As we prepare for some bigger labs and projects the following items would be greatly appreciated.

What we are learning and big assignments:

6th Grade: This week we will be continuing wrapping up the different interactions of organisms in the ecosystem. Notes should be reviewed every night for 10 minutes. The date of the upcoming test is this Friday, January 29th.

7th Grade: This week, we are studying more on body systems. Notes should be reviewed every night for 10 minutes. The date of the upcoming test is February 2nd.

8th Grade: This week, we are studying more on the periodic table and beginning chemical reac-tions. Notes should be reviewed every night for 10 minutes. The date of the upcoming test is this Wednesday, January 27th.

Upcoming events and deadlines:

6th Grade: Ecosystems Part 1 due Friday, February 5th.

Essential Questions: How do you measure success?

There was a quiz today on section 2. This week we will be studying the modern United States. This will include the economy, culture, and politics.

Grade Social Studies

Ancient Southwest Asia and Africa

Essential Question: How much does geography affect people’s lives?

The test over the Fertile Crescent chapter was today. This week we will be looking at Ancient Egypt and Nubia.

8th

Grade Social Studies

The Revolution

Essential Question: When is war justified?

We will continue looking at the beginning of the war and the Declaration of Independence. We will be changing up how we are covering the content to give some differentiation to the class. There won’t be as much computer work during this lesson.

Weighted Grades

I do weight my grades for academic classes as follows:

Tests/Projects = 40%

Quizzes/Homework/Classwork = 35%

Notes/Participation/ = 25%

This does make it so that you can’t add up their total number of points and divide it by the total points possible and calculate a correct grade.

This week we will continue our unit on the novel Iqbal. We will also practice analyzing

poetry. In addition, students will spend time learning new vocabulary words in their Rev It Up

7th Grade

This week we will continue our unit on the novel Enrique’s Journey. We will also prac-

tice analyzing poetry. In addition, students will complete assignments in their Word Wisdom

8th Grade

This week we will continue our unit on the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. We will

also practice analyzing poetry. In addition, students will complete assignments in their Word

Wisdom workbooks. 1/25/16: Spelling Test #14, 1/28/16: Word Wisdom Unit 4 Part 4 Due,

1/29/16: Vocabulary Test #4

7th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, and Geometry with

In 7th Grade Math we will be solving problems with Surface Area and Volume. We will then

review Module 9 and take our Module 9 Quiz on Friday, January 29th.

In 8th Grade Math we will solve systems by elimination using multiplication and review spe-

cial systems. We will then spend two days reviewing Unit 3 (Modules 7 & 8). We will take

our Unit 3 Test on Friday, January 29th.

In Geometry we will work on finding angle measures in polygons, using properties of paral-

lelograms, and working with rhombues, rectangles, and squares. We will take our 8.1-8.4

quiz on Friday, January 29th.

6th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra with

7th Grade Writing-This week students will continue reading and analyzing The Diary of Anne Frank and

her biography. Students will complete the summary and discussion log for each set of entries read,

specified in their packet. This week students will learn the rules for subject verb agreement and prac-

tice. Homework for the week will include finishing summaries not completed in class and a grammar

worksheet.

6th Grade Writing-This week students will read chapter's 24-33 in I am Malala. Students will complete

the summary and discussion log for each set of chapters read, specified in their packet. This week stu-

dents will continue learning about pronouns and antecedents. Homework for the week will include fin-

ishing summaries not completed in class and a grammar worksheet in their skill book.

8th Writing: We will continue our comma study this week, focusing on using them between adjectives

and after introductory elements. Students will have a quiz sometime next week as we move forward.

Additionally, we will continue learning about how to avoid plagiarism by learning how to cite sources in-

text. This means students will also practice how to use sources in-text through direct quotes and para-

phrases. Lots of practice will culminate with a mini paragraph at the end of the week that uses both

types of in-text citation as well as a works cited page. This will tentatively be due Friday in class, but

watch Google Classroom for updates.

6th Grade Math- We start Module 9 this week. We will be looking at Exponents and

how they work, and prime factorization.

8th Grade Math- We will finish our unit on systems of linear equations this week. We

will learn how to solve a system by elimination when things don’t add up so easy. We

will use multiplication to help us eliminate one variable. We have a UNIT 3 TEST on

Friday. Please start studying for the test by reviewing Unit 3 every night this week.

Algebra- We will finish Chapter 7 this week. Our Chapter 7 test will be on Wednesday,

and then we will move into factoring.

Community Service Grading

2.5 new hours each quarter in addition to the hours required the quarter before

To receive a 100%, students should have a total of 2.5 hours at the end of 1st quarter, 5 hours at

the end of 2nd

quarter, 7.5 hours at the end of 3rd

quarter, and 10 hours at the May 11th cutoff date

for 4th quarter.

Until the previous quarter’s requirements are met no new credit will be given.

Students will receive 20 points for each completed half hour of service in the quarterly require-

ment. Additional half hours are credited to the following quarter up to the 10 hour requirement. Once the 10 hour requirement is met the student will receive a 100% for that quarter and all follow-ing quarters.

A log (available in Mrs. Hughes’ room) must be completed for each month’s service and turned in

to Mrs. Hughes’ room.

Partial half hours will receive no credit. Hours turned in after the quarterly deadline will be counted

toward the total in the next quarter.

Community Service

Students can turn their hours in to the bin marked “Return Completed Forms Here” on the black tower in my room. 3

rd quarter hours are due March 4

th.
