P earland is no stranger to growth and expansion. As the second fastest growing city in the state and 15th in the nation, Pearland has transformed itself from a

small, quiet town to a sprawling city offering many opportuni-ties. As we develop into a more mature suburb, supporting the arts is a natural progression to becoming a more vibrant city. Cultural arts can influence and inspire generations and can transform and unite a community. The arts include ev-erything from theatre performances, musical entertainment, paintings, sculptures and also expressions of dance, photogra-phy and literature. Residents of our city need a place to show-case their talent. If no one can see or hear it, is it really art?

As a result of this need, The Pearland Arts League was founded nearly a de-cade ago. The League is a non-profit organi-zation that thrives on volunteerism. With a board of directors that helps steer the direction of the or-ganization to help Pearland realize its full potential as an exciting art commu-nity, the organiza-tion has come a long way in the past ten years.

The first event organized by The

Pearland Arts League was “Party on the Grand” in 2003. It was held on Grand Blvd. in the heart of the Old Townsite. As current president of The Pearland Arts League, Naomi Stevens remembers the event well. “It was an atmosphere of culture and appreciation for the arts,” said Stevens. “We filled the streets with everything from blues music to belly dancers on the two big stages to sculptures and funnel cakes.”

Two additional “Party on the Grand” events were held before Hurricane Ike hit the area in September 2008. The storm put the organization on hold for a least a full year as the city’s main building was damaged and out of commission. The Pearland Arts League members were scattered and did not meet again until its founder, Tom Reid, once again challenged many of the founding members to meet, and they named Naomi Stevens president. Ste-vens is a local artist who has served on Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars for 15 years and spent 18 years working in Japan and Rotary International to bring art to life.

“The resurgence of The Pearland Arts League and the recov-ering community businesses opened their lobbies and invited

local artists to display canvas art, pho-tography, sculpture, jewelry design and other monthly exhibits in 2010,” Stevens recalled. It was a time to celebrate as our city was once again back on its feet from the devastation from Ike. “There has never been a shortage of art and culture in Pearland; just no suitable or permanent venues to house such talent.”

According to Stevens, The Pearland Arts League continues to provide direc-tion, encourage artists, involve art organi-zations and businesses to focus and direct future growth. In November 2011, the League hosted its second annual “Best of Show” juried awards exhibition. Pearland Arts League Directors Margo Green and Michael Slattery served as curators and welcomed famous artists from Houston as judges. There were 30 art entries, and JNL Gallery owners Jo and Chuck Lar-gent presented the winners with frames. Music was played by pianist and Pearland High School student Taylor Lawrence and music instructor Cindy Mills.

“Art is my therapy,” said local artist Janiece Gautney and longtime resident. “By The Pearland Arts League having shows that feature local artists, it gives me a window to the world and access to people who want to buy my art,” she said. At a recent exhibit, Gautney sold three paint-ings. Local artists like Gautney need the League to help them showcase their work.

Pearland recently held a jazz festival where more than 20 world renowned mu-sical artists drew over 7,000 followers to Pearland Town Center. As a result, ho-tels filled up and restaurants had record waits all weekend. “At this event, you could watch an award winning artist at work with his pallet, paint and brush and view his collection,” Stevens said. Booths sold out, and the best news is that the jazz company plans to make the jazz festival an annual event.

Public art has started to appear around Pearland, just look in local lobbies. The Pearland Chamber of Commerce has hosted local art on the walls of its new

state-of-the-art building. Pearland School District’s theatres are playing to packed venues on a regular basis. There is a new, small theatre, Pearl Theatre, on the west side of town that is exciting live theatre goers. Of course, Kids’ Backporch Produc-tions is the only local children’s theatre group. It has grown over the years selling out shows, and currently, they are seeking a permanent home.

The Fourth Annual ART WALK is scheduled for March 2013. Local busi-nesses serve as galleries for PISD stu-dents’ art, and all students are encour-aged to get stamps from all of the places they visit. “We have movie producers, entertainers, music educators, dance instructors, drama teachers and the list goes on of those who make up the diverse and outstanding art family who reside in Pearland,” explained Stevens.

One of the latest arts exhibits is a partnership with the City of Pearl-and called “Corks and Canvas.” It was the brainchild of Stevens and Michelle Smith, Director of Pearland Parks and Recreation Department. “Corks and Can-vas” gives local artists a place to display and sell their work. Local bands provide entertainment, and it allows residents the opportunity to see the newest recre-ation facility, the Natatorium. The ex-hibit changes monthly and is a free event open to the public. The new 2013 “Corks and Canvas” schedule and can be found on The Pearland Arts League and the Parks and Recreation websites.

