History Spot: “Christian “Hooligans””

by: David White

In January 1877 a Rockville newspaper carried an article likely

suggested by a disgruntled adult Methodist Church member. It noted

that ―unprincipled youths of both sexes,‖ were creating disturbances during solemn

worship times to the discomfort of others in the pews. These disturbances were

enough to lead the church to announce that ―those disturbing their meetings will be

forcibly expelled from the room, and their names published.‖ This article urged other

Rockville churches to take similar actions.

The Holiday Gift Fund had another successful year. We were able to assist 4 single mother families. There were a total of 11 people; 4 adults and 7 children, 5 of which were under 3 years old. All the gifts were dropped off at the local WIC office on Monday, December 19th

for distribution. We would like to thank everyone who either pur-chased gifts or made monetary donations to the cause. Gratefully,

The UMW met on December 13th to approve our 2012 Budget. Our finances are in good shape this year due to a lot of hard work on our fund raising efforts. The Holiday Bazaar brought in $4,526, and the Harvest Supper made $1,688. Special thanks to Candy Sun-

derland and her crew for their effort in spite of the Snow Storm which postponed it for a week. The Budget was approved with donations to our church budget, 9 local concerns, 8 Mission programs and Scholarships. The next meeting is not scheduled. We might

change the meeting date from the third Tuesday of the month to the second Tuesday. 13 Lunch Bunch people joined us at the Somers Inn for a beautiful lunch. 3 new people

joined us this year. We probably will meet February or March to plan our events for 2012,

we will need a lot of input at that meeting.

One of my favorite scriptures comes from an Old Testament prophet we know as Isaiah. Isaiah was an

interesting man. He lived in the 8th century B.C.E., Chapters 1-39 are attributed to him and carry a dire

message of gloom and doom. But the tone of the writing changes considerably in Chapter 40. This

chapter and those that follow describe God’s glory and salvation leading modern day academics to sus-

pect there was another (perhaps several) additional writer/s assigned the familiar name of Isaiah. Isaiah

40:21-31 is a hopeful and faith-filled scripture reminding the embattled and exiled nation of Israel that

God is ever with them.

This is a message we need to hear today. Not only do we live in a time of exile, our faith called

into question in so many ways, our economic, political, sociological and ecological world under attack

from forces that seem well beyond our efforts to cope with the changes these and others stressors im-

pose on our lives but, our very faith in God is threatened by those who claim no faith at all. There is a

saying, also in the Old Testament, that says that is nothing new under the sun. That seems to ring true

here. The faith we live and from which we derive our purpose and hope has always been under some

form of attack. After all, Isaiah and others who shared his name wrote and spoke during times of duress.

The circumstances of their lives and the lives of those to whom they prophesized informed the faith not

only of their hearers, but also informed and nurtured the faith of the very ones who were charged with

proclaiming God’s message of hope.

A new year is upon us and with each New Year, hope springs eternal. We do hope that 2012 will

prove to be a better year for our world and for our lives than the year just past. Our optimism may be

realized or it may not, but as Isaiah reminds us, God is our hope and our salvation. When nothing else

seems to go the way we might plan, there is one hope upon which we can rest.

Have you not known? Have you not heard?

The Lord is the everlasting God, Creator of the ends of the earth.

He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.

He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless.

…Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,

They shall mount up with wings like eagles,

They shall run and not be weary,

They shall walk and not faint.

Have a blessed New Year,

Pastor Ricki

RUMC SUNDAY SCHOOL Happy New Year!! 2011 is officially in the books and here we are, ready to

grab 2012 by the horns and make it the best year possible!

This year’s Christmas pageant, titled “Christmas Spirit? Let’s hear it!” was a

great success! If you missed it, it was about how we ALL have the Christmas

spirit within us. Many thanks go out to Althea Madigan and everyone else who

helped out with that event. All the hard work that everyone put in is very much

appreciated!! The kids did great in their roles and the support of the staff and

congregation was amazing!

The kids are doing great in their opening session with Emily in the Sanctuary.

They have been singing songs and have been learning the books of the Bible. They have

gone through the New Testament, and will start the Old Testament in January. The kids

have been singing and shouting in unison their way through the books, and we’ve discov-

ered they have favorites such as Corinthians and Philippians!

Looking forward, Sunday School will resume on January 8th (there is no Sunday School on

January 1st) with a teacher’s meeting at 9:00am. There will also be a Christian Education

meeting on Wednesday, January 18th at 7pm in Fellowship Hall. All are welcome to attend.

Also this month we will have our Winter Mission Project. The details are still be-

ing ironed out, but we are looking forward to a guest speaker coming in to ex-

plain our project, which will benefit other children! Many thanks to Michelle

Gerow in helping to organize this project!! The tentative date is Sunday, Janu-

ary 22nd. Please keep an eye out for details in the weekly bulletin and on the

Sunday school bulletin board.

Looking ahead, we have one of our favorite activities; February 19th is

PRETZEL SUNDAY!!

Finally, We’d like to once again thank the congregation for the continued support of our

church’s Sunday school program, it is greatly appreciated!

Warm wishes for a happy, healthy and safe new year from the RUMC Sunday school staff!

JESUS LOVES ME (Senior version)

Jesus loves me, this I know,

Though my hair is white as snow.

Though my sight is growing dim,

Still He bids me trust in Him.

CHORUS

Yes, Jesus loves me!

Yes, Jesus loves me.

Yes, Jesus loves me!

The Bible tells me so.

Though my steps are oh, so slow,

With my hand in His I’ll go

On through life, let come what may,

He’ll be there to lead the way.

(CHORUS)

Though I am no longer young,

I have much which He’s begun.

Let me serve Christ with a smile,

Go with others the extra mile.

(CHORUS)

When the nights are dark and long,

In my heart He puts a song.

Telling me in words so clear,

“Have no fear, for I am near.”

(CHORUS)

When my work on earth is done,

And life’s victories have been won.

He will take me home above,

Then I’ll understand His love.

(CHORUS)

I love Jesus , does He know?

Have I ever told Him so?

Jesus loves to hear me say,

That I love Him every day.
