    The Long Island

    G e n e r a t i o n s

    Bowling Tour(LIGBT) hosted its

    first weekend major

    event over

    Thanksgiving at

    AMF Babylon.

    More than 350

    entries competed

    for $21,000 in prize

    money. The scratch

    title went to Brian

    Ziesig of Levittown

    who earned $3,000

for his first LIGBT victory. The

    210 and under handicap champion

    was Mack Oakman of Wheatly

Heights who won $1,500 for his

first LIGBT title.Brians road to his title started in

Round 2 of the finals as he earned

1 bye for leading the Sunday noon

squad with a 749. Brian made an

early statement in the finals by

    shooting a 240 in Round 2 and

came back with a 223 in Round 3.

But Brian saved his finest perform-

    ance for the Shootout Round

where he started with 6 consecu-

tive strikes and finished with a 257

    game.

    Finishing second was Steve

    Chiarella of Staten Island rolling

    a 240 and earning $1,500. The

third place finisher was top senior

bowler, Jim Hosier of New Jersey posting a 223 game and taking

    home $1,000. Finishing up the

final four was John Conroy of

    Mahopac who earned

    $700 for his 207

    game. The only 300 of

the tournament wasshot by Anthony Pepe

    of Queens posting his

    perfect game in the

    Sunday 2pm squad.

    The 210 and under

    handicap event contin-

    ued its amazing growth

    as 185 entries were

    recorded which created

    a prize fund exceeding

    $7,800. Mack Oakman

got to stand in the win-

ners circle having rolled a 233

    game, with handicap, getting a

spare and eight in the tenth frame,

to lock out his closest competitor

Dave Soren of Long Beach whoput up a 219, with handicap. Dave,

    who shot the highest qualifying

series of the tournament, posting a

798 set, with handicap and bonus

pins, earned $750 for his second

    place finish.

Rounding out the 210 and under

    shootout was Ed Dougherty of

    Patchogue collecting $400 with a

210 game and Scott Shultz of

Orlando, FL taking home $300 for

    his 189 game. A total of 46

with 289, Todd Skidmore 279, Mike McGlynn 289,

Gary Galatai, Bart Penna, John Smisek, and John

    San Diegos Mike

    DeVaney salvaged his

    bowling career when he

    defeated Australias two-

    handed bowler Jason

    Belmonte, 189-170, to

    win the Professional

    Bowlers Associations

    Scorpion Championship

    at Thunderbowl Lanes.

    In the Womens

    Scorpion Championship

    that also aired on ESPN,

    Shannon Pluhowsky of

    Phoenix defeated Liz

    Johnson of Cheektowaga,

    N.Y., 192-177, for back-

    to-back PBA Womens

    Series victories.

DeVaney, a 36-year-old journey-man, won his second career PBA

Tour title in a contest that saved him

a career. Strikes in the eighth and

ninth frames, followed by a spare

and strike in the 10th, rallied

    DeVaney to victory over Australias

    unique bowling sensation.

Along with a $25,000 first prize,

DeVaney also locked up an exemp-

tion to bowl on the Lumber

Liquidators PBA Tour for the 2010-

11 season and he earned a spot in

    the end-of-season PBA Experience

    Showdown.

I came in (to the PBA World

Series of Bowling) with all the pres-

sure in the world, DeVaney con-fessed after his win.

Bowling for a living is a difficult

thing to do. This is a real blessing

for me. Im extremely fortunate to

    win this tournament.

Younger bowlers like Sean andJason arent used to bowling at a

    190 pace, DeVaney said. Theyre

    always looking for 230s. Theyre

not used to bowling low games. I

was happy shooting a 190, and if

they beat me, they beat me. I knew

from the first ball I threw that my

scores werent going to be very

good, so I just wanted to throw 10

good shots and leave it out there.

I knew I was going to have to

grind it out. I think I can play that

game pretty well. Today the result

    was awesome, DeVaney said. To

have things go my way today was a

    surprise.

DeVaney trailed Rash by 35 pinsafter six frames, but Rash opened

    his final four frames while

    DeVaney threw four strikes and

    converted a pair of seven-count

    spares to complete his comeback

    victory. The title match

    was similar. Belmonte

had a 16-pin lead after six

    frames, but opened in the

    eighth and 10th frames

    while DeVaney filled his

    final four frames.

