Dear FOUMC family,

Greetings in the name and hope of Jesus Christ!

Happy New Year! The old year has gone and the New Year has just begun. The month of January is a great time for us to reflect on the year that has ended and to make New Year’s Resolutions. According to the Roman myth, the name of January is derived from Janus, the Roman god of beginning and transitions. This god is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past presiding over the beginning and endings of conflict. As we stand in January and enter into 2015, I hope that you all can make a fresh start with great resolution!

Speaking of resolutions, I think of a word that describes my hope and prayerful wish for our church: that is “Rising.” As the sun rises in 2015, I pray that you will experience a “rising” in your own life. I also pray that our church will experience “rising” with great hearts and passion for Jesus Christ in our church ministries!

Let Us Rise Up!

In Christ’s Love,

Let Us Rise Up!

Prayer Requests Geri Ann Alviso's recent bunion surgery went well and she thanks everyone for their prayers for healing and comfort.

Geri Ann Alviso asks prayers for her 16-year-old neighbor and flower assistant. Please pray that she'll open her heart to God and listen so she can make good decisions.

Joanne Cossairt asked for prayers for her son-in-law who had shoulder surgery last month in San Francisco. Please pray for healing and comfort.

Cynthia Wold asks prayers for her friend, Jane and her family. Jane had a major stroke last

month. Please pray for the best possible outcome for her and strength for her family.

Lyn Gras asks prayers for her very close friend Liz Breck. She has Pulmonary Fibrosis and underwent a lung transplant at UCSF in December. She still has many health hurdles ahead and Lyn asks that we pray for her continued recovery.

Katy Houghton, a former member of our church now lives in Maryland. Katy spent part of December in the hospital with the flu and a bladder infection. She is home now. Please pray for

continued good health and comfort.

Ongoing Prayer Concerns Please keep Sue McGee, Stan and Alma Andrus, Lola Morphis, Roger and Norma Bennett, Margy Lauritzen, and all of our church members and friends who may not make it to church regularly in your prayers.

Do you have prayer requests? Contact Nancy Klanjac

([email protected]; 967-5427), so the members of our prayer chain can pray for

you, or contact the Church Office ([email protected]; 961-6631) to

have your requests printed in the Acorn.

Because we are now offering verbal prayers during the service, our Caring Ministry team may not hear them all. If your prayers need to be added to the Prayer Chain or you would like some assistance/help from the Caring Ministers, please call or e-mail Betty Phillips. (482-3514; [email protected])

Thank you to the anonymous donor for repairing Pastor Jeong’s headset microphone.

Many thanks to Gay and Roy Anderson for the loan of their Nativity figures for use on our altar during Advent. This focal point has added a dimension to the preaching topics. They are lovely figures.

Words of gratitude to all who created lovely personal items to offer at the Bethlehem Bazaar. During this busy season your extra efforts in supporting this event is gratefully acknowledged. It did bring in a tidy sum to the church treasury. Thank you again.

To the choir and Samantha for the lovely Christmas musical treat. The two instrumentalists were a delight as well. Well done.

To the Pinochle Club, Joanne Cossairt, and Karlene Brown for purchasing and arranging for a new freezer in the kitchen hallway.

Thank you to the Worship Ministry and all who helped prepare our Sanctuary for Advent — from hanging the greens to donating Chrismon trees to ordering poinsettias, and all the other little details that make Advent special.

Thank You Notes:

From Family Promise upon receiving the proceeds from November’s Sister Swing concert:

“Thank you for your donation to Family Promise of Sacramento. The families here at Family Promise are forever in your gratitude and thank you beyond measure. Please know that your

donation is helping families without homes begin again and find a home. May god bless you and yours. Sincerely, Marsha Spell, Executive Director”

Finance Ministry by Ellen Frosch Happy New Year to everyone! Your Finance Ministry Team is busy wrapping up all the documentation and reporting for 2014. Information below is current through November 30, 2014.