“Mayor Tom Reid has been the driving force behind the cultural arts movement in Pearland. We are fortunate to have him. He understands the connection be-tween the arts and the cultural develop-ment of a city,” Stevens said.

The Pearland Arts League is always looking for residents with spacious homes to host quarterly parties where evening entertainers are Pearlanders, and the treats are provided from local cafes. Visit www.PearlandArtsLeague.com for more information about upcoming events.

The Pearland Arts League logo was designed by a 1992 art student from Pearland High School. The design includes a “P” for Pearland. The outreached arms represent performing arts; the pen quill/paint brush embodies the organization’s commitment to writers, painters and more. This contemporary bright colored logo sits atop the statement “Bringing the Arts to Life.”

This is the power of art: the power to transcend our own self-interest,

our solipsistic zoom-lens on life, and relate to the world and each other

with more integrity, more curiosity, more wholeheartedness. – Maria Popova“ ”

Budgeting: Holiday Budgeting Center

I t’s the time of year for gift giving, entertaining, holiday parties, and for many, over-

spending and financial stress. This year, enjoy the season without let-ting holiday spending get the bet-ter of you; the tips and tools below will help. Setting a realistic holiday budget and making sure to stick to it is the first step to enjoying a more affordable and less stress-ful season. Here are a few ways to handle gift giving and celebrations without breaking the bank:

1. Set Your Budget. The best place to start making a holiday budget is to look at your spending during last year’s holiday season. In what areas did you spend more than planned? Next, make a list of the holiday purchases and events you plan to spend money on this year. Consider all of your major spending categories: gifts, enter-taining, meals, and travel – then estimate how much you can afford to spend in each category. Knowing your spending goals long before-hand will help you stay on track

Advertorial

financially as the season heats up. This easy-to-use Holiday Budget Calculator can help.

2. Get Creative. One great way to save money and wow friends and families is to get creative. Store-bought gifts are great, but home-made gifts are often more mean-ingful, and most recipients truly appreciate your time and effort. Ideas for creative gift projects are plentiful online.

If you like the idea of a personal touch and affordability but don’t have the time or skill to make gifts yourself, the ultimate online mar-ketplace for homemade gifts is Etsy.com, where you can find crafty items from over 200,000 sellers.

3. Join Together. Instead of excessively spending on each other this year, join together with family members to help those who may be less fortunate. Online opportunities are easy to find, and there are several in the article, Helping Others When Money Is Tight, at www.practicalmo-neyskills.com. Other opportunities for online giving can be found at

the websites for Oxfam Interna-tional and ACCION.

4. Travel Wisely. If you plan on traveling, take some time to de-termine how much it will cost you with our Holiday Travel Planner, and don’t forget these holiday trav-el planning tips.

5. Entertain for Less. Holidays are a wonderful time to entertain, but a little planning and budgeting can help you avoid financial head-aches. Let our Holiday Entertain-ment Planner help you ensure a fun event that won’t tax you finan-cially. Also, check out these holi-day entertainment tips to help you keep your holiday budget in shape.

For additional tips on helping your budget stay on track, visit our Holiday Spending Survival Guide.

L utheran South Academy (LSA) has been a fully accredited, premiere aca-demic institution serving the community since 1949. Rich in tradition and

focused on excellence, LSA has been committed to “Securing The Future” of its students for more than 60 years. A large part of this commitment involves employing only degreed and certified teachers at all levels, as well as offer-ing cutting edge technology and academic programs. Just recently, Lutheran South Academy was proud to be named an Exemplary School, one of only seven schools in the country to earn this distinction.

Our traditional classrooms are fully equipped with the latest modern technol-ogy and all students in grades 6th – 12th are equipped with their own personal MacBook to enhance the educational experience. A variety of student organi-zations are also available for interested students such as TAPPS Academics, Student Council, Houston Area Model United Nations, Newspaper, Yearbook, Drama, Choir, & Band. Athletic opportunities begin at the 5th grade level and include football, volleyball, cross country, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, golf, track, tennis and swimming.