    Belmonte won his berth

in the title match with a

    222-175 win over new-

    comer Thomas

    Smallwood of Saginaw,

    Mich., in the semifinal

    round. Belmonte opened

in the first frame, but then

threw six strikes in a row

    to ruin Smallwoods tele-

    vision debut.

    In the Womens

    Scorpion Championship,

Pluhowsky built a 39-pin lead afterseven frames and survived open

frames of her own in the ninth and

10th frames to become the first

    PBA Womens Series competitor to

    win three titles.

    Im glad there werent many

more frames. Im not sure what

    would have happened, Pluhowsky

said. It was a bad ending for the

great time I had at the World Series.

    I was fortunate to win.

Johnson, with a strike in the ninth

frame, could have won with a dou-

ble in the 10th frame, but she left

the 3-6 on her first attempt in the

    final frame.

Because Pluhowsky, Johnson andKelly Kulick had previously won

titles to qualify for the end-of-

    season PBA Womens Series

    Showdown, Feldman earned a berth

    based upon her fourth-place finish.

LEVITTOWN, NY Brian Ziesig earned top honors

in the Thursday Expressway Glass Trios League fir-

ing perfect with a 300 then almost again with a 276

for the high series of 814. Al Spano and Phil Lambert

each hit perfection as well tossing a 300 game.

Ed Stadtlander left one standing pitching a 299 fol-

lowed by John Donnarumma rolling 290-775, Carl

Meinhardt 289, Ziggy Ziesig 278-276, Rob Grexer

279-278, Lorraine Morante 289, and Steve Silverman

    with a 287 game.

    2 SPORTS REPORTER December 16 - 22, 2009

Every time of the year is gift

time, and the number one on

almost every bowler's gift list is

    a bowling ball, for relatives,

    friends and themselves.

A bowling ball used to be a

    lifetime thing with a lifetime

    guarantee, and often passed on

to others. It was never tossed

away, and it still rates high in

    objects stored away in closets,

    garages, attics and basements.

What should a bowler look for

in a bowling ball? What brand?

    What color? What weight?

What color? A bowling ball is a

    marvel of thought, research and

    construction. And the answers

are as varied as the people who

    roll them.

    Long before it became com-

mon for bowlers to have more

than a handy bowling ball or

    two, Bob Strampe often noted,

    "If pro bowlers could carry

them, they'd have a differentball for every lane."

    Today's pro bowlers come

close and most are experts on

    bowling balls and grips, their

own and every ball that arises

    from the experience and imagi-

nation of those who devote their

lives to coming up with the

    almost impossible---the perfect

    bowling ball.

    All bowling balls approved by

the USBC are fine, but they are

    different. The shells, outer sur-

faces, vary in hardness, as does

the composition of the ball, and

    the inner weight blocks.

You don't have to know all theplus and minus factors of every

ball but you should obtain the

advice of someone who does so

    you can best improve your

    game.

It's not rocket science; it is

    bowling science.

The weight of a bowling ball is

all important and a simple guide

is to use as heavy as a ball as you

    can without sacrificing balance.

Don't let the ball throw you off

in the slightest. A long list of

    greats have used lighter balls.

    Hall of Fame teacher Bill

    Bunetta advises that a lighter

ball might call for a more solid

pocket hit but adds that a lighter

ball still will carry well. A big

advantage of the lesser weight is

that arm swing comes easier and

the ability to speed the ball is

    enhanced.

    Legend Buzz Fazio used to

    suggest that when you think

    you're reaching the rocking

chair stage, don't rock away too

soon. Just go to a lighter ball

and still enjoy many years of

fine bowling. There was a time when you

had a big choice of color in

    bowling balls----black or shades

of black. Now, there are as many

colors for bowling balls as there

are for Christmas tree balls or

Easter eggs so let your bowling

    ball's color reflect whatever you

    wish.

    And Teata Semiz made no

excuses for his feeling for new

    bowling balls.

    "Many times I didn't change

much at all, but a new ball gives

you a new outlook and a new

    mental lift that can't be

matched." said Semiz. So for all those bowlers on

your gift shopping list, for any

occasion, a bowling ball is the

    all-time winner.

