In honor of American Heart Month in Febru-ary, OMC is offering several free educational events and heart health screenings. West Plains Mayor Jack Pahlmann signed a proclamation declaring February as Heart Month.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Protection, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. One in every four deaths in the United States is the result of heart disease.

Symptoms include chest discomfort, discom-fort in other areas of the upper body including one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stom-ach, and shortness of breath. Other signs may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

“Listen to your heart. It may be trying to tell you something. Receiving prompt medical

attention is crucial if you are suffering from a heart attack. If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, dial 911. The longer you wait, the greater your chances are of having irreversible heart damage or poten-tially not surviving your heart attack. When you use 911, you receive quick assessment and care as soon as emergency medical responders arrive. OMC is alerted so our specialized cardiac team is ready to continue your care as soon as you come through our doors,” according to Tim Kimball, Director of Surgical, Heart, and Lung Care Services. “At OMC, we are proud to offer a full line of cardiology care including round-the-clock interventional cardiology for patients suffer-ing from a heart attack.”

Speake and Dunbar receive Oncology Rehabilitation CertificationThere are currently 12 million cancer survivors in the United States, and in West Plains, over 400 new patients began treatment at Ozarks Medical Center (OMC) Cancer Treatment Center in 2015. The need for comprehensive care for patients with cancer has become profoundly important. OMC has responded to this need by offering a comprehensive Oncology Rehabilitation Program.

The OMC Oncology Rehabilitation Program is focused on providing rehabilita-tive programs for patients with all types of cancer diagnoses and in all phases of treatment. The goal of the program is to help the cancer patient obtain maximal physical, social, psychological, and vocational functioning. The program involves restoring health and wellness to patients living through cancer, and living after cancer. The program focuses on decreasing side effects of chemotherapy and radiation and maximizing patients’ level of function as they progress through and recover from treatment.

An Oncology exercise pro-gram is available to help the patient work on core issues of decreased aerobic activity, decreased muscle strength, fatigue, and impaired physical functioning. Even for patients being treated on a palliative basis, oncology rehab programs nation-wide have improved Quality of Life survey scores by as much as 64%.

Two physical therapists from OMC Rehabilitation Services have recently been certified in Oncology Rehabilitation. Theresa Speake PT,CLT has been a therapist at OMC for 25 years. She received her BS in Biology at Truman State in 1988, and her Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1990 at the University of Missouri. She has been a certified Lymphedema Therapist since 2000, and received her Oncolo-gy Rehabilitation Certification in February 2015.

Julie Dunbar MSPT,CLT has been at OMC for 13 years. A graduate from the University of Central Arkansas in 1995, she received her lymphedema certification in 2006, and Oncology Rehabilitation Spe-cialty in May of 2015.

OMC Rehabilitation Services employs four therapists who are certi-fied in the management of lymphedema, however the goal is to pre-vent lymphedema from occurring. Seeing a patient prior to a cancer surgery allows the patient to be educated about the early warning signs of lymphedema. Also, post-surgery appointments educate the patient in self-management techniques to remove excess fluid from the area to prevent lymphedema, and appropriate exercises to regain range of motion.

In addition, OMC Rehabilitation Services has Speech Language Pa-thologists trained in Myofascial Release, specifically for the patients with cancers of the head and neck, to assist in improving their ability to swallow or changes in voice quality due to surgery and/or radiation.

For more information or to schedule an appointment, contact OMC Rehabilitation Services at 417-257-5959.

Insurance Billing Address ChangeEffective 01/01/2016 BMI has changed where insur-ance claims are being sent. BMI is sending out new insurance cards to everyone on the insurance plan however, until these are received please print off the attached card and provide this when seeing any provider. Your member ID and Group number will remain the same. Please note that because the cards were not received by members before 01/01 there may be errors in your billing. The providers and pa-tient accounts are working steadily to try and correct these errors for you as quickly as possible. I know this has caused an inconvenience for you as well as the providers but I ask that you have patients while we try to work together and get this corrected.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Hospital PoliciesPlease make sure everyone is reviewing the Infant Ab-duction Policy on the portal and your departmental policy if you have one.

Also, there are staff having problems locating the lock-down policy. Please note the policy is located in “EOP”, and begins on page 98, and includes the listing of de-partments that are required to secure exits on the main OMC campus. This is a reminder for staff to review your departmental and hospital wide policies including the lockdown policy. Remember drills are to provide us with knowledge, and to understand how to respond should an incident occur. Thank you,

Dependents Insurance AuditSeveral coworkers have asked about this audit. If you do not have dependents that you have enrolled in the OMC health-care or dental benefits, you do not have to do anything for this audit!

