The unique high school format

of 6 bowlers, with the dropping of

the lowest score in each game

always proves to be interesting.

This year did not disappoint.

The team winners were

Sayreville High School for the

boys and for the fourth champi-

onship in a row, Brick Township

High School for the girls.

Both teams did not lead after the

first game. Sayreville was in sev-

enth place with a 1,047 set. The

leader after the first game was

Brick Township with a 1,138

game, followed by Toms River

North’s 1,133 and then Howell

Township 1,111 and 1,103.

Sayreville with a two game total

of 2,146 bowled better in the sec-

ond game but still trailed

Howell’s 2,265, Toms River

North’s 2,240, Brick’s 2,228,

Woodbridge 2,213. In the last

game however two teams made a

charge and Sayreville bowled an

with a 3,217, Toms River North –

3,216, Woodbridge – 3,214, Brick

Twp – 3,161 and Jackson with a

3,160.

the first game were Howell

Township with a 1,025 and Brick

Memorial’s 1,020. After the sec-

ond game Howell remained ahead

with a 2,008 while Brick Twp

moved into second at 1,959 with

Brick Memorial third at 1,956 fol-

lowed by North Brunswick,

action as well. Brick Memorial’s

Tyler Wolfe of Manasquan had a

279 game and Brick Township’s

Bryan Figula had a 278. In the

three game series however Mike

Chundak of Woodbridge bowled

TOKYO, Japan – Finnish native

Mika Koivuniemi won his second

Round1 Japan Cup and a $71,700

first prize at Round1 Stadium

Diver City Tokyo Plaza Bowling

Center with a 268-164 victory over

Japan’s Yoshihiro Kaji, denying

Kaji’s bid to become the first

Japanese player

to win the event

in 24 years.

The 45-year-

old Koivuniemi,

wearing glasses

for the first time

in a champi-

onship round,

started the title

match with eight

strikes before a

10 pin in the

ninth frame

ended his bid for

a 300 game. The finals aired on

ESPN.

“I got glasses about two years

ago and started to practice with

them, but I didn't like them at all,”

the Hartland, Mich., resident said.

“I bowled a couple of games in the

180s with them on, so I took them

off and shot a 300 game. After that

I didn’t even try them again in

competition. I just wore them

when I was driving at night.

“I told my wife I would start

wearing them after I won my 10th

title, but after I screwed up a cou-

ple of times during the World

Series of Bowling, I decided to try

them again and they felt ok. So I

decided to test my luck and I

bowled with them on in Japan.

“It worked,” he said with a

laugh.

Kaji started the title match with

back-to-back open frames and

never had a chance after that.

Takeo Sakai

(1988) and

K e n

T a n i g u c h i

(1985) are the

only Japanese

bowlers who

have won the

Japan Cup.

Koivuniemi

made it into

the champi-

onship match

by winning a

sudden death

roll-off against reigning PBA

Player of the Year Sean Rash of

Montgomery, Ill., in one of the sea-

son’s most exciting matches. Rash

converted the 2-10 split in the ninth

frame and threw three strikes in the

10th to force Koivuniemi to mark

in his 10th frame for the winner.

Koivuniemi, however, left the 4-

9 split and got one pin for a 223-

223 tie. In the one-ball sudden

death roll-off, both players threw

strikes on their first two shots, and

both left a single pin on their third

attempts before Koivuniemi struck

while Rash left a 9 pin on their

fourth shots.

SWEDEN’S JESPER SVENSSON WINS BALLMASTER OPEN,

BILL O’NEILL TAKES THIRD PLACESweden’s Jesper Svensson defeated Finland’s Pasi Uotila, 206-163, Sunday to win the Brunswick

Ballmaster Open at Tali Bowl in Helsinki, Finland. The tournament was the first WTBA-PBA

International Tour event of 2013, the opening event on the European Bowling Tour’s 2013 calendar, and

a WTBA World Bowling Tour points event.

Recently-crowned Alka Seltzer Plus Cold Cheetah Champion Bill O’Neill of Langhorne, Pa., finished

third, the highest finish for a PBA Tour member, losing to Uotila in the semifinal match, 237-233. Uotila

defeated Sweden’s Peter Hellström in the opening match of the stepladder finals, 213-180.

Because Svensson, the 17-year-old European Youth champion, is not a PBA member, no PBA

International title was awarded in the event.