    J o a n T a y l o r s Te n P i n R a p . . . .Someone got an early Christmas present! Victoria Goncalves, 26, saw her

first 300 game while rolling in the Hits and Misses League at Sparta Lanes.

The 22-year veteran of the game was averaging 193, so in addition to recog-

nition for a perfect game, she shot 107 pins over average. Its taken me two

days to realize I did it, she said.

Goncalves bowled for years with her family, parents, aunts, uncles, then

cousins, and joined junior leagues. She credits her junior leagues and high

school coach Naz Larsen who worked with her at Curtis High School.

Larsen manages Rabs Country Lanes on Staten Island.

Her games were 300-235-195 for a 730. She bested her previous high

game of 288, rolled last year.

Was she nervous? I thought my whole body was shaking, but I know that

my knees definitely were. Jim Winterfeld, a county director who was

bowling that night told her to take a breath, not to worry, and that she would

be fine. And she was. She is going to receive a USBC ring for her achieve-

ment. She is no stranger to greatness, as she and JR Mabee won the county

    doubles last year, scratch division.

I think that Annette (Oswald, bowling in that league) was more excited

than I was. She said I was the first female ever to roll a perfect game in that

league. Victoria dedicated her score to my parents, Dara and John, for

helping me through all the years, putting up with tournaments and all the

    new equipment.

ARLINGTON, Texas Although there are more

now has been extended until Jan. 15, 2010.

The 136-day event begins Feb. 20 at the National

Bowling Stadium and is scheduled to conclude on

July 5. This will mark the first of two consecutive

years the tournament will be held at the NBS. It will

be the events record ninth visit to Reno and the

sixth time it will be held at the one-of-a-kind, 78-

    lane Stadium.

More than 65,000 competitors will make theirway to The Biggest Little City in the World to

compete for more than $6 million in prize money.

While we reached our original entry deadline

and enjoy what Reno and the Open Championships

have to offer, said Brian Lewis, USBC

Championships Director. Entries have been com-

ing in at a steady pace, which proves the interest is

back years is unprecedented, USBC is challenging

bowlers to help break the participation record. To

entice them, the Reno-Sparks Convention and

Visitors Authority has teamed with USBC to form

the USBC Eagle's Nest, a special club for team cap-

tains who field teams in both 2010 and 2011.

Upon reserving spots for both years, captains will

receive a monthly e-mail newsletter featuring tour-

nament tips, the latest bowling trends and special

offers. Eagles Nest members also will be eligible

for special giveaways, including a brand new car or

truck, round-trip airfare compliments of USBC

Tim Scott Tops Youth at HolidayBy Vince Albrecht

Oakland, NJ Sixteen-year-old Tim Scott, who at last years Passaic

County Tournament exploded with 290-767 for his West Milford quin-

tet, showed more of that incredible talent again at Holiday Bowl in the

Stan Niemiec Youth Travelers competition. After opening with 236,

227, Tim caught everyones attention by stringing the first nine in his

third game, but a stubborn 10-pin on his tenth delivery denied him a

shot at perfection this day. He calmly converted the spare and finished

with 278-741, the seasons best individual effort to date. His Holiday

Bowl II teammates Rich Gutches 226-657 and Colette Malyack 241-

618 contributed big time to the sweeping victory, garnering league

highs of 1042-3057 in stunning Holiday I, which had a great outing

    from young Brian Rizzi 245-592.

Fair Lawn I took three games from Montvale II thanks largely to

Marla Auslander, whose 198-507 was an astounding 162 pins over

average while twelve-year-old Isiah Tolbert added 199 and 205.

Montvale IIs pin-bashing duo Bryan Kist 236-661 and BrianOFlaherty 245-617 along with Matt Hausers 202 wasnt enough to

stay with the victors who took over first place.

Thirteen bowlers combined to roll twenty-seven deuces in addition

to the seven series of 600 or better, to the delight of family, friends

and others who appreciate the skills these young keglers possess.