Here is a summary of our income and expenses:

To anyone who uses the piano in the sanctuary:

I have been finding the piano left open, uncovered, and unplugged. This is unacceptable! The piano is extremely valuable and needs to be taken care of. The damp chaser cord was fixed and a cover was purchased, but these do no good if they are not used.

When leaving the building, the lid of the piano must be closed and the cover put on. Under no circumstances should the damp chaser be unplugged. If you are moving the piano, be careful that the casters do not roll over the cord - this is why it had to be replaced.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Thank you, Samantha Arrasmith, FOUMC Music Director; 916-670-2650; [email protected]

Please take care of our Sanctuary piano!

In January we are reading what the scriptures say about prayer. A class member suggested that reading scripture is a form

of prayer. Do you have a thought to share on that? It is the sort of thing we do in class. We read and discuss scripture. Would it not be a worthy goal to live life in an attitude of prayer? You can read what we are reading. January 11 we will read John 17:6-21; January 18 we will consider Hebrews 4:14 to 5:10; January 25 it will be James 5:13-18. Better yet, come and join us Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the library.

GOOD NEWS: Since 1978 FOUMC has filled 4 arks for Heifer International, including the one finished in December 2013. Our Heifer International ministry team was so elated that we set a goal of $5,000 in donations to fill another ark in 2014. (Yes, I know, we were optimistic but unrealistic.)

BAD NEWS: We did not raise enough to fill an ark full; but we made over $1,000 during the year.

GOOD NEWS: The Children’s Sunday School took on a project of raising money for beehives for Heifer International. Thank you, children and teachers! Check back in February for the final numbers.

GOOD NEWS: The “new books” on the pew by the Heifer/Sharing Table have been a success. Several have been taken, some have been returned for others to read.

NEW NEWS: During 2014, we emphasized something special every month to keep you aware of giving gifts or memorials by using “In Honor” and “In Memory” cards. Keep these in mind for 2015, also—the cards are free.

CORRECTION NEWS: Thanks to Lora and Jim Allen, we enjoyed displaying their large, wooden, handcrafted ark during the December Advent events. In the December Acorn, I assumed Jim had made it and wrote that. (He does have crafting/fixer-skills, after all!)

When it was displayed the first time at the Bethlehem Bazaar, Lora and Jim told me I was wrong (imagine that!). Actually, they just told me “the rest of the story.” They belong to a craft guild, whose members did all the carving and painting. The guild then had a raffle, and Lora had the winning ticket. But I think Jim bought the tickets for both of them! The detail, especially on each set of animals was incredible. Each person did a set of animals. (My favorites were the two giraffes.) The children loved the ark also. They would flock around waiting for us to get the table set up and the ark positioned. They would then put each pair of animals where they thought the pair should be. (I had not expected the children to be involved but it was a delight to watch them!)

Have you ever opened the Sunday bulletin and had a cascade of paper fall out? Do you find the inserts helpful or a nuisance (or a helpful nuisance)?

I try to keep the number of bulletin inserts to 3 or fewer each week. The blue insert highlights upcoming events, current announcements, and the calendar for the week. This insert is included every Sunday and is meant for you to take home and put on your refrigerator, stick in your datebook, or pin to your bulletin board as a reminder of things to come.

Other inserts that are left behind on Sunday mornings are often used for several weeks to save on printing and paper costs.

Questions or concerns about bulletin inserts? You can contact me during church office hours: Monday—Friday, 8:30 am—12:30 pm; 916-961-6631 or [email protected].

On the 3rd Saturday of each month, Ruby and Wayde Wicker reach out to the homeless community in Fair Oaks, Carmichael, and downtown Sacramento by providing tarps for shelter in the winter and shade in the summer. They have become known for their ministry and are recognized by people in need. However, Ruby and Wayde need our help to continue helping others. Tarps may be dropped off in the collection bin in the Narthex. Monetary donations may be placed in the offering plate. (Please write “Tarps” in the memo line of a check or on the outside of an envelope for a cash donation.)

Ruby and Wayde also take clothing to the homeless community. Wintertime sees an increase in the need for gloves and hats. Clothing items may also be left in the “Tarp” collection bins in the Narthex.

