Welcome to the Jamborette!Welkom bezoekers, op de Haarlem Jamborette! Alweer voor de elfde keer zijn scouts van over de hele wereld

afgereisd naar ons land om hier samen te kamperen, sporten, koken, dansen, pionieren en vooral veel lol te hebben. Een korte geschiedenis van dit kamp...

Begin jaren ‘70 ging een groep scouts uit regio Haarlem naar een internationaal scoutingkamp in Teesside, Engeland. “Dat was met ongeveer vier groepen, inclusief leiding”, vertelt Piet Honderdos, één van de initiatiefnemers. “Tijdens het kamp hadden we met z’n allen zoiets van: maar dat kunnen wij toch ook?” Uiteindelijk hebben de scouts samen een spandoek gemaakt met de tekst ‘Tot ziens op de Haarlem Jamborette in 1972’. Belofte maakt schuld, dus in 1972 werd de eerste Jamborette georganiseerd op ‘Het Naaldenveld’ in Bentveld met 400 deelnemers.

One of the largest camps in the NetherlandsOmdat de Jamborette iedereen erg goed was bevallen, werd besloten om deze vier jaar later, in 1976, nogmaals te organiseren. Vanaf 1983 is het kamp op het huidige terrein in recreatiegebied Spaarnwoude. Doordat scouts die als deelnemer erbij waren later terugkwamen als leiding of medewerker, bleef de Jamborette groeien. Nu is het een van de grootste scoutingevenementen van Nederland.

Great facilities‘Gothfather’ Piet terug kijkt terug op 39 jaar Jamborette. Hem valt vooral op dat de voorzieningen een stuk beter zijn geworden.

“Vroeger hadden we één koude douche en deden we onze behoefte op een emmer.” Verder is het activiteitenaanbod ook flink anders: “In 1972 bestond het woord disco nog niet eens, laat staan een disco op het kampterrein.” Verder merkt Piet op dat ook het deelnemersaantal een stuk hoger ligt. Wel blijft 2.500 het maximum zodat we de organisatie met alleen vrijwilligers kunnen bemannen.

came to the Netherlands to camp, sport, dance, pioneer and to have a whole lot of fun together. A short history of the camp…

In the early 70’s a group from the Haarlem region went to an international scouting camp at Teesside, England. “We went there with about four groups, including their leaders”, tells Piet Honde rdos, one of the organisers. “At this camp we thought: hey, can’t we organize a camp like this too?” With a few scouts we made a banner containing the text ‘We will see you all at the Haarlem Jamborette in 1972’. A promise is a promise, so in 1972 the first Haarlem Jamborette took place. It was held at ‘The Naaldenveld’ in Bentveld and there were about 400 participants.

One of the largest camps in the Netherlands Because everybody enjoyed the Jamborette very much, it was decided to organize it again in 1976. Since 1983 the camp has been held at the current recreational area in Spaarnwoude. Because a lot of the participants kept coming as scout leaders

or camp staff members when they got older, the Jamborette kept on growing. Now it is one of the largest scouting events in the Netherlands.

Great facilities‘Godfather’ Piet reflects on 39 years of Jamborette. He mentions that the facilities are much better nowadays. “In the old days we only

had one cold shower and our toilet was a bucket.” The activities have become very different as well: “In 1972 we never heard of the word disco, let alone at a campsite.” Besides that, Piet also tells that the number of participants is much higher: ‘’But we will keep it at a maximum of 2.500 participants so that we can continue having only volunteers on the staff.”

1 Climbing tower, Zipline and Pillow fightOp de klimtoren kun je proberen zo hoog mogelijk te komen. Vanaf de kabelbaan ruis je over het water. Bij de Pillow fight kun je het opnemen tegen andere deelnemers. At the Climbing tower you can try to get as high as possible. At the Zipline you rush over the water. At the Pillow fight you combat with other participants.

2 ScubaKijk hoe ze in de duiktank aan het duiken zijn en onderwater frisbeeën. Watch how they are diving and playing under water Frisbee in the diving tank.

2 CanoeingBekijk de Haarlem Jamborette op een andere manier en kano rond het terrein. Look at the Haarlem Jamborette from a different perspective and canoe around our beautiful campsite.

3 ElectronicsBij Electronics kun je zenden, maar ook een radiografische

auto besturen, kennismaken met een infrarood camera of geocachen.At Electronics you can transmit by radio, drive a radio controlled car, learn about infrared photography and enjoy geocaching.

4 Pimp your furnitureDe kinderen hebben de afgelopen dagen verschillende meubelstukken gepimpt. Vandaag kun je die meubels kopen tijdens de veiling. De opbrengst gaat naar ons partnership in Kenia. De veiling start om 15:00 uur. The last few days the kids have pimped several furniture pieces. Today you can bid for them during the auction. The proceeds will go to our partnership in Kenya. The auction starts at 03.00 pm.

Games LoungeRust even lekker uit en speel een spelletje in de Games Lounge. Have a rest and play a board game in the Games Lounge.

