American Red Cross – Health and Safety Course Catalog As the leader in health and safety training for more than 90 years, the American Red Cross is today’s premier provider of first aid, CPR, water safety, swimming lessons, caregiving training, babysitter’s training and other health and safety education programs. Developed in conjunction with medical and aquatics experts, each program delivers the latest information and lifesaving techniques.

What’s new about Health & Safety Training? Beginning January 2011, many of our training books and skills cards are available online. Visit www.oregonredcross.org/classmaterials where you can select either “Workplaces, Schools, and Individuals” (for Lay Responders) or “Professional Rescuers” to download and print materials for your reference.

Frequently Asked Questions – Will having free digital materials change how courses are taught?

• Course outline and instruction methods will remain the same. Will students still receive books in class?

• Take home materials will no longer be provided in class – you can print books via the above URL and bring them to class or purchase a book either before or in class.

How much will books cost? • Lay Responder books cost $3 and Professional Rescuer books $13.

When will this start? • February 1

st in the Portland metropolitan area and March 1

st for other

locations around Oregon. Is that a requirement for training?

• Library sets will be available for reference in class and therefore a book purchase is not required; however, many students will want a copy for their reference and so printing or purchasing a book is recommended.

What about youth classes? • This change does not impact youth courses.

In Every City, In Every Community, the Red Cross is There Each year, victims of some 70,000 disasters turn to the Red Cross for help. Through more than 800 locally supported chapters, 15 million people gain the skills they need to prepare for and respond to emergencies in their workplaces, homes, schools and communities. Some 4 million people give blood—the gift of life—through the Red Cross, making it the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The Red Cross helps thousands of U.S. service members stay connected to their families when separated by military duty. As part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, a global network of 181 national societies, the Red Cross helps restore hope and dignity to the world's most vulnerable people. All of these essential services are made possible by the voluntary services, blood and tissue donations, and financial support of people around the world.

There are many ways to support the American Red Cross…

• You can give of your time – instructor training information is on pages 25-26 • You may be able to donate blood • You can donate financially • You support the Red Cross through our health & safety trainings

However you offer your support, you become part of what enables the American Red Cross to

Prevent, Prepare for, and Respond to Disaster Around the Block, Around the Nation, and Around the World

Special courses offered only in certain locations are described on location pages.* Standard First Aid with CPR/AED – Adult Could you operate an Automated External Defibrillator if a friend, family member or someone nearby was suffering from cardiac arrest? Wilderness First Aid This 16 hour course is for those who work, live or play in remote areas – away from the usual EMS service. Even though the emergency workers near these areas may be trained to search for and rescue those in need, there may be a delay in the notification of assistance, the time required to get to the patient, or in moving the patient to more advanced treatment. It expands on the concepts in the Standard First Aid course to give more detailed information and hands on skills practice. Basic first aid skills are covered, making this course appropriate for anyone regardless of experience level. A minimum age of 15 is recommended for participants due to the serious nature of the course and scenarios.

Frequently Asked Questions Will I receive a confirmation – and can I get a receipt? You will receive a class confirmation/receipt. If you register online, you will receive an email confirmation. Remember to verify the date and time of your training session as it appears on your confirmation. What if I’m late to class? Since the core of most programs is taught at the beginning of class, you won’t want to miss a minute. In order to maximize training time, session start times are firm, so please plan to arrive 15 minutes early. If you arrive more than 5 minutes late you may not be permitted into the class; you will have to reschedule and a rescheduling fee will be assessed. No refunds or credits are possible for “no shows”. Can I take a class if I have a medical condition or a special educational need? We will work with you to accommodate medical conditions or disabilities as much as possible, although certification requirements vary among classes. For more information please call class registration via your local chapter phone number, 1-800-991-9515 or 503-280-1440. You can also email [email protected]. Can I transfer or cancel a class? Yes – rescheduling and cancellation fees apply. All fees owed for class changes must be paid at time of transaction. See table for additional information.

Cancellation or reschedule occurs Amount refunded

per student request:

within 2 weeks prior to class 90% of course fee

within 1 week prior to class 75% of course fee

within 2 days prior to class 50% of course fee

day of or after the class 0% of course fee

due to low enrollment or inclement weather:

any length of notice 100% of course fee

Classes with low enrollment (fewer than 5 students) may be canceled. If the Red Cross cancels a class, we will promptly notify you. Every effort will be made to reschedule your training. If this is not possible, you will receive a full refund.