For those coworkers who do provide healthcare or dental coverage to dependents, you should have received a letter from Sharp asking you to provide documentation. Please remember to send copies of the requested documentation to Sharp.

Volunteers NeededThis year’s Heart Health Screening will be on Friday, February 12th from 6:30-10:00 a.m. in Heart Care Services. We are in need of both clinical and non-clinical volunteers!!! This is a wonderful event that our community enjoys and greatly appreciates! If you are able to help and/or have any questions about volunteer-ing, please feel free to call or email me.

Erin Roberts,BSEd., Education [email protected]

• Thank you also for supplying feedback on where we can improve our ser-vice to both patients and their families.

• Our free guest Wifi service has been provided for a number of years and has been made available within the hospital campus and at a number of our clinics and facilities in West Plains.

• On any given day, we have an average of three hundred devices connected to our wireless network and all sharing a dedicated Internet connection. An individual’s experience may vary depending on when they are access-ing the Wifi network and the number of other users concurrently connect-ed. Usage is not controlled or limited in any way. Some times are busier than others, and it can be unpredictable.

• One of the challenges we face living and working in a rural community is the availability of affordable high-speed Internet access. It is an import-ant matter to the City of West Plains and to the Ozarks Medical Center. Our Chief Information Officer, John Wilcox, is currently a member of the Broadband Study Group commissioned by the city and they are looking into how to best improve Internet speeds and service for the businesses and residents of West Plains.

• We endeavor to provide the best service at a reasonable cost to the hospi-tal. And, we are continually looking at ways we can improve. Thank you for expressing the importance of this service to you and your family.

What do you say when a patient or family member complains to you about our free guest wifi on the main campus or Parkway (if they cannot get on, if they lose connection, etc)?

CDC Issues Zika Travel AlertJanuary 15, 2016

Pregnant women in any trimester should consider postponing travel to 14 countries and territories in South and Central Amer-ica and the Caribbean where mosquitos are spreading the Zika virus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced tonight. Viral infection in pregnant women has been associated with microcephaly in infants.

In what it calls a level 2 travel alert, the CDC also advises women who are thinking about becoming pregnant to consult with their physician before traveling to these areas, and if they do, follow strict precautions to avoid mosquito bites. Safeguards in-clude wearing long-sleeve shirts and long pants and using insect repellent.

The 14 countries and territories covered by the travel alert are Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, Venezuela, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.Lyle Petersen, MD, director of the CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases, told reporters at a 7 PM ET briefing that the travel alert couldn’t wait until Monday.

“We believe this is a fairly serious problem,” said Dr Petersen. “Because there’s growing evidence of a link between Zika and mi-crocephaly, we thought it was important to warn people as soon as possible.”

Babies with microcephaly have a smaller-than-expected head. They often have smaller brains as well that may not have devel-oped properly. Problems associated with microcephaly, which include seizures, developmental delays, intellectual and motor disabilities, and hearing loss can range from mild to life-threatening.

Microcephaly aside, the Zika virus normally does not cause illness that requires hospitalization or leads to fatalities. Roughly one in five people infected with the virus will develop symptoms such as fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. The symptoms usually are mild and last a few days to a week. There is no vaccine to prevent Zika, or medicine to treat it.

Microcephaly Uncommon Here Of the 14 countries and territories cited in the travel alert, Brazil troubles the CDC the most. The agency said Brazilian public health authorities have identified 3500 cases of microcephaly, some severe and fatal, between October 2015 and January 2016.

Cynthia Moore, MD, PhD, director of the agency’s Division of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, told reporters to-night that this number represented a definite but unquantified increase over the normal incidence of microcephaly in Brazil. The baseline for the condition there, Dr Moore said, is hard to determine. However, even half of the reported cases “would be quite a large increase.”

Brazilian health authorities provided the CDC with samples from two pregnancies that ended in miscarriages, and from two infants with microcephaly who died soon after birth. All four mothers said they had experienced Zika symptoms. CDC tests showed that the Zika virus was in the brain of the two full-term infants, and a genetic sequence analysis showed that the virus in all four cases matched that of the Zika virus circulating in Brazil.

Dr Petersen said his agency is working with Brazilian health authorities and other groups to better understand the link between the Zika virus and microcephaly.

Microcephaly is uncommon in the United States, affecting an estimated two to 12 babies per 10,000 live births, according to the CDC.

More information about the CDC travel alert is on the agency’s website.
