The Newsletter of Jonesborough Presbyterian Church January 2014 January 2014 Dear Friends, I remember, several years ago, looking at a montage of photographs created by my now-20-year-old niece Katherine. An outstanding swimmer, she had included primarily swim team memories, but a picture of a three- year-old Katherine at the top of the display caught my eye and my imagina- tion. In the photo she sits inside a large, red, plastic bucket. The bucket has a bright yellow handle. Katherines arms are tucked into the bucket with the rest of her. The straps of her dark blue swimsuit criss-cross on her back as she peers out across white sand to the Atlantic Ocean before her. The shadow of bucket and girl stretching back across the sand toward the camera like a sundial told me that it was morning sun bathing the beach and lifting a glittering, pale blue light from the sea. The longer I looked at the picture, the more it spoke to me, and the more it moved me to see myself inside it just like Katherine herself inside the bucket. Think about it. Sit yourself inside a bucket and cast your gaze across the miles upon miles of deep, rich, mysterious, often-dangerous ocean stretching out before you. It is a splendid metaphor for the human experience of God. We are made in Gods image, yes, but we are to God what a bucket is to the ocean. None of us can give full expression to God – especially not alone. Now, by no means am I suggesting that our individual lives do not matter, or that we cannot experience the grace and presence of God in solitude and private prayer. I am simply acknowledging that God creates us for community, and only in community – only in the presence of other buckets of all manner of sizes, shapes and colors – do we even begin to experience the inklings of awareness that the fullness of God exceeds not only our intellects, but our imaginations. As we stand at the threshold of a new year, I invite all of us to sit in a buckets moment, peering out over the new ocean of 2014 and feel in that moment the promise, the joy, the challenge, even the heartache that will be ours together. Lets acknowledge it and receive it. The next twelve months will not be perfect. We will have high and low tides just like we did in 2012, 2013 and in every other year we have lived. But 2014 is new. It is unexplored and unknown. It is fresh, and it holds a fullness we will not know until the waning moments of next December. What will we do with 2014? What will God ask of us in it? How will we make each moment count for the good of the next, and for the good of those with whom we live and work? Together, may we live in the Bucket—attentive to and grateful for one another. And together, may we live for the Ocean—attentive to and grateful for God. Peace, Allen

BEAR HUGS!! Happy New Year from Bear Anderson, our new Youth Director. Bear says that it has been “an exciting past few months since I have begun leading our youth. The Lord is truly amazing as we have already seen Him bless our friendships and fellowships with each other.” Bear is looking forward to getting to know the Lord deeper with all of us. Bear would like to thank the congregation for the support given to the adopted family for Christmas. He said it was “a huge blessing & very touching for myself, Heather, our youth, and of course, the family.” Bear also thanks Jim Cash, Larry Garst, Jacob Anderson & Allen Huff for the assistance with the float for the Jonesborough Christmas Parade. The church youth and Bear will leave for the Tennessee Christian Teen Conference (TCTC) in Gatlinburg the second weekend in January. Bear reports that other “upcoming events” will include the “Souperbowl” party on Feb 2nd, details of which will be announced as the date draws near. More events are planned for this coming spring and summer. “If you know of anyone between 7th-12th grade, invite them to come on out, “ Bear says. “I know that everyone can make an excuse why they cannot make it to youth group—BUT I am encouraging you to make it your priority to come to youth group. Looking back when I was young, I now know it was one of the most important activities I did. It can be life changing. I know is was for me. Thanks again for all your support. Many blessings!” Thanks, Bear! This should be an exciting youth year!

NO EXTENDED PARKING IN DRIVEWAY THE PROPERTY COMMITTEE requests that in order to keep the driveway on the office side of the church OPEN, VEHICLES NOT BE PARKED FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME IN THAT DRIVEWAY. When it is necessary to park a vehicle to load or unload items into or out of your vehicle, please move it to a space behind the church or in front of the church ASAP. It is EXTREMELY dangerous to back out onto Main Street traffic from this driveway. Driver’s visibility is very limited and that includes the drivers coming from the direction of Boone’s Creek or Fox Street towards the church.

Very Real Need for DEPENDABLE DRIVERS The Congregational Life and Membership Committee is seeking those people who can help some of our church members who are no longer have the option of driving themselves to doctor’s appoint-ments or possibly the quick trip to the grocery store, etc. If you can lend your time in this endeavor, it would be gratefully and graciously accepted by those who are in need of that extra special care. Please notify Kathy Scheu in the office if you can add your name to the Dependable Drivers List!