Can lost certificates be replaced? We can send you replacement certificates as long as your certification is still valid. Simply provide the course name, location and completion dates when making your request. A $5.00 processing fee will be assessed for each replacement certificate issued. How actively must I participate in class? You’ll learn more – and have more fun – by participating as much as possible. Most classes include videos, group discussions and skills practice that require you to participate in hands-on activities. Please wear comfortable non-restrictive clothing because some of the skills practice takes place on the floor. To receive certification, you must attend all class sessions and pass both skills and written testing. Can I get sick using a manikin? CPR training with manikins is a safe and common practice. According to the Centers for Disease Control, there has never been a reported case of any infectious disease transmitted through the use of CPR manikins. The American Red Cross trains nearly 12 million people annually in lifesaving skills and follows widely accepted guidelines for cleaning and decontaminating training manikins to reduce the risk of disease transmission. To minimize your risk even further, you should practice good personal hygiene (i.e. frequent hand washing) and follow basic health precautions — especially if you have a condition that would increase the risk of exposure to infection for yourself or other participants. If you are sick and training cannot be postponed, you can call our office ahead of time and request your own manikin. Your manikin will not be used by anyone else until it has been cleaned according to the recommended end-of-class decontamination procedures. Please request your own manikin if you have:

• An acute condition, such as a cold, sore throat or cuts and sores on your hands or around your mouth. • A condition that makes you unusually likely to get an infection. Anti-Discrimination Policy No person will be excluded from service or classes because of race, ethnic origin, religion, handicap, gender or sexual orientation.

When Seconds Count, You Could

Save a Life.

The American Red Cross has a vision of one person in

every household being trained in First Aid and CPR

lifesaving skills, and all Americans being within four

minutes of an AED and someone trained to use it in

the event of sudden cardiac arrest.

The Southern Oregon Chapter can assist you in every

phase of creating an AED program, including:

Facilitating the purchase of AEDs & accessories

Training in CPR, first aid and AED skills

Providing information on developing or upgrading

emergency procedures

With the latest generation of automated external

defibrillators (AEDs) and training from the Southern

Oregon Chapter, more everyday people are prepared to

care for victims of sudden cardiac arrest in our

community.

The First Aid Service Team (FAST) is a youth-led volunteer program sponsored by the Or-

egon Pacific Chapter. FAST members provide quality first response First Aid, CPR and AED services by staffing first aid stations at over 50 community events per year. In addition to staff-ing First Aid stations, members promote FAST at schools and career fairs, organize communi-ty service projects, and teach Health & Safety

classes to elementary-aged children.

Members receive Red Cross training in CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer,

Standard First Aid, and Universal Precautions for Bloodborne Pathogens. Participation in

FAST allows members to network with peers, complete community service requirements, and

often work alongside health and medical professionals. Members possess lifelong,

marketable skills that are valuable for work and college applications.

FAST is open to any youth (ages 14 to 20) and adult mentors (ages 21+) with the initiative to provide valuable community services to Lane

County. No prior experience is necessary. Call the Oregon Pacific Chapter at

541-344-5244 for details.

Do you: Need community service hours for school?

Have a desire to help your community? Want to save lives?

Want to meet new friends? Want to learn valuable job skills?

FAST may be just what you need!

What is FAST?

Nearly every two seconds someone in America needs a blood or blood product transfusion. This

blood can only come as a gift from volunteer blood donors like you ― there simply is no

substitute. Because blood has a limited shelf life, the community blood supply must constantly be replenished to meet patients’ needs. To meet patient needs, the region strives to collect nearly 5,000 whole blood donations and more than 500

platelet products each week.

Whether at a blood drive in a community or at a donation center in the city, every one of our

donors plays an integral role in the delivery of modern healthcare. Many diseases, surgeries and conditions require blood transfusions in

order for treatments to be successful and recovery to be possible.

Please Make an Appointment Today

To find blood donation sites and hours in your area, please call 1-800-Give Life or visit us at

www.nwblood.redcross.org

To sponsor a blood drive, please contact your local chapter or call (503) 528-5929 in the Portland area.

The Red Cross is here. When disaster struck a little boy and his family, someone was there, providing shelter, a hot meal, a teddy bear, and a hug. But this Red Cross volunteer is not the only hero in this picture. Behind her are Oregonians just like you, who generously donate to their local chapter of

the American Red Cross. You can’t always be there for a child or family in need. But you can guarantee that someone will.
