DESCRIPTION
Robertson School's newsletter for January 2010TRANSCRIPT
Reflecting on the year that has passed, what a year it was! The construction was mostly completed at the start of
the school year and we celebrated the completion of
the project with the plaque unveiling and ribbon
cutting on December 10th . Thanks to all of you who
worked so hard to make it such a special evening.
What a wonderful celebration of community.
The crosswalk at Mountain and Robertson became a
reality in December and parents can be proud of their
efforts to make this intersection safer for all who
cross. Students did very well for the first term of
school and our Winter concerts were able to take
place in our spacious new gym. What a gift to us all.
The grade 4 toy drive was the most successful one to
date...thanks to everyone who brought in toys for the
Christmas Cheer Board. Staff collected hamper items
for three needy families. What an amazing group of
people – Robertson School staff, students and
parents!! “Light is the task where many share the toil”.

Our Community Conference will take place on January
21st . This year it will be held at Robertson School.
The topic will be on Face book Safety. The
presentation will deal with the latest information on
what is happening on the internet in terms of children‟s
interests and issues connected to face book.
Personal safety while on the internet will be the
focus. What a great opportunity for parents to feel
empowered with the most up to date knowledge of
internet safety. For the entertainment of children
attending, there will be an excellent dog training show.
Thank you to Canada‟s Canine Academy for the
children‟s presentation.
On January 15th, teachers will be participating in a
Math in-service. There will be no classes on Friday,
Jan. 15th .
For two weeks, January 25 – February 5, Evans Coffie
from the Manitoba Arts Council, will be working in our
school. He will work with students exploring African
culture through music and dance. Each room will work
with him and at the end of the week, they will present
what they have learned. We are really looking forward
to this interesting and musical learning experience.
As we begin the new year, may the year ahead bring
you and your families much health and happiness.

I hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas holiday and a happy New Year celebration. The patrols from squad 2 will be on post
the first day back, but they will switch with squad 3 at the 2:00 recess. I would like to remind the patrols that January is one
of the coldest months of the year and therefore it is important that they dress in warm clothing.
Patrols enjoy hot chocolate on very cold days, courtesy of Ms. Coston. The patrols really appreciate her soothing warm
chocolate on those very cold days.
We plan to train our grade 4 patrols in March or April of this new year.
The captains are doing an excellent job for providing leadership for our three squads.

OPERATION FROSTBITE (if –40 with wind chill) Lunch time procedure
Due to the extreme temperature and wind chill, the safety of all our students is important. On days where the temperature with wind chill is –40 or below, we
would like to have all students who are going home for lunch to get dressed at 11:45 a.m. Once they are dressed, they will proceed to the school door that
is closest to their house. There will be two patrols at every door to ensure the students remain inside. When the school bell rings, all students and patrols will
walk as a group together.
Please inform your children of this OPERATION FROSTBITE plan and ask them to stay behind the patrols when walking home, walk quickly and go straight
home. Please also advise them that when they return from lunch, there may not be any patrols on post because it is too cold for them to stand out there for that
long. Staff will be stationed at posts near the school.
If the temperature does not let up by the end of the day, this plan will also be in effect at 3:15 p.m. We will make an announcement over the PA in the afternoon
to let you know if we are proceeding with OPERATION FROSTBITE!
NOTE: If the temperature with wind chill is –40 or colder, patrols will not be on duty. Staff members will be on duty at Machray, Robertson and Cathedral.

Jungle Gym (Gr. 1-3)
Jungle gym began in December for students in rooms 150 and P1. In January, an information sheet with a
permission slip and schedule will be sent home with students in rooms 149, 151, 152, 153 and P2. If you would like
your daughter/son to take part in this activity, please refer to the important information on the sheet and
forward the permission slip before the student‟s first day of activity.
Interschool Volleyball (Gr. 5 & 6)
The north west district of our school division offers a volleyball tournament for Grade 5 and 6 students. Early in
January, students in these grades will be surveyed regarding their interest in being involved in this activity.
Students who say they would like to participate in the tournament will be asked to attend several practices in
preparation for a half day tournament . More details with dates and locations will follow at a later date.

January News from Mrs. Le Grand
Thank you to all choir members who performed at the official opening of our new
addition. It was an exciting evening and you sang with great enthusiasm.
Thank you also to all the students and staff for helping our school “Celebrate”
on December 16 and 17. We hope that you enjoyed the concerts and had a very happy
holiday. The Robertson Singers also filled St. Joseph‟s with beautiful seasonal music.
Thank you singers for representing Robertson in such a positive light. I know the seniors
really enjoyed your concert.
January will bring new sounds and themes to the music room. The Grade 4 students
will be starting recorder which will create a few interesting notes floating down the halls.
All students should have purchased or found their recorder and be ready to play the first
week back in January. The Grade 5 and 6 students will start looking at instruments and
instrumental music with the grade 5 students looking forward to hearing the Winnipeg
Symphony Orchestra in February. Grade 1-3 students will continue learning new songs,
games and music theory.
The Grade 4-6 Choir have held auditions and will be starting rehearsals for the
production of Oliver. We are looking forward to performing for you on April 15, 2010
at 6:30 pm. It will be a wonderful show! The Robertson Singers will be rehearsing for a
performance in the Winnipeg Music Festival in March. There is so much to learn and so
little time!

ROBERTSON SCHOOL PARENT COUNCIL „WORKING TOGETHER FOR THE CHILDREN”
550 Robertson Street 589-4745
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I would like to start by thanking everyone who has participated in our fundraisers so far
this year. We usually have most of our fundraisers before Christmas and I know that it can be
tough when some of us have children at different schools, going to daycare and playing sports.
We appreciate anytime you can help us out by participating in one of our fundraisers. We were
able to raise close to $2,000.00 with our Dieleman (catalogue) fundraiser.
I hope everyone had an opportunity to come out and enjoy the Winter Concert. All of
our students should be very proud of themselves on a job well done. What a great effort the
staff and Mrs. Le Grand put into organizing this wonderful event. Instead of running a silent
auction during our Winter Concert this year, we decided to do a 50/50 draw. The proceeds
from the two evenings were donated to the Christmas Cheer Board. It was nice to try
something new and it was very successful.
It‟s great to see the crosswalk up on the corner of Mountain and Robertson. It‟s nice to
know that our students, present, past and future, and our community members have a safe
place to cross such a busy street.
I would like to thank Cindy Griffin for all the hard work for our Hot Lunch days. It‟s a
huge undertaking and she‟s doing a great job. I would also like to thank all the volunteers who
have helped out this year with hot lunches. It has made an enormous difference and is
appreciated by all of us on Parent Council.
Our next parent council meeting will be Wednesday, January 13th at 6:30 p.m. in the
Library.
Sincerely,
Bonnie Janzen