5 Arts & CraftsBij Arts & Crafts zijn de deelnemers de hele week creatief

geweest. Kom kijken wat ze zoal hebben gemaakt. Swop is open voor iedereen en er is een kleine tentoonstelling. At Arts & Crafts the participants have been creative all week. Come and check out what they have made. Swop is open for everyone and there is a small exhibition.

6 Djembe-workshop Djembe is echt niet zomaar wat trommelen. Om 14:15 uur, 15:00 uur en 15:45 is er een workshop van vijftien minuten.Djembe is definitely not just simple drumming. At 02.15, 03:00 and 03:45 pm there is a fifteen minute workshop.

7 Human ShuffleboardOp de Jambo Boulevard staat een enorme sjoelbak. Je kunt daar Human Shuffleboard spelen. Dus zwempak aan en rennen maar!On Jambo Boulevard you can find our Human Shuffle Board. So put on your swimming-gear and join us!

The smallest group has the biggest laughsSommige scoutinggroepen hebben veel kinderen en veel leiding. Andere groepen hebben veel kinderen en weinig leiding en anderen weer

omgekeerd. Tot slot zijn er nog groepen met weinig kinderen en weinig leiding. Eén van deze groepen is de Order of Malta uit Duitsland. De leider legt uit: “Net als in Nederland hebben we in Duitsland verschillende vakantieregio’s. Wij zitten helaas in een district waar de scholen alweer begonnen zijn, dus een groot deel kon niet mee. Ook is de meeste leiding weer aan het werk en moest verstek laten gaan.“ Ze zijn met zijn tweeën op kamp. “Maar de kleinste groep heeft de meeste lol”, lacht de leider.

Some groups have a lot of scouts and also a lot of leaders. Other groups have a lot of children and a few leaders or the other way around. At

last there are groups with a few children and a few leaders. One of those is the Order of Malta from Germany. The group leader explains: “In Germany there are regions – like yours – in which the school term has already started. That is why most of our scouts could not join us at the Jamborette. Also the leaders have their jobs to attend to and could not come either.” So it is just the two of them; one leader, one scout. “But the smallest group has the biggest laughs”, smiles the leader.

Unlimited solar energy in Egypt

Bij Astwood Bank in subkamp Egyptenaren hebben ze het thema van de Jamborette: Energy Unlimited op een praktische manier opgepakt. De verlichting in de tent

wordt gevoed met zonne-energie. “Het is een beetje uit nood geboren,” legt Jonathan Pain uit. “Gaslampen meenemen kon niet in het vliegtuig, dus zochten we een andere oplossing. Het zonnepaneel hebben we geleend, maar het bevalt zo goed dat we er misschien zelf wel een gaan kopen. We kunnen er ook onze telefoons mee opladen,” vertelt hij. “Het is ideaal!”

Astwood Bank scouts in the Egyptian sub camp picked up on

the Jamborette theme Energy Unlimited in a very practical way. The lights in the tent are fed using solar energy. “It emerged out of necessity”, Jonathan Paine explains. “We couldn’t bring our gaslights on the plane, so we looked for another solution. The solar panel was borrowed but it worked so well we might buy one for ourselves. We can also charge our phones with it”, he tells. “It’s ideal!”

Manneken Pis and Union Jack

In het subkamp van de Romeinen staat een bijzondere groep. De 1st Brussels (British) Scouts. Bij de poort staat een Manneken Pis. Je vraagt

je af of het nou een Belgische of Britse groep is. De groep bestaat uit Engelse scouts die nu (tijdelijk) in België wonen. De scouts zitten op internationale scholen en krijgen dus ook Engelse les in plaats van Vlaams of Waals. De voertaal in de groep is Engels. Maar in de Engelse zinnen hoor je regelmatig ‘Allee’ en ‘Voila’.

At the Roman sub camp there is a special group. The 1st Brussels (British) Scouts. At the entrance

there is a ‘Manneken Pis’. You wonder if they are a British or Belgian group. The group includes British Scouts who are (temporarily) living in Belgium. The scouts attend international schools and get their lessons in English instead of Flemish or Walloon. But through the English sentences you hear a lot of ‘Allee’ and ‘Voila’.

Hanging in thereDe Wild Wolf Explorer Scout Unit heeft een touw

opgehangen in een boom waar ze trucs aan doen. ‘Corde Lisse’, zoals dat in het Frans heet. Allemaal verschillende manieren om in het touw te hangen. Op z’n kop, overdwars en langzaam naar beneden rollen. Net als in het circus. Ze hangen er niet alleen zelf in. Ook Calum van 8th Holborn Scouts bijvoorbeeld, hij kan al heel veel trucs. “Toen ik hier kwam kon ik nog niets, maar de Wild Wolf hebben me veel kunstjes geleerd”, zegt Calum.

The Wild Wolf Explorer Scout Unit attached a rope to a

tree. They do tricks on the rope, it is called ‘Corde Lisse’, in French. All sorts of tricks can be done on the rope. Upside down, horizontal and slowly rolling down the rope. Just like in the circus. They are not the only ones who hang on the rope. For instance Calum from the 8th Holborn Scouts. He can do a lot of tricks. “When I first came here I couldn’t do any at all. I have learned all the tricks from the Wild Wolf”, says Calum.