Will Blanco Leads at No. ArlingtonBy Vince Albrecht

North Arlington, NJ There were no Friday the 13th jitters for four-

teen-year-old Will Blanco who carved out a nifty 619 threesome in

Adult-Junior doubles play. Will found the range after a 179 start and

closed with 227 and 213, lif ting his league-high average above 196 in

catapulting the Redbirds into third place.

The A Team took advantage of position week to knock S.A.S. from

the top, 5-2 as Nikki Arrigo stayed sharp with 189-494. Nick Gavronfinished strong with 204, helping to salvage the finale for S.A.S. which

had held first place since opening week. Team Awesome jumped to

fourth place, turning back the pesky Chipmunks, 5-2; Margaret Ziobro

had two above average games for the winners as did Sam Passaro for

the Mighty Chipmunks [youve got to love that team name]. Eleven-

year-old Chris McBride rolled 180, his best this season in helping

    ARLINGTON, Texas Former

    Professional Bowlers Association

    Senior Tour star John Handegard

    and longtime Womens

    International Bowling Congress

    Sergeant-at-Arms Betty Barnes

have been elected to the United

    States Bowling Congress Hall of

Fame by the USBC Hall of Fame

    Committee.

They will be inducted at a spe-

cial outdoor ceremony May 12 at

    the International Bowling

    Campus. The induction ceremony

    also will include those elected

    from the national superior per-

    formance ballots. On the mens

ballot are Del Ballard Jr., Keller,

    Texas; Marshall Holman,

    Medford, Ore.; David Husted,

    Milwaukie, Ore.; Amleto

    Monacelli, Barquisimeto,

    Venezuela; David Ozio,

    Beaumont, Texas; and Wayne

    Webb, Sacramento, Calif. The

    womens ballot has Dede

    Davidson, Buellton, Calif.; Carol

    Gianotti, Perth, Australia; and

    Kim Terrell-Kearney, Grand

    Prairie, Texas.

    Handegard, 71, a right-hander

from Spring, Texas, was chosen inthe Veterans category. The 76-

    year-old Barnes, from Reno, Nev.,

    was elected in the Meritorious

    Service division.

    It was overwhelming,

    Handegard said, recalling his

    emotion upon being informed of

the honor. I had goose bumps. Its

    something I never thought could

ever happen. I had been on the bal-

lot before and didnt make it and

thought maybe they forgot me. I

    guess they didnt.

Handegard was a late bloomer in

the sport as he won his first PBA

title of any kind on the Senior Tour

in 1990. Five years later, he became the oldest player to cap-

ture a PBA national title, winning

in Kennewick, Wash., at age 57.

He went on to win 14 PBA Senior

titles, three PBA Senior Player of

the Year honors and three selec-

    tions to Bowling Magazines

    Senior All-America team.

It took me a long time to find

    my game, said Handegard, who

    has virtually retired from bowl-

ing and spends his time working

part-time at golf courses and a

golf store. The power of posi-

tive thinking finally helped me. I

used to beat myself up for not

being perfect. The big thing I

had to realize was I wasnt per-

    fect. Having the right mental

    game and proper nutrition were

    what helped me finally succeed.

    Barnes served as WIBC

    Sergeant-at-Arms from 1994-

2005 after first joining the WIBC

Board of Directors in 1989. As

    Reno/Sparks Womens Bowling

    Association president, she was

    instrumental in helping the Reno

    community build the National

    Bowling Stadium and bring the

    WIBC Championships

    Tournament to her hometown.

    She helped coordinate the suc-

    cessful hosting of the WIBC

    Championship Tournaments in

    1988, 1997, 2000 and 2003. She

also helped with the 2006 and

    2009 USBC Womens

    Championships.

She actively participated oncommittees for the 13th

    Federation International des

    Quilleurs World Championships

in Reno in 1995 and assisted in

the 2001 and 2002 FIQ Senior

    Opens in her hometown.

I cried and laughed at the

    same time, said Barnes,

    describing her reaction when she

    was given the news. There

    couldnt be anything greater in

    serving bowling. Its the height

    of my bowling life.

    There have been so many

times when I marched either new

or past Hall of Famers up the

aisle at the WIBC AnnualMeeting. I never dreamed that

    would happen to me.

    Barnes previously was elected

    into the Nevada and Greater

Reno WBA Halls of Fame for both

    meritorious service and superior

    performance.