For more information about this outreach ministry or how you can help, please see Ruby or Wayde. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

What is Scrip?

It’s fundraising while you shop! Scrip fundraising gift cards are the same gift cards you would normally purchase from a retailer in your local retail stores, and they work the same way. You’ll find cards you can use at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, movie theaters, home improvement stores, and more. You are paying full face value for a gift card that can be used in place of cash, checks, or credit cards for everyday shopping. The Church Office will place a group order on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. We pay a reduced cost for the gift card and immediately “earn” the difference.

How Do I Place an Order?

Orders may be

1. handed to Kathy Glass or Geri Ann Alviso on a Sunday

2. placed in the blue pouch on the Narthex Bulletin Board (lower right corner)

3. placed in the Admin Asst Spencer mailbox (lower right corner)

4. mailed to the Church Office

5. turned in at the Church Office during office hours

Order Schedule for January 2015

1/20 (Tues) place scrip order (ordering on Tuesday due to MLK Day)

1/22 (Thurs) scrip order arrives & can be picked up during office hours

1/25 (Sun) scrip orders passed out after worship by Geri Ann or Kathy

Questions?

Do you still have questions about the program? Are you unsure whether you would like to participate? Please contact me during office hours (Monday—Friday, 8:30 am—12:30 pm) and I will be happy to talk to you!

Fundraising with Scrip

By Dedra Beauchamp, Church Secretary Our first scrip order was placed on June 16 and over the following 26 weeks we ordered $20,628 in gift cards and earned $817.29 in rebates. That averages to $125.72 per month of ‘free’ money! In 2015 we will place scrip orders once per month on the 3rd Monday of the month. Order forms are on the Narthex Bulletin Board. See the next page for our most popular and frequently ordered scrip cards. Choose from one of these or download the full order form on our website (http://fairoaksumc.org/#/upcoming-events/downloads-slidesinserts). Thank you all for participating and making this a successful program!

The Resurrection Conversation Continues!!!

Dear Sacramento UM Community and Colleagues,

We are continuing our process of learning how to speak a new language in the Resurrection Conversation.

On January 17th, from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm at Rancho Cordova UMC we will gather again to continue our work in learning how to turn from our assumptions about a dying church and to live into the Resurrection! We are Easter People, after all and know death and dying are just the beginning of something life-giving.

Our agenda is to empower ourselves and our people to move from death to life, from cynicism to hope; to challenge and invite you to participate, not in collective weariness or resignation, but in claiming a new sense of power and enthusiasm for what God is doing.

In Oakland we committed “a random act of resurrection” as nearly 70 people showed up at Elmhurst United Methodist Church to construct raised beds for a Community Garden the Church is sponsoring. That one day changed hearts and lives. That one day built relationships and moved us a step closer to living into the victory that God has won for us already. At the end of our day together we will emerge with at least one “act of resurrection” that we will undertake as a Wesleyan community.

I look forward to seeing you all there and to sharing with you in this unpredictable and wonderful journey into the Risen Life.

Thanks so much for all you do! I am in awe of your work and your faith.

Business Directory

Q: Why do we have a business directory in a church newsletter?

A: The donations provided by the above businesses help offset the cost of publishing a monthly newsletter.

Q: Who are the people behind these businesses?

A: They are members or regular attendees who consider FOUMC their church home and wish to share their business talents with their church family.

Q: Can I be listed in the business directory each month?

A: Yes! Contact the church office at 961-6631 or [email protected] to learn more.

After an unintentional year-long hiatus, we are re-instating the Business Directory in the monthly Acorn newsletter! Your participation includes a business-card-size ad on the Business Directory page located towards the back of the newsletter every month with one business each month spotlighted on the front page of the newsletter. Featured businesses on the front page will rotate monthly. We are asking for a $20 donation to be included for the whole year. However, donations, ad size, and frequency are up to your discretion. Contact the Church Office if you are interested: 961-6631 or [email protected].
