Have you heard the old joke?A man asks a business owner: Howmany salespeople work here? About

hal o them the owner replies. TheNorth Bay is predominately made upo small businesses whose ownershave a dierent reply. When I meetwith owners to help them optimizetheir sales operations, I ask, Howmany salespeople work here? Theyrequently respond with, Uh oneor two or maybe three or you could

say our it depends. Steve is our salesman but he also doesdeliveries. Christina handles existing accounts and manages thebooks. Tim helps with sales in a pinch but his main job is buildingproduct and I still have a handul o accounts rom the early daysthat I have not handed o.

This situation is understandable in an early-stage company.Spreading multiple duties across limited human resources is anecessity when the business is starting out. Wearing multiple hatseven helps build the tight-knit, one-or-all atmosphere that is astrength o a small company. The problem is that the companysgrowth will be limited i it continues to operate the SalesDepartment in a Jack-o-All-Trades, Master-o-None mode.It just does not scale well.

I an owner wants his compan to grow, salespeople shouldbe dedicated to selling. There are three benefts to this approach:1. The ull-time salesperson will be more efcient because theyavoid interruptions rom unrelated activities. The increased ocusleads to greater insight and confdence.2. It is easier to establish clear goals and accountability whensales is a persons only responsibility. Measurement is critical toeective sales management.

    creating a strong local economy

    SpeCialize tO OptiMize

How Focs ros C ics Ssby Kurt Shaver, Founder, The Sales Foundry

    3. It is more cost eective to invest in proessional sales trainingor a smaller number o dedicated salespeople. A properly trainedsales team is better equipped to outsell the competition and close

business aster, thus resulting in a higher return on investment. In the company example above, Steve should handle all

sales. With the right sales training, management, and incentives,he will quickly be outselling the group o part-timer sellers. Thisadditional business will create more work or the others in theirprimarily duties. As an additional beneft, they will all improverom specialization ocus, too. Even the owner will win because hewill have more time to ocus on the strategic issues that determinehis companys uture. I having a dedicated sales person does notft your business, then at least give everyone involved in sellingthe beneft o proper sales training. That way everyone shares acommon language and understanding o the process.

Sales specialization also benefts larger companies thatalready have a dedicated sales team. One mid-sized company I

worked with or our years reorganized the sales team into greaterspecialization every year. In that time, the annual year-to-yearsales increase was over 32% each year.

So, consider reorganizing your sales team according to areaso specialty. It will lead to increased sales. I you dont have adedicated sales person or team, be sure to give all o your stathe sales skills and tools they need to be efcient and successul. Then when someone asks you, How many salespeople workhere? you can reply, Every one o them!

Kurt Shaver is ounder o The Sales Foundry, a sales training andconsulting frm in Santa Rosa, CA. The Sales Foundry helps salespeopleachieve break-through perormance throughinnovative training, coaching, and systems.
