standing, walking or even talking.

— For good results should be practiced for 24 minutes continuously. Can be practiced for 4-5 minutes also at one time.

Mudra Vigyan is an entirely distinct and independent branch of yoga. This is the science of finger postures,

based on Yoga of elements that go to create the human body. The science that can help raise the human being

to achieve almost divine powers and keep the body perfectly fit. Like any Yoga, Mudras are nature’s way of

healing, as intended by nature and therefore, the mandates of nature are to be followed. Some Mudras do give

instant relief, but for permanent and long-term gains they should be done with sincerity and belief.According to the Yoga science five elements are referred to the five building blocks that go into the formation of

any living body. Several ancient health systems are based on the concept of the balance of the five elements.

According to Ayurveda and metaphysics affirm that distortion or impairment of the 5 elements creates outer

disturbance and inner sickness in the body.

Being Progressive

I had been propagating the theory of being +ve for quite some time - even before I read "The Secret", however after I heard one of my friends, the great motivational speaker, Suresh Semwal from Thinkinc (http://www.successcorners.com) speak on "Being progressive and not only being positive", I could realize the enormous difference in approach. Frankly speaking, a plain "Being Positive" is like a great illusionary who is living in a word full of hope BUT without a concrete action plan. On the other hand a progressive person is a +ve thinker with a concrete action plan to substantiate his thoughts. He is not leaving everything on the mercy of nature and astrologers but is willing to soil his hands and sweat it out.

I had written the following article some time back and it was not published anywhere, so I thought of sharing the same with you guys.

ver wondered what could be the difference between a well qualified, experienced but a not so successful person v/s a not so well qualified, Eexperienced but a highly successful person. One difference could be opportunity another could be sheer luck, but the most important difference is having a ‘+ve and progressive frame of mind’.

As Robin S. Sharma, the famous author of “The Monk who sold his Ferrari” writes “You are what you think you are”. Having a progressive frame of mind, can be the single most important catalyst that can convert an idea into reality. Come to think of it, we all know the power of being +ve, but how often do we really practice it. Yes, practice +ve flow of energy within our selves, as a result within our whole organization.

The choice is ours, do we really want to ‘simply exist’ or ‘truly live’. Do we want to ‘simply survive or really thrive’. Moreover a -ve frame of mind is like a contagious disease. A -ve person would not only brood himself psychologically, but he/she would get sadistic pleasure by injecting the same feeling into his/her peers/subordinates as well.

A progressive frame of mind, would consider stumbling blocks as a stepping stone & problems as an opportunities to learn and improvise further. As Doctors world over preach, if the patient has a will power and a +ve frame of mind, he/she can be cured with medicines at its most effective.

The argument from some of my friends would be, it is very easy to preach but difficult to practice. Agreed, but it is not impossible….

Here are some practical tips, on how to be more progressive !!

Always look at the ‘relevance’ of any problem as Pramod Batra, the famous Management consultant puts it, “majority of the issues that we encounter are so small in terms of its overall effect on us, that it is useless to spend more time brooding on them”. The concept of KFP (kya firk padta hai) v/s BFP (bahut firk padta hai). We would notice that majority of our day-to-day problems would cease to exist.

Just like any other ritual, practice a mantra “I am progressive & have only +ve vibes emitting from my body and soul”. You will be surprised on the effect of this simple mantra on you. The only catch is … you have to say it with utmost belief, sincerity and conviction and you should be sitting on a chair with your spine straight and gaze at an object that is higher than your eye-sight.

Start analyzing a real problem clinically - Look at the problem from a consultant / a third person point of view, who has been given this problem in order to suggest possible valid solutions & then follow the steps mentioned below :-

- Define the problem on a piece of paper in its entire state.- Write down the names of all the people involved / connected / influenced (or who can be affected because of the problem)- Find out a root-cause analysis (fish-bone or Ishikawa analysis) and list down all probable causes.- Do an is-is & is-not analysis, to rule out any imaginary causes.- Do a Pareto analysis, to prioritize the major causes.- Find out probable options, against each major cause.- Carry out the options that are practical and feasible.

Refrain from becoming part of a peer group that speaks ill of any person or organization or group.

Take continuous feedback from your subordinates, peers and superiors and take corrective measures if required.

Look at some one who is less fortunate to realize the importance of what we have. As a popular saying goes “I was complaining of having no shoes until I came across a person who had no feet”.

Start practicing Yoga.

Make it a habit to read motivational books.

Put positive posters in your home and work place.

Being progressive is a psychological phenomenon, which can be achieved consciously through “practice and strong conviction” of our thought process that really makes us a +ve, progressive & thereafter a more sought after person.

Because remember….Real failures are only the results of an effort that we put in & True tragedies are lessons. But, our character is shaped not through life’s easiest experiences but during life’s ‘toughest’ ones.

Future Technology

Not too many years down the road people will drive their future car inside their future city andthen go back to their future home and tell their

future robots what needs to be done. In the nearfuture, wireless technology and nanotechnology will have taken over the world.

Nano neural networks will be the standard. Our brains will be connected directly to this vast future computer technology that has been

miniaturized, broadened and made to be more powerful. Sound like science fiction?

Just by thinking, they can move robotic arms. Microelectrodes placed in different parts of the brain allow people with muscular dystrophy and

other disorders to move cursors and type keys rather adeptly on a computer.

No longer are these experiments done with rats, monkeys or the episode of "House" where a patient move a cursor for "yes" or "no" by

thinking about it. There is so much future computer technology that most people don't know about that is happening right now, right under

our noses.

And, so what does this bode for 5, 10, or 20 years from now? Trends in future computer technology dictate that microchips, processors, hard

drives and all computer components will get smaller.

WiFi, MiFi and other Fi's Foes and Fums will take over the marketplace and become common. Just by thinking we will be able to connect with

networks most likely aided by small electronic devices that we keep on us at all times. But a step beyond this will be the elimination of these

small electronic cell phone, palm pilot, laptop, DS, GPS, facial recognition devices that have been rolled into one. Networks will

be so widespread that there will be no need to carry small handheld devices.

Just by thinking about log ons, passwords, text, photos, music and whatever our heads hold we'll be able

to navigate, communicate socially from miles away, Tweet just by thinking and do work on the run.

Future computer technology will allow people who have lost the use of their limbs to use

robotics as well as tap into these same networks empowering disabled people like never

before.

Future computer technology will help solve many medical problems such as dyslexia and

ADHD by reinterpreting sensory data and modulating brain activity. A whole host of other

medical illnesses and conditions will be cured or managed by future software controlling dosages

of medicine such as those with diabetes now experience, but the scope of the conditions healed or

managed will be much more vast.

Future computer software will know when to stimulate neurons, how much, and will communicate with

nanorobots that perform microscopic surgery or deliver medicine to very small, specific areas of the

body.

The future of computer technology is a very bright one indeed. The current trends tell us this, as

well as the research and development that is happening at lightning pace. The children today

will have a whole new technological world waiting for them tomorrow. And tomorrow isn't

that far away.
