The meaning of Christmas wraps us

in its own packaging: no marked down prices here,

the créche set forth, centered, to view the promised gift

from God.

Thanksgiving just past, and now that people are done with the leftover

turkey and stuffing, we are all set to move into Advent in church and the

Christmas season in the culture. Yet I don’t want to pass over the

importance of Thanksgiving. Aside from the food and family gatherings,

many families have some kind of tradition on Thanksgiving where they

share things they are thankful for as a family. Most of us certainly have a lot to be thankful for.

This year I am thankful for a great number of things. I am thankful for my wife, my children, my

church family, the advent of a “new season” within our congregation, and for all the places where

I can see God working in my life. I could go on about any number of other things, and I am sure

many of you have equally long lists.

What is remarkable about Thanksgiving is that it is a uniquely Christian holiday, yet unlike

Christmas, it faces none of the “attacks” of political correctness. Sure, some people call it Turkey

Day because of their love for the Thanksgiving meal. But the holiday itself has remained

unchanged and unchallenged by our secular culture. The holiday is about giving thanks; but to

whom? It isn’t about giving thanks to our friends, family, or the nation’s founders. It is about

giving thanks to God. From the first Thanksgiving, the holiday has always been about giving

thanks to God for his incredible provision for his people.

Even while Thanksgiving has historically been an American holiday, there is nothing so

distinctive about it that Christians the world over couldn’t celebrate it. Sure, the holiday is tied to

our American heritage, but that is a heritage of trusting and understanding that all blessings come

from God. Thanksgiving Day is like a living doxology- a whole day of “Praise God from whom

all blessings flow.”

I do find myself wondering why and how an atheist could celebrate a day that is so inherently tied

to a belief not just in a higher power, but in an active and loving God who provides for his people.

Moving on from the holiday of Thanksgiving, I would like us to consider what it would be like to

live lives of thanksgiving? Consider Easter; here we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. Yet the one

day of celebration and remembrance is also tied to the fact that we are people of the resurrection.

The resurrection is real and is the defining event of our faith year-round. Doesn’t it make sense

that Thanksgiving Day should be a yearly time to refocus our attention on the need to be people of

thanksgiving daily?

What would it look like to be people of thanksgiving? It might look like giving thanks in

everything, even in our trials and suffering. It is easy to start each day not looking forward to what

awaits, or to finish our day asking, “Why me?” As people of thanksgiving, we night start our day

in thanksgiving for all that God would put in our path each day- the good and the not so good-

knowing that he is a loving Father who uses all things for the fulfillment of his good plans. We

might end our day with joyful prayers of thanksgiving, saying, “Thank you, Father, for each of

these moments you provided me; even the challenging ones, as they help to lean more fully on

your power than on my own.” This would also lead to the time in between the start and end of

our days being times of joy as we anxiously and eagerly seek out what God is going to do next in

our day and how we might use it to glorify him.

In Paul’s letter to the Philippians he spoke about living with abundant joy and thanksgiving even

considering his own imprisonment. In Peter’s first epistle he wrote about being people who face

adversity, suffering, and even persecution with joy, thanksgiving, and trust. We might see

thanksgiving as the antithesis of living a difficult life, or a life filled with suffering. Yet

thanksgiving is the vaccination we receive in advance that then allows joy even during those hard

things. Suddenly, the difficult circumstances don’t become the defining factor of life, but God’s

goodness does, and we can live with joy even with the difficult times because we have defined

our life by joy in God’s unwavering provision instead of in the ever-changing circumstances of

day to day life.

With all of this in mind, don’t let Thanksgiving Day be just another holiday comprised only of

external trappings. Instead, let it be the day that focuses you on giving thanks to God daily, all

year long.

WHAT IS CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY? The word that we know as Church comes from the Greek word Ecclesia, which means “assembly”. This brings to mind the encouraging words in Hebrews 10:24, 25 which says “ And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another--- and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

There’s a lot we could unpack out of there, but I want to focus on the part that says “ not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing”, and “ spur one another on towards love and good deeds.” I have been part of myriad small groups in my life, some that have been more fruitful and more meaningful than others, but it’s having the presence of that community in your life to hold you accountable, to help you with any spiritual issues you may have, and just a group to hold you up when life is messy, and celebrate with you when life is good.

I cannot stress the importance of community enough. As a body, we all have different personalities, different gifts, different skills, but still we are all one. One of us cannot function without the other, we are a family, we are a gathering, we are a community. We reach out when one of us is suffering, we rejoice when one of us is blessed in their life in any way, we walk side by side through the tough times. Can you imagine what life would be like if we didn’t have that? I know I can’t.

But it’s not just for the emotional aspect that we have community, it’s for the spiritual life as well. We are to help one another spiritually grow, to cultivate the gifts God has given us, and all for His glory, and honor, and for His use to build His kingdom. We are to “spur one another on towards love and good deeds” as the writer to the Hebrews says. We are to bolster each other’s faith. We are to help each other become more Christ like, more and more conformed to the image of our heavenly Father. We are to pray for one another, serve one another, encourage one another, challenge and teach one another when necessary, to hold each other up when things get rough. To serve, and to bless, are two of the biggest purposes that Christian community can serve.

Can any group do this? Sure. But the church has been doing it for thousands of years, and because of that, in all parts of the world, the gospel is spreading like wildfire. How incredible is that? To know that though at times we may feel small, like what we’re doing isn’t making any difference, that we’re just going through this thing called day to day life, and through it all God is using us to build His kingdom, and reach more people for Him?

We are all in this together, we are all here for each other. And I think the events we’ve been through in the past year or so has demonstrated that. As long as Gods army rises up, and takes a stand for the gospel and upholds and affirms each other, there is nothing that can get us down. We are stronger, we are closer, and most importantly we are all Gods, and I am so excited to see what He does in and through us in the months and years to come.

God bless you all!

Erika Jo Dielman

FROM THE CORNER OF THE SACRISTY – When walking into the sanctuary Sunday, we noticed something different when gazing at the altar.......the color of the superfrontal has been changed to purple for the season of Advent.

The Advent Wreath has been strategically placed and decked with winter greenery, and the first purple candle has been lit. The Stansbury's read the scripture, lit the candle, and offered a prayer.

This will continue each week, until on Christmas Eve we light the Christ Candle to celebrate Jesus' Birthday.

As we go through advent we reflect, get in the word, and prepare ourselves for His second coming. As Wally stated in his sermon Sunday; "But none of us know the day, or the hour, when this life for each of us will end, or when Jesus will return. So salvation is both near and far; near because we never know when our own days will come to and end; far in that at some time, only the Father knows, Jesus will return, and bring forth the end of time and final salvation ." The time is drawing near and we still have much work to do. Long ago a tiny baby boy was sent into our Father's world to change each and every life He created. To accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, who did not leave us alone but filled us with the Holy Spirit.

What a wonderful beginning and what a powerful ending His story will have. I say, "Come Jesus come."

May we be His light this Christmas season, Karen Dielman