At Lutheran South, your student isn’t merely a number; he or she is an inte-gral, contributing part of our campus. No one can deny that life is about build-ing lasting relationships and at LSA, your student has the opportunity to build these types of relationships with peers, coaches, faculty, and administrators. For more information, please check out our website at www.lutheransouth.org, or contact the admissions department at 281.464.8299.

Lutheran South Academy: An Exemplary School

More and more parents are rec-ognizing the importance of

enrolling their children in preschool to help them develop the right foun-dation for success in elementary school and beyond. The best pro-grams go beyond helping children master basic academic skills by supporting their development as happy, confident, well rounded in-dividuals.

Research shows that from birth to age 5, changes and growth in all areas of development are rapid. Children form strong neural connec-tions during this time as a result of experiences they have with every-one and everything they encoun-ter. The quality of those early in-teractions determines how children continue to learn and form relation-ships, which strongly influences their future success and happiness.

“Informed parents look for pre-school, pre-k, and kindergarten programs that take a balanced ap-proach to developing motor, social-emotional, creative and academic skills,” said Dr. Mary Zurn, vice president of education for Primrose Schools. “It takes quality instruc-tion, a well-rounded curriculum and a positive teacher relationship to prepare a child to succeed.”

Will your child be ready to enter el-ementary school? Selecting the right child care or preschool program is a critical step in helping your child suc-ceed. Plan to tour schools in advance so you have plenty of time to apply and enroll your child. F irst Christian Academy (FCA) established in 1989 offers an

accredited private school for Pre-K, 3 years through high school, includ-ing extended care. FCA is a private, independent school in the heart of Pearland on 518 just before the rail-road tracks. The academy recogniz-es and respects the uniqueness of each student, and the school’s mis-sion is to foster a love for education in all students. The core curriculum is Saxon Math and Reading, Core Knowledge and Ignitia. FCA class sizes are kept small, enabling teach-ers the opportunity to give one-on-one attention to each student.

Benefits to attending FCA in-clude:

• FCA teaches that the Bible is the guidebook for our lives and that a personal relationship with God is the way of escape from the difficult issues in life.

• FCA students receive a qual-ity education. Our academic phi-losophy concurs with the Bible by teaching precept upon precept in a small classroom setting for indi-vidual attention.

• The administration of FCA hand selects students and families that are like-minded with the philosophy of FCA. Our motto is, “A Christian School for the Christian Family.”

At FCA, we celebrate diversity and strive to instill integrity, com-passion and confidence, giving each student encouragement to become his or her unique self. First Christian Academy is proud to be an International School and is licensed with the Department of Immigration to issue I-20s for students all over the world.

MissionThe mission of St. Helen Catholic School is to educate the total child in

wisdom, age and grace.Philosophy

St. Helen Catholic School is a culturally diverse community composed of the clergy, parishioners, parents, students, school personnel and all persons who help to fulfill the school’s mission. St. Helen Catholic School promotes high academic standards within a Christ-centered, spiritual environment. Members of the St. Helen community seek to teach Catholic values, strengthen students in the catholic faith, focus on the education of the whole person and witness to the presence of Jesus Christ in the world.

HistorySt. Helen Catholic School was founded in 1996 through the vision and

generosity of the parishioners of St. Helen Catholic Church. In August 1997, we began classes on the church grounds with 50 students. In February 1998, the new school building was opened. The campus is well-equipped and features spacious classrooms, a library, and large science and computer labs.

St. Helen Catholic School is enrolling all year long and currently stands with a total of 260 students enrolled for the 2012-2013 school year. Please contact the school at 281-485-2845 if you have further questions or visit www.sthelenchurch.org to download the 2013-2014 registration packet. At St. Helen’s, we look forward to you and your child(ren) becoming active participants on our campus!

If your child’s day consists of TV, video games and surfing the Inter-

net, help is on its way!At Bushi Ban, children enjoy a fun

and energetic Martial Arts’ program that empowers them to become fit, strong and focused!

We begin by creating a fun, friendly and trusting environment where children can face their fears and overcome their challenges. Then we use an age appropriate curriculum that parallels our par-ents’ social, academic and environ-mental values.

As your child learns the art of self-defense, they also focus on sports-manship, healthy competition and leadership. As a result, your child develops: fitness, balance, coordi-nation, teamwork, focus, memory, respect, discipline and self-control.

We use a unique method called “Edu-Tainment” that when com-bined with Martial Arts, serves as the pathway to fitness, discipline, and excellence. And, we teach core “Bushi Ban values” to develop con-fidence, respect, and a winning per-sonal, social, and academic attitude.

Not only will your child gain the confidence that comes from know-ing how to defend themselves, but younger students participate in discussions on: “Stranger Danger,” “When to call 911,” “Fire Safety,” and “Street Safety.”

Children learn how to diffuse a situation using verbal defense, as well as using attitude and strong body language to prevent bullying. They are taught that fighting is the last resort.

The Bushi Ban child development system is based on achieving short and long term goals where recogni-tion, reward and ranking is an on-going method of award children. Stripes and belts are awarded on accomplishment and achievement.

Prepare your kids for the real world. Try Bushi Ban today. Call 281-997-9500 for information.

Boost Your Wellbeing with Chiropractic

It’s that time of year again! That time of year when we look in the

mirror and think: “I really have to do something! I have got to start exer-cising!!” We don’t always think that it is more than just how we look. It is also about how we feel physically, emotionally, mentally and most of all, our overall wellness.

A fabulous way to get a boost on our physical, emotional and mental wellbeing is trying chiropractic. It is the little things we do all day every day that we can use to change the way we feel on the inside and the outside. Do you sit all day at a com-puter and have stress in your shoul-ders that lead to an impending head-ache? Do you work on your feet all day and have pain in your feet or low back? Are you in a workout routine and can’t progress due to aches and pains? Have you thought about try-ing chiropractic for ways to help these issues? Chiropractic care can help with the physical stresses we put on our bodies daily in our jobs, at school and during recreation. Clear-ing up the physical stresses helps to ease the mental and emotional stresses that most of us deal with on a daily bases leading to an increase in wellbeing. Try chiropractic first, you will be amazed at the results!

Dr. Kirra Randolph, D.C. can be contacted at Embrace Wellness & Chiropractic, PLLC. Call 281-692-1700 or visit www.embracechiro.com.

body and consequently has a huge responsibil-ity to clean up the many chemicals that we eat, breath and touch every day. However, it is just as important to detoxify all other organs as well.

Now, how does this give us energy? Because all of those toxins and chemicals can slow us down and make us feel sluggish Think back to the car analogy: When it is time for an oil change, our cars just don’t run or perform optimally. So, we suggest that everyone cleanse their system at least once or twice a year. Cleanses also help to jump start your metabolism and is a great way to start your diet and the new year.

There are so many different choices and types of cleanses. At Natural Rewards, our edu-cated staff can help you make a personal and informative decision. We take pride in the fact that we study nutrition and herbs and have a passion for this industry. 1 You remember when Pearland had only one blinking traffic

2 You remember when Pear-land had a real ice house. That

is an ice house that was a real ice house such as Mrs. Cunningham ran on Main Street in a building which is one of very few old buildings still standing in old Pearland.

3 You remember when all of the kids in the Pearland School

games at what is now Zychlinski Park on Grand Blvd. when most of the town turned out to watch.

8 You remember all the kids in grade school and high school

standing in the courtyard first thing every school day and reciting the pledge of allegiance as the U. S. flag was raised.

9 You remember when taking the bus to Alvin to attend the

movies was big time entertainment.

10 You remember when the Pearland School District

had only two school buses. The “big bus” picked up all of the kids in the district who lived west of Highway 35, and the “little bus” picked up all of the kids who lived east of 35.

If you can remember any of those ten things, you definitely are an “old time Pearlander.” And, if in fact you do remember any, you have definitely lived in Pearland since before 1992.

Old Time Pearlander?

I n our Pearland Historical Society Newsletter, we often refer to one of our members as an “old time Pearlander,” and we are often asked the question, “How do you know if you are an old

time Pearlander?” There really are no standards as to what quali-fies one to be an “old time Pearlander.”

Recently, I was at Jiffy Lube wait-ing for an oil change in my car. As I was reading a magazine, my ears perked up a bit as I overheard two ladies talking about all of the growth they had seen in Pearland in the last few years. Mostly their discussion was about the growth in the Silverlake area. Finally, one of the ladies asked the other, “How long have you lived in Pearland?” Her reply was “Since 1992.” The other lady responded say-ing, “My goodness you really are an old timer here.” So, I suppose it is all relative, but as someone who has been here since 1940, I found it a bit amus-ing. Then, I got to thinking about Jeff Foxworthy’s list of “You know you are a redneck if….” So, I have come up a few “You know you are an old timer Pearlander if…”
